I questioned the TBell decision and still do but the obvious answer for his inclusion is his tap work which is better than Phillips. Part of the reason they moved Lobb into the ruck was because of Tbells hitouts to advantage causing issues and allowing Shiel to really dominate.

Also Fyfe only had one clearance for the game, hard to dominate as a big inside mid when your ruck can’t feed you the ball easily.

Exchanging blood and sweat for an entire match and then can't put their arms around each other for the team song.

Eh. 7th year on an AFL list and no one has told him that he doesn't need to kick the ball that high for no reason.

Just what we were missing....

Had him cemented in best 22 but that performance can't be up to our standards.
Looks slow and indecisive with ball in hand and a couple of steps behind in general play.
Still doesn't chase or pressure with any intensity, but we already knew that.

We missed McKenna's run off half back.

Parish is cleaner and tougher inside than Merrett. Play him there.

We smacked them early but they adjusted, clogged our space and forced us to kick long to ... No one in particular.
Phillips should have played.

Not convinced by Cutler.
Still not convinced by Langford.

Hurley less than ordinary but should improve, had a corkie?

We missed easy goals and opportunities throughout which kept them in it, and we seemed to gradually drop in intensity from about halfway through 2nd Q. Big thank you to Shiel and Smith who kept us going.

We started well, Freo didn't.
We finished badly, Freo didn't.

Positives:
- Our defensive pressure and forward press in the first half stood out
- Moved the ball with a bit more versatility (not just through the corridor)
- Welcome to Essendon Jacob Townsend

Negatives:
- Kept bombing it into an undersized forward structure
- Struggled to get the game back on our terms
- Hurleys 1on1 defence was poor

Overall:
- A wins a win. Let's improve next week please.

This time last year we lost by 12 goals (vs GWS) and it was “season over”.

This year we chalk up a win (yep, unimpressive... but a win) and it’s more of the same commentary.

Said a few weeks ago... any team playing their first game under a new coach is always dangerous. They had a very good pre-season (Fremantle) ... we don’t play them again this year now. Move on.

And anybody that thinks that having no crowd won’t impact the game as a spectacle is kidding themselves. Every ground is a neutral venue now. This game we were on the negative side of that (and Dockers took advantage) ... our next game at the SCG and we will hold that ace. It will even itself out.

The GWS game set the tone for the rest of the season. We were overrated coming off a mid season patch where we got lucky against mostly average/bad teams.

Did not look like winning a final at any stage. I would love to be wrong.

I thought we were going to be adding can't play without a crowd to the list of things Essendon can't play in.

cant be underestimated given they've literally got nothing sport wise to watch over there atm.
