why do you suspect this would happen? I think it would polarise the supporters, and some would leave. I'd think pretty hard about it TBH
Lol.
Until we start winning. Then you'd all start claiming The Messiah has returned.

Honestly, I'll take anything apart from this shit. I can't believe anyone would say no to a change and I'd take Hird and all the baggage in the world if it means this club can be moderately competitive.

cost of living? or dons fans knew it might get ugly.

There's that & add in getting matched against a Round 0 participant which personally was a big turnoff for me.

Not that long ago the G would have been packed for this game as a proper R1 matchup. I'm glad the crowd was down but will the stupid MF's at AFL House get the message?

The game is being run by idiots.

I expected to get well beaten.
But I expected better forward connection and better defensive running.
I think if we lose to port and north then Brad Scott is finished and James hird will be our new coach.
I cannot wear wright or Langford.
May was poor but at least he is young and may have some upside.
I think many of our senior players give us little and show no physical intent.
Wright, Langford, McGrath, prior, fiorini, Perkins, duursma were all non competitive at different stages.
Johnson, Roberts, Nguyen, el acktar, May looked out of their depth.
I thought sharp and kondo had reasonable debuts.
El Achter is a long way off primarily due to athleticism.
Fiorini is a poor kick and panicked under duress.
I think the next two games might end some careers if the results go the wrong way.
Shout out to merrett, McKay, Redman and Durham who all toiled manfully.
You lost me at Hird...

The plan in this game was to win clearance and play a high zone to win territory. He didn’t have a good day in the box, but I think that plan was our best chance to win with the players at our disposal.

What I might be critical of is, if we continue to get beaten, we might need to play in a way that could win games in the future no matter how much we get beaten by this year.

But we all know majority of fans are gonna look at the score line and call for Scott’s head with the exact same criticisms “of no plan b” “no game plan” etc
Of course we should be playing the style we think will give us success in the future, even if we get belted, we'll learn which players can play that style and which can't.

It's hard to see the vision, I'd keep Scott as the rebuild coach now but the noise will get loud with every loss.

We likely get beaten by much larger margins by the better teams, and have shootouts with the teams we would usually beat. Then the fans will come with the same criticisms and more pressure.

It ends up as the same pressure, and you shouldn't coach in a way to ease pressure, who does that help in the long run? Probably his Aus Super account but not the club.

I would argue it was bomber who was driving most of that success.
correct.

need Bomber back at the club.

or someone from Geelong.

Jimmy Bartel.

Bomber bring his cats stars back Kelly, Chapman they know how farked this club is.

soft underbelly.

Rutten knew it, that's why he wanted competitors like Hobbs and VOSS.

Sharp looks like he has the competitiveness required. but we need more

I don’t think Brad is the issue. The cattle is dog shizen. Bunch of snr B graders who won’t get out of their playing confort zones.
I’m gonna have to disagree good systems can make lower quality players look better how we setup across the field is atrocious

He plays them because that's the best way to get cheap wins to save his job. He's known the senior B graders aren't up to it for years, but we keep running around with them.

Swans Dogs and Cats as well. Ah well long year ahead, Sharp was a nice positive.
Yes, it will be a long year.
I mentioned in the preseason thread that we are working on playing faster footy as the main change, but the issue will be it will look bad at times because we lack the cattle to make it effective. The players we need to move the ball by foot are all first and second year players. We still lack marking power in front of the footy.
The ruck division is below average. We are relying on Blaksiton to be number 1 right now and he is the backup guy you keep around for cheap. They dominated us due to the fact they had two good rucks.
There are lots of holes to fill.
Ruck. Forwards.
There is one issue Scott will have to get his head around. Parish and Merrett will not work in the midfield. Yes, both can produce offensively but both are poor defensively. It is not in their DNA and it hurst us. The midfield with both of them and Caldwell was too small. If Scott does not change it up at some stage, then he will get the criticism, and it will be deserved.

