Sorry but you cant set standards defensively anyway if your dropping big name players only to reinstate Murphy .

That just doesnt make any sense Murph has no interest in the defensive side of the game .

I agree, at this point with our season already over we need to reward murph for what he’s given us through his career.
As you said make him the sub if need be, just get him to 300

You’ve said this before and the more I see it’s hard to argue. BUT how does a kid get rated in the best 3 of his draft year (some rated him 1) and then not develop his ability to run at AFL standard after 4 years?
We’ve supposedly got the best fitness guy in the business and he has now played 50 games. It just doesn’t make sense.
I know not everyone can be a truly elite runner but Im staggered we can’t get him to a point where he is not exposed by other teams.
On what I saw Saturday, a bigger issue is his confidence. I say coaches have confused him so much he has no idea what to do. He played more instinctive football when he got to us.
It seems we don’t develop players as much as break them down. What a disgrace.

Contradictory statements. IMO Murph is a big part of the lack of standards, coming off a 5 touch game (admittedly as a sub, but on the ground for 40 ish minutes)

Agree 1000%, I just asked the same question here, so why can’t a guy who can’t run be so impressive as a junior mid???

Everyone on the inside knew about it, but Carlton recruiters seemed to be out of the loop.

oh that’s not good, will mean they will probably play with Pitto & TDK again.. I would rather throw JSOS in the ruck to relieve TDK than have Pitto play.. it’s clear having both him and De Konig in the side doesn’t work..

It’s a pity our group has to be shamed into doing AFL 101 basics, but I’m glad certain frauds are being called out for lack of effort. The performance of any club or organisation is downstream from its culture, the culture needs to start changing immediately then hopefully positive results will look after themselves

I've got an idea that has been used before by clubs in our position and amazingly it has worked.
Press the reset button and tell the players to go out there and enjoy themselves. Play with freedom and back yourselves....enjoy your footy.
It may only work for one game but it can be a starting point.
Currently the players are so bound up that they are stagnant and clueless.

Murph 27 Touches, 5 clearances and 3 tackles in the VFL
Samo 25 Touches, 9 clearances and 8 tackles in the VFL

Both displayed the attitude I'd like to see from dropped players.

Casboult after Mirkov went down I didn't know he had that left in him. Would prefer him in the ruck vs Pittonet if his knee can take it. Disappointing that he's likely suspended for a week.

We need to start well. If we can start well we will get confidence from it. For the first 5 minutes don’t worry about putting in effort just search to kick the first goal. If you don’t kick the first, always look to respond. Whether that’s by chasing, tackling, picking up up a ground ball, taking a mark or kicking a goal…always go when it’s your turn.
We need to be clean. Our decisions need to be measured and we have to take the game on.
I think our current playing group are in their own heads at the moment. They’re stuck in their shells. Need to crack that b**** right open.
I think jones, McKay, weitering, docherty, Cripps, Fisher, SPS need to all lift their output. They are the group I really believe in that will take this club further but they’ve got to really play through the coach. The coach wants them to be aggressive in attack. They trained it all pre season so just go out there and at least show it on the field. F*** defence. I don’t really care about it to be honest. It’s overrated. If they just play with an aggression then the rest will take care of itself. I’ve seen this group play with aggression before too and our ball movement is very threatening. All the pieces are on this list to kick a winning score. Make it work coaching group. Get them believing again.
i would bring in honey for Martin if he’s crook. Plowman or Williamson for parks if he’s down as well. I think fisher is playing well enough to stay in and I think Fogarty had the usual Geelong post bye break hangover but I’m very close on a swap for SPS if he doesn’t lift as well.

also. for some reason and it may just be me but I feel like Dow is close to having a big game soon. He’s been getting the ball a lot on the inside at the moment and finding a lot of time and space but he’s not getting the ball on the outside enough. I think we should sign him right now when his stocks are low. Offer him a 3 year extension and just keep developing him into a stoppage specialist. Would give cripps more time up forward to prolong his career.

I don't think SOS is a bad kick. This year has been poor but lets face it he's only kicked 4 goals 9 behinds in total. Over his career is is just over 50%
It probably tells you more about where he has his shots than any technical deficiency.

I've noticed with SOS that a lot of his shots are from low percentage positions. Like right on the edge of his range or 40m out on a sharp angle. I can't remember the last time actually had a shot from 35m on a slight-to-no angle. I think that has an impact on his stats.

Not to suggest he's a good kick, even from 30m out on a 45 degree angle I'd only put him at about 60%, but I don't think he's a genuine 4 goals 9 behinds type kick.

Sounds very much like there will be crowds, latest I heard was 50% is now on the cards.

Yeah that was Pittonet coming from the other way. Pitto might have been 1m closer, but Dow was facing the right way to attack the ball, gather and exit the D50. Instead he saw Pitto and thought...I'll leave it to the big guy to get a ground ball and handball it to me.

I was speechless when I saw Dow make that decision.

Agree, Dow seems very much a player who is not sure of his position in the side and is second guessing what has always come naturally to him in regards to getting the ball.

Just so frustrating at the moment.
If a team is in a learning stage you’re usually willing to sacrifice some elements of the game - skill errors, breakdowns in system, players not on the same page, etc.
We should not be considered as a learning team. This should be when we challenge for top 8.
What is most frustrating is that we are excelling at NO area of the game. Not looking at stats, just the eye test - can anyone pinpoint ONE skill/attribute/behaviour where we are elite, or even above average?
To my untrained eye, we are terrible at:
Centre bounce clearance
Stoppage
Tackling
Pressure
Disposal efficiency
Team defence
Forward 50 entries
Goal kicking
General effort

I mean, that’s some fairly fundamental areas of the game. You can survive with one or two being subpar, if the others are league average or better.

That footage shown on OTC was just an indictment. Pretty much no-one at the club is immune from this criticism. The coaching/strategy is inadequate, the effort from (most of) the players needs to be questioned, standards need to be expected or punished accordingly if not met.
There were rumours of players at the club being critical of team selection integrity and not being totally aware of the gameplan. That footage from Saturday is proof that our defensive “system” is flawed. Either it is not a functioning system, the coaches are unable to teach/enforce it, or the players can’t/won’t implement it.
None of those reasons indicate a club in the right hands.

I would go this weekend but I do not trust myself enough to not lose my s**t if the team continues to play the way they have.
That said, I felt the same way before the Lions 2 years ago. At half time it looked like trouble and then Cripps kicked 4 and we had a great win.
I feel like I’m in an abusive relationship and keep coming back for me on the fleeting chance we have a good day!
