AFL should start to ween in a mid-season trade period by doing this..... Clubs are allowed to trade their Mid-Season Draft pick for a straight swap for another teams player, taking on his current contract. So in the case of Mason Cox
, we could trade our #1 MSD pick to Freo for him. They instantly get a free spot on their roster to use the pick or promote a rookie, & we get a ready made player we need to fill a urgent need. Us playing with no ruckman is not good for the quality of the game. The AFL needs to make it easier for clubs to fix mid-season roster issues to stop the game becoming a joke. Essendon had the same issue last year with Rucks.
By opening up that rule, it would also allow for bigger name players to possibly move mid year. IE we could target Marshall to get now, not in the off-season. We could trade our MSD, but also agree to trade a pick in October to "balance out" the deal, paying a lil bit more to get him now when we need him. AFL should allow this as a legal move - why does it matter if both clubs + player want out now?
A way for players to move mid-season is a absolute must moving forward. Doesn't have to be a full trade period & it should always be only done if the player agree's to the move - but there are ways to bring it in through a lesser means to limit the chaos it could create. It just needs to be a system for players who are not getting games and unhappy to move on and not waste an entire season.
How ****ing wild would it be if Essendon traded Merrett now for example? Would be the biggest story of the year - heaps of content, tv media - how does anyone lose from that?
