RIP Robert Walls

I really hope the club continues to honour him all weekend - they took far too long to send out a message yesterday! If I had my choice there would be a minutes applause before Sunday's game - that's how much he meant to me and a lot of Royboys and Bears supporters.
While I'm both Carton and the Lions will honour him this weekend (black armbands), I think being SDNR will still be the emphasis.
Ideally Rd 18 at Docklands for the inaugural Robert Walls cup would be a great way to truly recognise his achievements.

IMO, it would be appropriate for Carlton and us to play annually for the Robert Walls Cup, or at least BOG in our clashes to be awarded the Robert Walls Medal. He has earn't a lasting tribute.

A couple of sliding doors moments I've thought about this week.

What if Wallsy didn't announce his resignation until the end of the 1995 season?

What if he quit the same week he announced his resignation, after Round 15 in 1995 with our 4-11 record?

Do the Bears play finals in 1995?

How might that have affected the Northey and Matthews years?

Was an excellent 1 hour tribute to Wallsy on Fox Footy last night. The original idea for the tribute came from Peter Blucher who also wrote an excellent piece on the Lions website.

For those looking for it on Kayo, it's a special edition of 'On the Couch' (broadcast 19 May 2025).

You would reckon Fox Footy could replay it for those that missed. 360 and First Crack repeats till 5 AM.

Not wanting to blow my own trumpet, but a very fitting tribute, the Robert Walls medal 🏅

I might be in the minority here, but not a fan personally.

My 2c.......

Not because he doesn't deserve recognition (quite the opposite in fact - a legend of the game, and you could make a case that he is the "godfather" of the Lions as we know them), but these medals and "awards" die a slow (or quick) death, and become forgotten (after being set up with the best of intentions).

In AFL we have two teams playing each other for various "cups", and then we have such awards as the "Jason McCartney medal", "Archer-Hird medal" (both not awarded for 12 years), St Kilda's "Anzac Medal", and our own "Sands of Gallipoli" medal, that I don't think even gets awarded now? They simply don't register now. Cricket too - the "David Hookes Memorial Trophy" - who remembers that?

Whilst I 100% get the intent, I just fear that these awards fade into insignificance after a period of time, and I'd hate to see the same thing happen to Wallsy. He deserves better.

Maybe something at the new stadium?

Whilst I am not disagreeing, IMO Wallsy's stature means this medal will be relevant for a long time.
