same old. Wish I could see some form of game day coaching from scott but still haven't seen it.
I wish I could see some kind of identity of game style from the preseason, or anything that indicates how they were trying to play. The players mostly looked lost and I don’t even mean just the young ones.

Hawthorn Marks inside 50: 23

Hawthorn had 69 'inside 50s'. To allow a 1/3 of their inside 50s to be marked is disgraceful. The best teams average 12-15 marks inside 50. How many times did we see our defenders letting their forwards get a lead 10 metres away and trying to catch up for the mark. Bugger all intercept marks. I'd kill for a decent organised defence.

I’m happy to give the defensive efforts a pass because of the speed and accuracy the ball was coming in. They had a really tough job.

why did he play so little time on ground for our better players.

ruined my supercoach scores and multis (need 1 more disp from caldwell) but also does it allow us a greater chance of winning with Jye, Sam, Darcy and Archie Roberts spending so much time on the pine.

sharp and may understandable but the next 4???? least time on ground
He’s not perfect KP. I’m not here defending him to annoy anyone just saying that the problems we have extend beyond it being just the coach.
I read a lot on this site. Many opp supporters not happy with their own clubs coaching decisions even during the successful moments.

sorry about your SC scores.

Troubling.

Defence is non existent. Year after year he’s had every opportunity to get this right and he has shown these players have no idea what it is he’s trying to achieve.

Brad Scott won’t last the season.
It’ll be Solomon’s for the taking.

Brace yourselves kids. Brace yourselves.

I suspect this will play out one way or the other.

Yes, it will be a long year.
I mentioned in the preseason thread that we are working on playing faster footy as the main change, but the issue will be it will look bad at times because we lack the cattle to make it effective. The players we need to move the ball by foot are all first and second year players. We still lack marking power in front of the footy.
The ruck division is below average. We are relying on Blaksiton to be number 1 right now and he is the backup guy you keep around for cheap. They dominated us due to the fact they had two good rucks.
There are lots of holes to fill.
Ruck. Forwards.
There is one issue Scott will have to get his head around. Parish and Merrett will not work in the midfield. Yes, both can produce offensively but both are poor defensively. It is not in their DNA and it hurst us. The midfield with both of them and Caldwell was too small. If Scott does not change it up at some stage, then he will get the criticism, and it will be deserved.

I do not totally buy that he is a dud coach who cannot inspire his players. I will not say he is a great coach. What I would say is the rebuild coach hardly never gets the cream. It takes a long time to build a list to decent after years of mediocre performance. We cannot do a Hawthorn as we are not building from a premiership era. We are really where Melbourne was at the start of the Taylor era as far as recruiting goes and a couple years into the Roos / Goodwin coaching regime. They had a lot of high draft picks that failed and had to go again under a new team.

In some ways Brad has shown some balls already this year. They are basically going to try and attack more but we are really not in a position list wise to pull it off. He could easily just stick with try and be safe and maybe we lose last night by 30 points. There has 100000% been a focus on moving the footy forward with their training. It has also been more kick related. We just lack the players to do it effectively and last night's turnovers and handball showed it.

Yes, it is his 4th year, and it is not totally unreasonable to want to see it going somewhere. However, you do not change list managers and drafting strategy and suddenly show drastic improvement after two draft / FA periods under them. Scott has to wear the fact he did not get the total read of the list despite knowing we needed a bit of work, but his first two years were also under the influence Dodoro as list manager and not Rosa. Changing your list manager is a big change when you are replacing one who has been average at best. It pretty much signals you will be having mixed results for at least 4 years while you turn the list over because the previous guy has not given you the list that is needed.

I really doubt any coach would be getting anything defined from us now. We just have to keep trying to balance the time into the young players.
Any idea why Sharp wasn't in the midfield more?

Also, playingPerkins off such a limited preseason indefensible IMO.

First year player. How much do you want to press him?

