AFL Autopsy RND 13: Done By The Blues

I noticed this the first week Ridley came back. He's a ball retention user, he doesn't really go for the corridor kick all that often. Redman and Martin more likely to get the overlap handball and run straight at the goals.
Watched a different first game back than I did, because I remember him kicking zone busters?

He was sick. Did not play VFL last week.
He gives blokes plenty of chances but Jones got dropped last year as did Weideman in the end. So far he has not had to swing the axe massively on form this year as we have been winning games.
Forwardline structure was better back then when Weideman was providing that tall option. Two talls down the line, one short one deeper and smalls feeding off. It isn't rocket surgery.

Langford, Jones and Stringer - none led up at the footy with intent. They all hoped to cheat back into space. Langford and Jones found that space and some touches out on the boundary. Stringer did less than that, and tried for the miracle stuff #matchwinner. We lament our inaccuracy once again.

You've been saying it - we need a true CHF. I think 2MP looks better when he's up the ground. I'm thinking maybe they should try Cox out of the goal square.

It’s disappointing that the guys who are supposed to be good set shots missed plenty against GC and Carlton.
It's huge at the moment. I know our shots have tended to be from tougher spots but some easy ones still missed. If we straighten up the last two matches we sit well clear in second. After Menzie initially celebrated that early set shot only for it to shave the inside of the post I thought it wasn't going to be our night. Players including some experienced ones in unchartered territory with a certain expectation on their shoulders. They will need to work through this, there was a time Breust was missing almost every important shot he was taking, Roughy was suspect under pressure too. Later they became the most reliable kicks in big moments.

Not as down as some about the result. Think the Blues have some improvement in them on that performance but so do we. They scored 15 goals from just 40 inside 50s …we had 20 more inside 50s and had the ball more.

Add Draper, Redman, Parish and Duursma back to that team and we’d be alright

We do seem better coached this year.

Been off in few aspects the last few weeks but have been able to adjust and still be competeive.

Martin moving up the ground, Cox fwd last week. Think our adjustment from bombing it long to then lowering the eyes and looking central after half time was good coaching. Unfortunately just kept missing.

We also varied our defensive match ups and really limited the impact of cripps and Walsh.

Durham is a star and sets the tone, doesn't rack up possessions but gives his all. Great to see someone keen to set the tone alongside Merrett.

Effort and coaching have been our biggest improvements this year. Just need to keep building the personnel and filling the gaps on our list by rotating through more young blokes who have deserve a game based on vfl form.

Do not disagree. Maybe they should look at Cox forward. Did not get a lot out of him on the wing last night. Agree with your post in the other thread about Stringer. As good as he can be he is a it of a third wheel with Langford playing a similar role as a forward. Would be different if he was a reliable mark.

He did not give Caddy, “plenty of chances”. He ‘dropped’ him as soon as he could. And we just watched Jones, Langford and Wright kick 1 goal between them.
He is the new bloke and Scott backed Jones in and Caddy was actually sick. It is not like Caddy has been in scintillating form in the VFL every week . He got a chance when Jones got suspended. My view is he has to earn the spot with a few good VFL games in a row which has not happened for him for various reasons. If he holds form he will get some games in the same way as Davey and Tsatas have. Unlike Bryan I know the coach rates Caddy.

As frustrating as the game was the loss doesn't undo all the strides made in the first half. We still won those games.

The last time we've been in this position and faded in the 2nd half it's been due to 10 goal+ hidings so you can't say, as yet, that it's the same old Essendon.

But really Brad had a shocker for large parts of last night alongside the players and you can't win games of football when both coach and players are off. One can cancel out the other but not both.

Our gameplan is clearly to get it in long and deep to Jones, Wright and Langford and that is, also clearly, not working. Moving Menzies and Martin at half time worked but what else did he do to adjust in the box? Martin forward is his 1 wood emergency plan at the moment, and again, Carlton adjusted and we had no more moves.

The last 3 definitely. Not sold on Draper. I think we're missing Parish more than a lot of supporters would care to admit.

Team balance just feels off. Too many guys halfway between positions, not quite big enough or small enough for their roles. Are Martin, Hind, Kelly, Cox back or forward or wing? Are Gresh, Guelf, Perkins, Menzie flankers or small forwards? It's all a bit confused. Blues look way better structured. Hoping second half of the year we just make some decisions and stick to it.

Draper in with Goldy
Caddy in for 2mp
Jones playing higher
Cox and Hind wing
Kelly back or out
Martin center forward
Gresh and Guelf deeper

We lost. Expected.
If we kicked straight we might have won.
Yes there are plenty of elements that need work but that’s where we are at right now. Effort and intent was there.

Foamers calling for Tsatas to be delisted etc need their heads examined.
Seriously, pasting a kid coming in as the sub in front of 90k into a hot last qtr? Give him a chance ffs. But that’s fairly normal on this forum. Jump on someone when they have a bad week then back on the bandwagon the next.

The last sentence implies you know for a fact Scott doesn't rate Bryan?

Convert early, scoreboard pressure, different game.

That said we needed some reality checks and this was one. We're tracking in the right direction but a long way off where we need to be. Still plenty of holes in the list which games like this highlight.

He also moved Durham forward and put Stringer in the middle. Probably could have done that sooner but it was good thinking given the forwards weren't marking. Duz will go for marks or scrap it out on the deck.

Well Brad has not told me personally but there is a reason why Nick does not get a game despite him being in the best 3 or 4 in the VFL every week and I have mentioned it 1000 times. They do not rate him because he has no physical presence and his work rate up and down the ground is not at Goldstein's level.
Goldy has his limitations now days and is not a physical animal as such but if you watch his game he gets up and down the ground all night . He will be in the back pocket and then without hesitation he will be pushing hard the other way. He got done by DeKoning around the ground numbers wise but it was more he was playing a separate role where after the ruck they did not really play on each other.
Scott will play Draper ahead of Bryan because of the physical side of thinks.
Nick is the same player he was at the start of last year.
To be very clear. Yes I am implying that right now the coach does not rate him.
