A very important part of AFL and Sydney history

Him coaching us was part of saving this club, a legend

100% well said The King! was instrumental in getting Sydney back from the brink, in early to mid 90’s. Has helped set up the current last almost 30yrs of sustained finals and wins.

Is a true legend of AFL one of the greatest, for three other teams too, Melbourne, Carlton and North.

RIP Ron Barrasi

I personally never liked him. He was the embodiment of the AFL establishment. He coached us decades ago, but never showed any loyalty or even affection towards us since. He was Melbourne through and through.

And I could never forgive him for actively campaigning against a football world cup in Australia, culminating with that embarrassing photo of him deflating a soccer ball. That was just cringe.

Not saying he deserved to die. I’m sure he was a nice man otherwise.

This club owes him everything. His name alone gave us the breathing room to get everything sorted. We haven't looked back since. That win against Carlton on his 700th match was probably the peak Ron era Swans. Roos and plugger at their best. Or beating Collingwood on the last match day as coach to give Brisbane the final place in the 8.

So glad he got to see us finally win a premiership and then his beloved Dee's. We are just one of the 4 clubs where he changed everything once he arrived. an Australian sports legend

Rest in peace Ron.

Very sad to hear.
Instrumental in stabilising our club & Vic based supporters when at one point it seemed as though they were trying to detach the Sydney Swans from South Melbourne to have a new start & identity.

Thank you Ron as it was when you came along that I again felt we had some hope to hang on as old South Melbourne supporters.

He was absolutely instrumental in saving our club when we were at our lowest of lows.

A legendary figure in this great game

RIP Ron Barassi
That’s for sure. RIP all the best to his family. Legend of our game.

Vale Ron. Sat on the Swans board for 7 years after his coaching stint with us.

Will never forget your contributions to the club Ron, put us on the path for the success we have enjoyed since.

I was 9 and lucky to be at the SCG in 1993 when we beat the Demons to break the losing streak, a moment I’ll never forget.

I was 13 at the time and watched on tv but I still remember it pretty clearly. Was like celebrating a GF win.

Being at the 2012 GF wearing a Swans scarf would be an affection for the club.

How did he save our club? I'm aware we got a few more wins under him and were no longer a laughing stock, but he had a young improving list that was finally about ready to compete. You're all talking like he was some kind of magician who brought us back from the dead all on his own, so I assume I'm missing something?

RDB changed the rules of the game - in 1960's, that allowed the coach to go on the ground at the end of the first quarter to address the players.
17 grand finals, four clubs, 10 premierships

Here is an article to give an idea.

He joined in the early rounds of 1993 when we were a basket case. We hadn’t won a game since round 7 1992 and would lose 26 straight. Not a young improving team that you misrepresent.

It wasn’t about the win loss record but about establishing the right culture and some respect in the club. Which has been the case since he left and Eade/Roos and Longmire have continued on.

He did for us what Paul Roos did for Melbourne.

Stopped the rot, sorted the culture and the backroom and got the team going in the right direction for a younger coach. He was "past it" as a coach when he joined in 1993 but his name alone gave us the time to get things fixed. His name got us extra help from the AFL and got us Lockett and Roos.
