There's a feeling among a lot of us Bomber folk our rivalry with Carlton is growing to be the biggest rivalry in the game (for Essendon at least) with what's happened between the two clubs in the last few years.

This is no disrespect to Collingwood or the great 'Anzac' tradition we've created the last few years or the Carlton/Collingwood tradition over the 100 years.
I 'spose most of you 'Pies/Blues fans will disagree, but i'm interested in hearing your opinions.

Note: this is neither a Carlton/Collingwood bashing or we are better than you exercise.
We are very different clubs, but we all share rich and colorful histories.

So, what do you guys think?

where's wally?

The only people who seem to think that Essendon and Carlton are great rivals are Essendon fans. They have given themselves that honour!
Carlton's greatest rival is Collingwood, they always have been and they always will be. We may not like them, but we do respect them!
As for Essendon not only do we not like them, we also have no respect for them.
Just because they equalled Carlton's premiership record they think they are up there with is. They are not! They are the great pretenders.

You shouldn't have started this Wally. It is getting too close to the start of the season, and I feel the former "bitch" tag returning!

What is it about Essendon fans and comparing their club to everyone else? The Norm Smith had barely been draped around James Hird's neck before some Essendon fan started posting here to compare him to Carey. And now they're insisting that the Essendon vs Carlton rivalry is the be all and end all. Hilariously, the Dons have even tried to compare their achievements to Manchester United (note to your president, United have been doing the business in England for about 10 years, the current Dons squad have only been at it for about 2).

I reckon it comes to this. Essendon, despite their success, is a club without a personality. Think up any of the Victorian clubs and you can summarise their personalities in a few words....Carlton -arrogant, Collingwood - one-eyed, Richmond - the tiger roar, St.Kilda - cult following, North Melbourne - innovators, Footscray - battlers, Melbourne - establishment, Geelong - heart-breakers, and Hawthorn - proud. The only thing I can think of when it comes to Essendon is a merchandising theme that rivals McDonalds (hence McEssendon) in its ability to get the kids in. The marketing ability is a very good thing, but it's hardly a personality trait that can be called "club defining".

But think Essendon and you think that they're a very well run club and very successful with a rich history, but essentially souless. They're like that kid who did all his weekend homework by 9.30 on Friday night and is now married with two children, the mortgage almost paid off, and has a stable job in upper-middle management. All very secure, but hardly sexy, admirable but not the stuff of truly engaging gossip. Meanwhile, Collingwood would be the club that is spending their time drinking VBs and smoking their Peter Jacksons whilst comparing notes on tattoos and Harley-Davidsons and beating up the Essendon fan on Monday morning to borrow their homework. So perhaps that's why their fans insist on comparing themselves to others, they hope that by comparing themselves as they have in recent years to the likes of North Melbourne, Carlton, and Collingwood, others may think of the Dons in the same light as North and co.

In years past when Carlton won flags and Collingwood won in 1990, I can't recall the fans of these clubs comparing themselves with other clubs. It was a case of "We're Carlton, we're the champions!", NOT "We're Carlton and we've now got a premiership or two over Essendon so nyah nyah nyah nyah". Even with North, it was our win and a two fingered salute to the rest of you. But the Dons, they need to compare themselves. They seem to be a little bit insecure, don't you think?

Shinboners,

Expect a thesis now from "you-know-who" as to why Essendon is not a soul-less and essential boring enterprise with no character.

McEssendon - I love it!

No doubt in my mind that Collingwood v Carlton is still the big clash in Victorian football, regardless of the lack of competitive matches these two have had in recent years. Just the mention of "Collingwood v Carlton" has a touch of magic about it, something that Essendon v Coll/Carl doesn't.

Well said Shinboners, I agree you are spot on with your analysis. You should get the milkshake boy fired up on this one..

It is obvious that Wally's fairly harmless original post struck a nerve with people or he wouldn't have gotten the response he got.

I think EVERY club has insecure supporters on this board.

Carlton supporters have to go around calling themselves "The Best in the Business". How dare that any non-Carlton supporter dispute that?

Collingwood supporters are always starting threads about who the most "popular" club in Australia is.

Port supporters are always comparing their SANFL achievements to every one else's.

And yes, Essendon supporters do it too. I think the whole Manchester United thing is rubbish.

Thanks stealth-bomber, you're right about all clubs having good supporters and the 'ratbag element' (Not every Essendon supporter is cocky and smug or 'insecure', same as not every Carlton supporter has a superiority complex, and yes, every Magpie supporter is not a half-witted oaf). Judging from some of the bile spewed in some of these replies, a few have clearly demonstrated what category they fit into. Next time i'll know better.

There was a thread running recently asking who our favourite BigFooty poster was. I nominated Roylion, but may now consider changing that to Shinboners! Excellent!

Yet another startling and accurate insight into the culture and mores of our game.

Judging from the replies of Wally and Stealth Bomber, it looks like Bee's case is proven!

Port v Adelaide has to be the biggest by far...not by tradition wise, but by what happened in SA at the time, how the crows were created, and the spite that goes on between fans

Stealth, Carlton supporters do not go around saying we are the best in the business because we are insecure.
It's a fact. It's just pure belief that we are the best in the business. You can call us arrogant or whatever else you like, but you can never call us insecure.
The fact is we simply believe that we are the best in the business. End of story!

Spot on Shinners, top call....... McEssendon.
For mine, and as a supporter of neither club, the biggest rivalry is Carl - Coll. Depending on who wins, it's fantastic to see the arrogance of the Blues fans or the venom in the eyes and the "stick that up yer clacker" from the Pies faithful after a game.
It's the emotion like this from real football people, you and I, which will keep this the peoples games no matter how hard the AFL is trying to cater for corporate sponsors and the "theatre goers".
Rivalries - the greatest one in 5 years will be all of us as football supporters v they who run the show.

So it's a scientifically proven fact that the Carlton FC is the "best in the business". I guess all others should pack it in and quit trying.

Okay, I'll admit it. I'm insecure. I'm just tired of having to defend the club I follow all the time, like it's some sort of societal defect.

We aren't all like Dan24.
