These last couple of days have been bad news for some of our past Australian players.
I did a coaching course at the MCG in the late 70's and Peter Philpott instructed us on leg spin. I was quite surprised because even though he was in his 40's he could hit a disk about the size of a frisbee on the pitch most of the time. He went through them all, top spinner, little leggie, middle size leggie, big leggie, giant leggie, small wrong un', big wrong un', flipper, fast flipper, etc. Before every ball he showed us the grip and told us what it would be, and it was. After each ball be explained the important points and then demonstrated them again. He never seemed to tire of being asked questions. I remember being surprised at how fast through the air he was, he bowled at a fairly brisk pace. He was a great communicator and I learnt a hell of a lot about leg spin. So thank you Peter for all your coaching advice and all the wonderful Keith Miller stories. RIP.
