Songwriter Elliott Smith dead at 34
From correspondents in Los Angeles
October 23, 2003

ELLIOTT Smith, a singer-songwriter whose dark, introspective songs won him critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination, has apparently committed suicide, his publicist and coroner's officials said today. He was 34.

Smith's body was found by his live-in girlfriend yesterday, Los Angeles County Coroner Records Supervisor Marsha Grigsby told AP Radio.

He sustained a single stab wound to the chest that appeared to be self-inflicted, she said.

Smith's New York-based publicist, who spoke on condition of anonymity, also confirmed his death.

Smith released five solo albums that received widespread acclaim from rock critics and garnered modest commercial success.

His song "Miss Misery," recorded for the film "Good Will Hunting," was nominated for an Academy Award in 1998.

More like Mr Misery.

It's a shame though as he wrote some beautiful music.

Ahh thats a shame.

I can't say I really know much of this guys music, but enjoyed his cover of the Beatles 'Because' from American Beauty.

Sad day for his fans no doubt.

Sad news, I loved his music.

Figure 8 and XO were soundtracks to a very intense time of my life. Beautiful music, and lyrics.

It claims another (and another, and another...)

That's awfully sad. Elliott Smith wrote some incredibly beautiful songs including one of my all time favourites, Waltz #2. Never expected this at all (how could you?) :(

An excellent songwriter, whose lyrics and music stood out as being genuine and classy in an era when such objectives were put to the way-side by most others. One of the very best artists of his type (and in general), in his time.

It's a shame that a few people on here feel the need to make snide remarks, although, it's doubtful that those same people would have the sense of 'taste' required in order to appreciate Elliott Smith's talents in the first place.

Go look up sarcasm. The guy was a walking time bomb.

Ah.....that's the thing about the internet.......you never know if somebody is being sarcastic or if they're just a dumb ****.

I'm constantly amazed at how often it's the latter.

So excuse my mistake.

And make yourself clearer next time.

Another talented musician bites the dust. Why does it always happen to the talented ones?????:(

Whinge whinge. I don't buy the whole tortured artist angle. Can't deal with it? Don't be a schmaltzy pop star, work as a janitor.

He made Good Will Hunting hard to watch. I'd prefer David Campbell.

I don't "buy" it either, but I don't hold it against him.

A very talented musician dies and all you can say is "he should have been a janitor."

You sound like a lovely person.

Indeed.

Haven't heard much of him, but what I did hear was promising. Unfortunately we won't be able to hear him realise the quality of music he seemed to be heading towards.

So why bother to add anything to this post ?

Elliot Smith was an actual person, not just a name on a CD cover, so either: show some respect, or go away.
