Essendon and Brisbane
Carlton and Collingwood
Port Adelaide and Adelaide
Fremantle and West Coast

There's something that's never sat well with me about these rivalries, I'll see if I can write it up or maybe it'll come out as random gibberish.

The most famous one is Collingwood/Carlton.
Always has been. The old enemies.

Everyone sees them as the main rivalry.
Unless your name is Dan26. ;)

Other rivals...
Essendon vs Carlton
Carlton vs Richmond
Collingwood vs Richmond
Brisbane vs Essendon
Brisbane vs Western Bulldogs
Brisbane vs Kangaroos
Collingwood vs Melbourne

And obviously the 'derby' matches.

Very early on, the biggest rivalry was Collingwood vs Fitzroy. I don't count Brisbane as Fitzroy so I didn't put in the list. (I hate mergers)

Dan, Collingwood/Essendon hasn't traditionally been a rivalry has it?

The biggest rivalries are between Carlton, Collingwood & Essendon. No matter what position either of them have on the ladder, when they are drawn to play each other it is normally a huge crowd.

To a lesser extent, you could throw Richmond into that mix too.

As for interstaters, there is no doubting that the two WA clubs have a distinct dislike for each other so too with the two SA clubs.

Essendon Vs Pies Vs Bloos
in any combination.

I wouldn't say there is really a rivalry b/w dons and lions.
A grudging respect more than anything i would've thought - even though we don't like you.
;)

The biggest rivalry in the AFL is without doubt between Port Adelaide and Adelaide, the players absolutely hate each other, as do many of the fans.

It is a real rivalry not like the money making, supposed, rivalries of the "Big 4".

I agree with the majority, Carlton, Collingwood and Essendon make up the best rivalries and you could possibly throw Richmond in as well, but their the main 3.

Coming from a footy state outside of Victoria you get to appreciate the intense rivalries between a 2 team State like WA or SA. The rivalries don't have the tradition or history as the Vic teams do, but there is a lot of passion.

From the West Coast point of view, Essendon is a big one. Obviously from the Essendon side it's not as big as, say, Carlton, but the jacket thing has made it a special game every time.

Geelong are another one, though that's probably not as intense as it was in the mid-90's when there were 2 GF's still in recent memory.

It's probably no coincidence that Essendon and Geelong are also the teams West Coast has played the most times.

Port and collingwood are starting to develop a rivalry. The last 3 matches have been fantastic, hopefully Port will play collingwood in melbourne next season,as the last 3 matches have been in adelaide and i would live to see Port live

Just because we played close games doesn't make us rivals. Everybody wants to be Collingwood's rival.

i am a collingwood supporter,im just stating facts. At the moment there would be more interest in Pies vs Port than say Pies vs tigers.Rivalries have to start somewhere and there is no love lost between the 2 clubs

I don't consider Port a rival. Port hate us (everybody does) and we have a "Magpie" affinity, but thats it.

Richmond and the Doggies have hardly been the best of buddies since early last season. I know it takes more than 3 games to build a rivalry, but I can see a nice one building and prospering for years to come.

Richmond and Carlton since the days of those Grand finals in the early 70s (especially after Big Nick hit the turf)

Richmond and Essendon still have some bad blood since the Windy Hill riot back in when? 74?

Collingwood and Richmond's mutual dislike led to the futile trade war ofg the 1980s that left Richmond bankrupt and the Pies in dire straits.

Used to be some decent hatred between North and the Hawks back when they were the glamour teams of 25 years ago too.

We don't need you as rivals. I'm happy for you to remain our bitches.

Qantas is your bitch. Try winning away from home occasionally.

Like we did in all of those "last ever game at Victoria Park" matches during our 10-game winning run against you in the 90's?

West Coast v Collingwood: West Coast 17, Collingwood 9, 1 draw. We have a better record against only Fremantle and the Brisbane Bears, so you're in illustrious company.

Back in the good old days when you were a real football team with a quality coach.

You cant win interstate these days though.

So your saying that these four clubs whove been around 100 years is manufactured? Yeah. Good one. We've hated each other for eons.