I do not totally buy that he is a dud coach who cannot inspire his players. I will not say he is a great coach. What I would say is the rebuild coach hardly never gets the cream. It takes a long time to build a list to decent after years of mediocre performance. We cannot do a Hawthorn as we are not building from a premiership era. We are really where Melbourne was at the start of the Taylor era as far as recruiting goes and a couple years into the Roos / Goodwin coaching regime. They had a lot of high draft picks that failed and had to go again under a new team.

In some ways Brad has shown some balls already this year. They are basically going to try and attack more but we are really not in a position list wise to pull it off. He could easily just stick with try and be safe and maybe we lose last night by 30 points. There has 100000% been a focus on moving the footy forward with their training. It has also been more kick related. We just lack the players to do it effectively and last night's turnovers and handball showed it.

Yes, it is his 4th year, and it is not totally unreasonable to want to see it going somewhere. However, you do not change list managers and drafting strategy and suddenly show drastic improvement after two draft / FA periods under them. Scott has to wear the fact he did not get the total read of the list despite knowing we needed a bit of work, but his first two years were also under the influence Dodoro as list manager and not Rosa. Changing your list manager is a big change when you are replacing one who has been average at best. It pretty much signals you will be having mixed results for at least 4 years while you turn the list over because the previous guy has not given you the list that is needed.

I really doubt any coach would be getting anything defined from us now. We just have to keep trying to balance the time into the young players.

I think it’s clear we can’t go with wright caddy may and Langford in the same squad we need more speed in the forward line and actually need to give the boys some room to lead I think we only hit wright once out on a decent lead cause it was so congested
Playing 4 talls is not the issue considering there’s now 5 on the bench and wright is also the second ruck. The issue is not having a group of smalls who can run / pressure and move quickly on transition.

Troubling.

Defence is non existent. Year after year he’s had every opportunity to get this right and he has shown these players have no idea what it is he’s trying to achieve.

Brad Scott won’t last the season.
It’ll be Solomon’s for the taking.

Brace yourselves kids. Brace yourselves.

I understand cutsy but the players need to be accountable for their own playing careers. What do they truly want out of this opportunity? Where is their internal motivation to push through and be the change the club needs to see. Coach can teach game plan and skills but the player has to have self belief. High performance coaching is not getting through. Coach can’t play for them. Working with what he has.

Can get the best coach in the entire league. That coach will say nope wipe the slate clean again. It’s going to take a massive effort to transform this group. Sheedy had a great bunch to work with. I’m not sure I’ll ever see that again in my lifetime but too much pressure on Brad when the playing group has big limitations in reaching its ceiling.

That’s my 2c. I’m no expert I’m just a supporter but I’d like to see Snr group in particular show consistent effort and competitiveness as bare minimums just as pro footballers. Too easy for me to say oh but haw are contenders, the team is young, we are rebuilding etc so I can feel better with last nights result being justified by those reasons. I’m not new a new ess supp it’s been decades for many of us. The pain will continue but the coach isn’t the major issue for me.

Agree this continues to be an issue. Wasn't convinced by Fiorini but one game for us isn't much of a sample.
9 of them are in their first or second year under Scott. We don’t have the cattle and hawthorn are simply a bad match up for us.

We will fare better playing against other choppers.
Agree with this, but wouldn't be surprised if Richmond and WC go past us.

I have given Scott a lot of patience but the selection of the team and the use of the 5th man on the bench doesn't fill me with hope. We genuinely would've played better with a 4 man bench last night. How can you expect players to get into a rhythm when most of them are around 60-75% ToG?

I have been very up for rule changes but geez I think things have maybe gone a bit far. It has looked more like AFL 9s in a few games already this year.

Good teams will just absolutely hammer weak ones who no longer have the same options to slow the ball down and take some time off the clock.

I’m thinking the same. There’s been some real beltings in the past fortnight where one team gets the upper hand for a brief moment and completely takes the game away from the opponent.

One thing that might change in time is the mindset of players, they will learn that it cuts both ways and if they keep at it they may have the opportunity to score heavily for a period and get back into a game

why did he play so little time on ground for our better players.

ruined my supercoach scores and multis (need 1 more disp from caldwell) but also does it allow us a greater chance of winning with Jye, Sam, Darcy and Archie Roberts spending so much time on the pine.

sharp and may understandable but the next 4???? least time on ground for us.