Perkins played full midfield minutes in the VFL last week.
His prep was two 50% games and one 100% game over 3 weeks. It is more than enough to play half forward.
If Kako is not injured Perkins doesn’t play.

I think we can all agree that King Patty’s SuperCoach score tanking is the real tragedy out of last night and that we all have a minute of silence in solidarity.

That and punting on football is a mugs game.

Cheers.

I only saw the first half at Young and Jacksons as was in the city seeing a band. First quarter looked ok. Once the floodgates opened up in the second we had no answer.

Teams playing opening round have a huge advantage IMO. If OR is to stay i'd like to see the teams that played just play each other the next week.

Had no answer to Gunston by the looks.

We as supporters have two options.

To play a game style with guys we mainly just drafted.

Potential Cons
  • likely get pumped weekly by good teams
  • have losses vs teams we would usually have a chance against
  • have more senior players leave at seasons end
  • might struggle to bring in recruits and retain senior players
-young players lose confidence and don’t learn how to win.

Potential Pros
  • fast track young guys into bigger roles
  • play a more modern game style that resembles the top teams
  • access to the top of the draft
  • maybe bounce quicker than expected and be a destination club.

Or

Have a more conservative approach to each game, finish as high as possible.

Potential Cons-
  • not as much exposure of young guys in key roles
  • sometimes have to play ugly football to win games
  • sometimes put winning over development
  • choosing senior players or youth

Likely Pros
  • retaining our required senior players
  • slowly replace non required senior guys with more developed younger guys.
  • likely finish higher and can sell the dream to recruits.

Regardless of the scenario we will have fans complaining about the game plan, plan b and simply unsatisfied with not winning.

outsider looking in that’s a big Archie Roberts fan.
Your midfield just hunts the ball all 3 got sucked inside still lost the contest and got destroyed on the outside. McGrath looks lost back but looked really good in the midfield end of last year and actually defended in there. Why wouldn’t Roberts play back give that drive and Andy play as a midfielder. Too much ball hungry mids not enough balance in my view

No balance is right but Roberts has got an issue with butchering the footy out of half back and we want to transition into Kondo / Johnson / Farrow as the distributors.

Midfield is still imbalanced with Parish in there, he’s not a good fit for our mix. Individually will play a decent enough game, but we’d be better balanced with someone more defensive in his position.

I suggested this and am all for it. McGrath give us mid burst and defensive coverage from the midfield and will also sacrifice his own game following structure instead of ball hunting.

Johnson still a while off being a good enough defensively, he also can often to a hospital handball under physical pressure. Roberts has the physicality and the competitiveness to beat someone defensively.

I personally would love to see the switch.

I also would love to see duursma and redmon change roles to see how it looks

He had a good first half, but yeah too many midget ball hunters. Sharp or McGrath might give us more balance on the outside of stoppage.

Honestly don’t see any major mistakes by Roberts kicking when he’s got no pressure only time I see turnovers is when he’s evaded a tackle or 2 then just dump kicks it cause there’s no options. Least he actually defends and has a crack can’t say the same about any other defender you got. McKay Reid redman all way to passive and have no fight about them. Least Roberts will improve his skills over the next few years but you can’t train heart and physicality

Our defense is lost whenever Ridley doesn't play.

Is no one else capable of organising us on field?

Kicking efficiency at mid 50% says he has a bit to sharpen up. Takes too many kicks that are beyond his ability.
Great comparative player but his flaw is ball use.
The midfield has a defensive issue as well.
Long term he is more suited there.

It’s all about the cattle. There was a massive gap between top 10 and the rest last season. With the new rules that favour the faster, better disposal teams ie the top 10 the gap is going to get wider. Saints May be closer to top 10 but not sure anyone else.

So have to look at it as two leagues. Hopefully we win a few against bottom 7-8 in “our league”. There will be a lot of thrashings this season with maybe the odd upset

I can see this happening but with no upsets - none from us anyway.
The only upset will be the fanbase.
