RIP to the Purple One

PRINCE has died suddenly at the age of 57, just days after he was rushed to hospital with the flu.

The singer’s body was discovered at his Paisley Park compound in Chanhassen, Minnesota early Thursday morning, TMZ reports.

Authorities responded to a medical emergency at 9.43am at the estate and a fatality was reported by Carver County Sheriff’s Department but they did not immediately identify the deceased. Prince’s publicist Yvette Noel-Schure subsequently confirmed his death to the Associated Press.

A forensics team and a medical examiner are at the scene.

The pop icon was hospitalised on April 15 after his private jet was forced to make an unscheduled landing in Illinois, just hours after a performance in Atlanta, Georgia. A representative for Prince told TMZ at the time that he had been suffering from a nasty bout of the flu for several weeks. He received treated for three hours before being released and returned home to recuperate.

The award-winning singer, songwriter and actor — born Prince Rogers Nelson — famously changed his stage name to a symbol in 1993.

In his lifetime, the Purple Rain singer won seven Grammy Awards, a Golden Globe and an Academy Award. He sold tens of millions of albums worldwide in a career that spanned several decades and was inducted into the Rock and Roll of Fame in 2004.

Prince made a surprise appearance at a dance party in Minnesota on Saturday, what is now believed to have been his final public appearance.

While he didn’t sing, it is believed he attended to quieten the speculation about his failing health.

“Wait a few days before you waste any prayers,” Prince reportedly told fans at the party near his home.


One week ago, the superstar musician shared an ominous photo on Instagram of a blank white space. Fans flooded his social media page with messages of concern.

Tributes started flooding in almost immediately, with hundreds of fans, including fellow celebrities, expressing their grief following the death of the music icon.
