First and foremost rest in peace Ron. Always looked forward to his posts/stats on the main board and his contributions will be sorely missed.
I would be lying if I said I agreed with many of his social views. I am not sure it is appropriate to mention though.

It is sad he is dead, especially since he was not exactly old either.
I think that's what I enjoy about Bigfooty the most tbh. I disagree with plenty that is said but it's helped me listen to different viewpoints that I wouldn't have the patience for IRL.

It is such a fine line as I don't want to kick someone when they are down and being dead is the ultimate down.

It's not kicking someone when they're down - it's acknowledging that you had different views. Which in a liberal democracy is sort of the point. Never met Ron but enjoyed his posts even when I disagreed with them. And as a numbers nerd, loved his attention to detail in providing numbers upon numbers upon numbers.

Glad the Tigers saluted for him late in his life. RIP

You can acknowledge you sparred with him - I did too.

However this is a thread to pay respects. And no matter his social views, he was unquestionably a decent person at heart and a peerless contributor to this forum with his vast archive of stats. Whenever I asked him for an obscure stat or had queries about the stat he just posted, he was always happy to help without fault or needing credit or validation for it. I enjoyed our discussion over the age profile of West Coast teams from 1987 that played at Kardinia Park on a Saturday evening and other such statistical analysis.

He will be missed by most, if not all BigFooty posters. And as you said, it is still sad that he has passed. Most BigFooty posters are anonymous to you and I so sometimes it's easy to forget there is a real person behind every post. The Richmond board has plenty of stories of Ron providing help as a real life person.

RIP

Posted this on the Richmond board but RTB deserves main board recognition too.

RIP Ron. I don’t think I ever skipped reading one of your posts as you mostly had something worth saying. Loved the stats… you certainly answered plenty of my queries.

If there is ever a BigFooty Hall of Fame I reckon Ron The Bear should be an inaugural inductee.

Agree. Never skipped his posts and very frequently would ask him for stats. Never let me down.

Rest in peace Ronnie.

Very sad to hear, a great presence on here and a wealth of knowledge and information.

He will be sadly missed.

Thoughts and best wishes to his family and friends...

Ron’s youngest sister here. He was a real person behind the computer. A great man with many fierce loves. Not all agreed with him but you could always have a robust discussion with him. In real life he was generous, kind, loved his nieces/nephews, hugely intelligent (I’ve never known someone as smart as him).
Thank you to those with the very kind words about my big brother.

Was he always quick with a stat much like someone would be quick with a joke?

Just an irreplaceable being is Ron.

Shattered. Absolutely shattered.

Been liaising with him on here since September 2013.
At a click of a finger, his database would spit out the historical stats I requested. Incredibly helpful.
And always without a fuss, and always above and beyond what I requested. On the occasions his stats went to print on larger sites, he declined any credit in the articles.

One of our last conversations a few months ago we chatted about Jack Titus and his incredible career, and I ended our DM with
"Titus was a machine. And so are you Ron".

A huge loss for the stats community. Thankful we were lucky to have his skill and passion for such a long time.
But if I'm being honest, any future statsmen/women will always be compared against him.

Rhett.
