RIP Shane Tuck

His lawyers have released a video of all Tuck’s head knocks in his career at Richmond, they just look like normal footy incidents, most of the incidents he
jumps straight up and plays on and some he gives his head a quick rub and plays on.

The longest incident they focus on is when Tuck broke his scapula v Port and he went back on multiple times when clearly in heaps of pain.

How they can only focus on Tuck playing for Richmond and nothing from the SANFL, Hawthorn, boxing etc.
is a bit ridiculous.

You mean the lawyers representing Shane's wife.

That's an important distinction.

Well I seriously doubt that the club would make such a statement without support and evidenced scrutiny of our clinical risk processes around concussion management by a third party.

Worksafe appointed concussion management specialists in 2020 and it’s public knowledge that they were conducting reviews of concussion management at an industry and club level. And I’m sure that Worksafe would not just focus on the now and have every right to look back.

The Club has an obligation under Health and Safety legislation to provide a duty of care to employees, contractors and volunteers. It’s one of the highest risks of any AFL Club and the level of controls to mitigate this risk are extensive and mandated as a minimum by legislation. I’m positive that these controls are reviewed extensively, regularly and independently. Directors are liable under this legislation, as are management. When you consider that Club Directors are volunteers, it’s a legislative burden that is taken incredibly seriously as it should. So I doubt, based on that, that the Club would make such a statement without support.

It’s incredibly sad re Tucky. A wonderful Richmond person and servant. The greatest legacy would be to learn and inform ourselves and the industry regarding CTE causes and management. The Tuck Family (Mum and Sister) addressed a Club80 function recently and reinforced that.

Thanks Kiwi - answered on my behalf perfectly....

What I do find disingenuous about how this is all framed that Richmond are seemingly the only ones the family are going after, what about his time at Hawthorn, the SAFL and obviously his boxing career post football
All of the above would of had similar standards of practice as Richmond at the time but only his time at Richmond is under the microscope

It’s great that cte is being taken seriously and a lot more work needs to be done but it needs to be an industry wide and sports wide spotlight not just targeting one part of a very long career

...and here we go again.... Ty went after the club in court earlier this year over a back injury and now he's throwing concussion into the damages claim as well.

FFS - so is he also naming Essendon as well considering they allowed him to play 9 games there in 2005 after turning up there all banged up after his time at the Tigers?
And then post AFL at Kangaroo Flat and Heidelberg in the burbs?

I guess from my experience of working within matters of legal responsibility that an alleged parties insistence of innocence doesn't always mean there was no fault. I'm probably just trying to point out that people's love for the club can blind them to even consider that there may have been fault.

Loved Tucky but I'm sure as a footballer and sporty young kid he would have taken some heavy knocks, I would have been concussed at least half a dozen times before I turned 20. Surely its a compilation of all his lifetime head knocks that have caused CTE, its tragic but you cant just point the finger at one club, even if we're the most cashed up of all his previous teams.

Also played local footy at Strathmore and Torquay.

Interesting the lawyer representing Tuck’s wife is also representing Zantuck, Greg Griffin.

Griffin on behalf of his clients isn’t blaming West Adelaide, Box Hill/ Hawthorn, boxing federations, Essendon, Strathmore, Kangaroo Flat, Heidelberg or Torquay, just Richmond.

I believe appropriate legal strategy would be to join all these parties as co-defendants in proceedings along with the AFL who oversee all AFL competitions and whatever boxing regulatory body oversaw his fights and maybe the promoter (though I presume the latter two would have waivers signed by Tucky) . Tucky's family may rightfully be due something but it's not all on RFC.

That’s a good point would have played in excess of 100 junior games too, what was the toll there ? I’m sure this would be put out there

Don't forget the numerous boxing sessions during training that would've been undertaken.
