I know it is a long way away, but here are my 'pre-chrissy' tips for rnd 1 of the 2001 AFL SEASON

Kangaroos V Essendon - M.C.G
An hard game to tip, mainly because i think Essendon peaked last year, and they certainly won't dominate the Comp again. North may be ageing but they still are a top 4 side. But they probably don't have the class which the Bombers oooze all over the ground. Essendon should still won with a few goals to spare - Essendon by 24 pts

Collingwood V Hawthorn - M.C.G
I suspect the Magpies will be more competitive in Y2K1 and should win more games especially at the G. I am not convinced of Hawthorn, think they rely too much on to few (too many passengers) and the Pies should scrap home in a close one.
Collingwood by 8 Points

Western Bulldogs V St.Kilda - Colonial
Hmm an extremely hard game to tip, possibly the match of the round. st.kilda should improve substantially with their 'recruits' and the Dogs seem to be on the slide. With Wynd's retirement the ruck duel won't be as crucial, and i think the Dogs don't have enough talls to hold off the tall St.kIlda foward line.
St.Kilda by 45 Points

Port Adealide V Brisbane Lions - Football Park
Does anyone really care ? Nah, seriously i think the Power can start their 2001 season with a good comftable win over the Lions. I don't think the Lions feel too good about playing Port at their own dung hill and for Mark Williams' sake i hope they can get off to a good start.
Port by 17 points

Fremantle V Carlton - Subiaco
Carlton despite the skeptics are a very very good team, with classy players all over the ground. Lance Whitnall could be better than Carey and i suspect he is ready to take the league apart. Koutofidies is simply the best player in the AFL at the moment, and hopefully will fire up for new coach Wayne Brittain. As long as they don't get too cocky, I suspect a long night ahead for Fremantle.
Carlton by 60 points.

Geelong V West Coast - Shell Stadium
I will never, ever underestimate the mob from Perth as they have proven to be a nemesis for Geelong in the past decade. Sadly i can't see West Coast being World beaters this year, altough i am sure they will be a contender for a lower Final 8 spot. Geelong had a great record at Shell Stadium last year, but this game will not be easy.
Geelong by 24 points

Sydney V Adelaide - S.C.G
In my 'upset' of the round, I think the Crows should be able to handle the Swans in Sydney, mainly because i think Adealide won't be that bad next year, and I think Sydney is grossly overrated. Sure O'Loughlin is a handy player, and Kelly is a good (not great) player, however the Crows do have a well-drilled hardcore captain in Riccuitio and as long as Robram and co can give good support, they should come out victors.
Adelaide by 10 points

Melbourne V Richmond - M.C.G
This is going to be, I suspect the flogging of the round. The Demons were simply sensationial in the last 3 months of season 2000 and the Tigers were dismal and i expect the tradition continues. The Dees are a champion team, rather then a team of champions, and should easily account for a team, which quite frankly needs a through rebuilding of it's list. Kellaway and Richardson are no sure thing to play anyway. This could get ugly for Richmond and I there is no way i Can see Daniher's Demons losing.
A 12 goal mauling is on the cards.
Melbourne by 88 points.

I would like to point out that i have put all personal team/fan bias aside and have come up with hopefully a good and accurate guide to next season's rnd 1.
Feel free to disagree with me on any of my selections, although i have a suspicion the Tigers/Dees game will hit a roar nerve.

G4E Dont Agree With U On The Dees/Tigers Game! 12 goals i think it would be more like 15 goals! Well I hope coz i hate richmonds guts and nothing more then seeing the bandwagoners upset!

Collingwood Vs Hawthorn...
Collingwood will come out and play outstanding and win by 200 points and same with the next 4 rounds. But will lose every other game like last season... most likely and win the wooden spooo again.

G4E, I've got to hand it to you, you've put a lot of thought into this and for most of it pretty sensible except:

a) Kelly IS a great player,

b) Hawthorn should beat Collingwood (I'm not convince about the Hawks either but they should get up) &

c) your Melb v Rich prediction...well what can we say here "all personal team/fan bias aside" I don't think so but needless to say I disagree with your last prediction but not necessarily the result, but the margin. Let's not forget that Richmond beat Melbourne in the first game of last year.

If you get 8 out of 8 tipping in November that I congratulate you in advance.

I find it impossible to believe all your opinions when the first game is still four full months away. As yet no club has finalised its playing list. All clubs can still drop players before the pre-season draft on December 19. As yet no drafted player has kicked a football in anger while playing for his new club. As yet there has not been an Annual General Meeting for any club and there could be a few sparks flying at a few of them. As yet the practice matches have not wiped out any players with injuries. And you have all forgotten the Ansett Cup pre-season competition which also could take a toll of any club with injuries and/or suspensions. Ask me again the day before the first game, when all the teams are published in the media.
