It was a GF, Pitt from Coburg was playing his last game before retirement, there was no send-off rule, Coburg was having trouble shaking off GW, Scarlett as a ruck-rover was killing them, Phil Cleary was Coburg's C-C, and Radojevic also copped it behind play.
Not a bad memory Fred but it was Trevor Price.

As a young teenager one of the highlights of going to watch the footy ( besides Bill Ryan and Doug Wade) was watching our Full Back take one handed marks and sprint up the middle of the ground bouncing the ball and dodging opposition like no other. Read the play well and was as good as any FB in his era and their were some rippers Bob Murray and Peter Steward included. Had a good record as they say against Hudson who was a FF genius. Just as good as his son but obviously not lucky enough to play in a Premiership side. So yes I guess Matt gets the nod. He spent some time at Newtown when I also was there and he was a top bloke. Higgo and Scarlo gone ...we are all getting older.

One of my childhood heroes. I remember fulhim deservedly being picked for State footy in front of Bob Murray at lback, I think it was 1970. Lost form a few years later but reinvented himself as a forward flanker...I think.

Condolences to his family, Matt and his family, his friends and to the GFC.

It might have been 1-2 years later than that - because i went to the game - it was at the MCG - and im almost certain it was against South Australia . Back then in State football - the top teams got 2 representatives and the bottom teams on the ladder - only got the 1 - so he might have been Geelongs sole representative

The one thing i can remember about that game re Scarlett - is Victoria actually had a cheersquad - with streamers and everything - behind the Punt Rd goals - and when the game was just about to commence - Scarlett has made his way to FB - the 10 yard square at that end of the ground - and because i suppose he was the closest Victorian player to the cheersquad - they started singing - John Scarlett - clap clap clap - John Scarlett - clap clap clap

I tell you - Gunner loved that .

Seems cheer squad chants haven’t evolved
