RIP Mick Nolan

As a person who was over 100 kilos by the age of 16 I saw Mick as a bit of a hero figure for the chabby chaps of Australia. He was one of my favourite players at NMFC and a genuine character.
He deserves to be remembered as a NMFC legend.

A true legend, both on and off the field. My favourite story of Mick is that one night we standing upstairs in the old North Social club after a game and there were a few players standing at the the table with us. Mick walked over and put a full tray of pots on the table. Someone said thanks Mick, you didn't need to buy us all a beer. Quick as whip he said 'f**k off they're mine', everyone erupted in laughter. Needless to say he handed them around but still got a good share of them.

Vale Mick, the world is a lesser place without you.

I was lucky enough to see him play. A superbly gifted tap ruckman and a genuine one of a kind who proved that you didn't have to fit all the usual stereotypes in order to be a gun footballer.

They'll be tapping an extra couple of kegs in heaven tonight.

Condolences to family and friends.

A man of the times and gone before his time. Another Star in heaven. Hope Mick , Macca and Lidge are sharing a few frothies with Case in that North Social Club in the sky.

R.I.P. Mick.

Thanks for the memories of those days at Arden Street. I can still picture in my mind where Mick was on the MCG at the final siren of the '75 GF. Good times and good memories.

Me too - or what I could see of him through my tears. :)

Very sad news. A true North hero.

I recall when as a young fellow I first saw Mick play and thought there's no way this big fat guy will ever make it. Almost immediately had to revise my opinion like everyone else who initially doubted.

One of my great memories of Mick was in a semi final at Waverley (possibly '76 against Geelong?), when there was an opposition kick out after a behind. Mick saw that it was going to their man at about North's CHF area, got up a head of steam, spoiled the mark from behind, kept going to gather the crumb and drilled the goal from about 50. A magic moment.

  • COLOURFUL North Melbourne football stalwart Mick Nolan passed away last night after a short battle with cancer.
Nolan, endearingly nicknamed the Galloping Gasometer in the mid-1970s by Lou Richards, will be honoured at a function at the Gabba on Sunday by most of the 19 men with whom he shared North Melbourne's first premiership in 1975.

Ron Joseph, the man who recruited Nolan from Wangaratta Rovers, said last night Nolan, who lumped 124kg into 107 VFL matches, was surrounded by family when he died.
"When Mick got the news last week that it wasn't good for him, he was hoping he'd be able to get home for a period of time for some palliative care, but he never got out of hospital and really went downhill from the weekend," Joseph said. "From the family's point of view, it was a very peaceful passing, and Mick, being the proud bloke he was, would have loved having his family around him."

The tribute to Nolan, who became an influential promoter of Aussie rules in Brisbane, was hastily arranged last weekend after news of his illness.
Organisers are now preparing for an attendance of at least 300 on Sunday.
Nolan was 58.

R.I.P. Mick...a true gentleman. As long as I live, I shall never forget that cold Thursday night at Arden St when, with my autograph book in hand, I timidly approached the great man to ask for his signature. He bent down, looked me in the eye, and replied "Most certainly!" 30 years later, I can still recall the warmth and generosity in those two words which thrilled a young boy to bits.

Thought I'd come in and pay my respects,

I never saw Mick play (a little too young) but my old man says he was a great footballer and servant to North. RIP Mick.

PS. Great win on the weekend!!

My brother is a life long Kangas man and i can remember the joy big Mick brought to him and his mates. Sorry to hear of his passing.
R.I.P. BIG FELLA.

Yes, the 1976 first semi was probably Mick's best game for the club. IIRC that goal made the game safe for North.
One of the most extraordinary ruckmen I've seen. Just wasn't built for footy but didn't know it.
Anyone know if his sons still play for Heidelberg in the Northern League?

R.I.P Mick,

Although i didnt get to him play live, i have watched many videos and he was clearly ahead of his time with his rucking skills.

Condolences to his family and friends and also the NMFC and his former team mates
