I decided to watch a replay of that contentious first ten minutes last night. Wasn't really sure where to post it but I'll put it in here. Focus is on the various ruck contests work, and I've struck out the names of the guys that got injured, so you can see where their impact was during that 10 minutes of football.

____

We started with Parish, Shiel, Merrett, Draper in the middle. Draper's jumper was torn almost in two with 19 minutes 48 on the clock, and the umpire sent him to get a new one. He was then benched for the remainder of the first rotation.

The ball up was then attended by Shiel, Parish, McGrath, Wright. Their ruck outbodied Wright and got a big mitt on it, they cleared the ball to Fantasia who kicked it to full forward. Dixon knocked Francis to the ground and took off after the ball, ran onto it with Francis scrambling 5m behind him and soccered their first goal from the square.

Second bounce, Shiel, Merrett, Parish, Wright. Wright jumped early and missed it completely, Lycett got another big mitt on it and Wright ran onto it, got smothered at once and then handballed it to Merrett, who cleared it to Ham just outside 50. By the time all that had happened, the fifty was flooded with players, Ham went back, kicked to full forward and was intercepted by Aliir. They start a slow kick-mark game down the nearside wing, where it is knocked out of bounds.

Throw in from the near-side wing, McGrath got it from Lycett but there was a ruck infringement against Wright, free kick to Port just outside the centre square (our end). They play on, kick it down the line. Laverde spoiled the mark but a free was paid against him (I can't really pick it, I think because Ladhams fell over and they thought he was pushed?) – another free to Port anyway, just outside the centre square at their forward end. They then kick short, mark and try to play on, tackled, handball it out, quick kick inside 50 and Butters takes a nice mark about 40 metres out on about a 25º angle. This happened because Ham was about 3m off his man jogging into their forward 50 and watching the play over his shoulder. Butters was goal-side and sprinted off to take the mark while Ham was occupied. Dixon had also thought to run into the same space but pulled up short, keeping Francis (who was behind him) out of the way. Dixon and Butters played smart – although it would be smarter not to run into the each others' space – Ham not so much. Butters converts the goal.

That's the first 2.5 minutes. 2 goals nil.

Third centre bounce, Parish, McGrath, Shiel, Draper (he had five minutes on the bench, including stoppages). Ball favours Lycett, who taps it down to #15, and clears it straight into their forward line with pressure on the kick from Parish. Francis smartens up, gets in front of Dixon and flies for the ball. Dixon gives away a free kick for hands in the back. Francis bombs it up to the contest on the far-side wing, no one marks it but Cox runs onto it and is tackled by Aliir.

Ball up, McGrath, Shiel, Ham, Draper. Draper outbodied, Lycett sends it straight to Andy's man, whom he immediately tackles and the ball is released to a Port player, who kicks it up the line and out of bounds.

Throw in on the far-side wing, McGrath, Shiel, Parish, Ham, Draper. Lycett wins the tap, which goes between Parish's legs to Parish's opponent, who clears it to their defensive side. Snelling applies pressure, and the ball is kicked back to Port's forward line towards Dixon. Spoiled down and then caught by another Port player. Kicks for goal but dribbles along the face of goal and Francis picks it up to send it back out to the near side flank, where Walla is pushed trying to mark it and sort of flies out of bounds with the ball bouncing out with him. Free kick, Essendon. Short kick, bombed to the square, contested ball, #18 runs onto it, Snelling tackles him pinning both arms. They struggle for a moment with the ball held in, but nothing is called and Snelling slings him to the ground. Dangerous tackle, free kick to Port. Port choose to switch, kicking backwards and around to the far-side wing, where a scrubber of a kick goes out of bounds.

Throw in on the far-side wing. Caldwell, McGrath, Parish, Draper... Ham, Langford? Congestion of our own making... Draper wins the tap, sends it back towards the boundary where one Port player has three of our blokes around him. McGrath tackles, ball pinned underneath, ball up.

Ball up on the far-side wing, Caldwell, McGrath, Parish, Draper. Draper taps it to Parish, knocked out of his hands by Gray, who takes it very close to the wing and handballs with Caldwell hanging off him, they clear the ball down the wing with a chain of handballs. Kick inside 50 from Wines is partially impeded by Hind catching him and hanging onto the back of his jumper like a dead weight. Ball in dispute and eventually gathered by Hind with his afterburners on, kicks it to Merrett who marks on the nearside wing, just outside 50. Boots it long intended for Walla, but is almost intercepted with Walla having to run forward, jump high and twist for it. Free kick, Port Adelaide, for 'interfering with the arms'. Kick mark slow down the wing, Ridley intercepts the long ball inside 50, and kicks it back to Merrett who marks in the exact same spot he was earlier. Overlap handball to Redman, who again kicks down to Walla. This time, it goes over the heads of the defenders and Walla runs onto it, crumbs it and scoops it up to Snelling, who is duly tackled, handballs to Cox, who kicks towards the forward pocket where it bounces out of bounds.

Throw in from the nearside forward flank. Caldwell, Parish, Hooker. Not sure who was intended as the third. Lycett taps to Caldwell who is piledriven into the turf, ball up.

Ball up in the middle of F50, Caldwell, Parish, Shiel, Hooker. Lycett catches it out of the ruck, handballs to a Port player under a lot of pressure sort of bounces off him and rolls along the ground where another Port player picks it up and kicks it towards the centre square. Lots of congestion, disputed ball, Langford picks it up and handballs it but it goes to a Port player, who then handballs backwards a few times back into our F50. The ball is then kicked back into disputed territory, with another succession of handballs and tackles, before Port kicks it to the far-side wing, where Cox runs onto it and is immediately tackled by Duursma. Ball spills out and another Port player picks it up, plays on, kicks it down to their F50, where Fantasia takes a clean mark in space on the opposite flank. He snaps for goal and it's a behind.

7 minutes of game time have elapsed, we've done several laps of the field for the last five minutes for a solitary behind. Score; Port 2.1.13 Ess 0.0.0.

Ridley takes the kick in, sends it to the near-side wing where Hooker is waiting with #17. Ball in dispute, Port player picks it up and Hooker tackles. Free kick, Essendon. Kick intercepted halfway up the wing, and sent to a loose man standing in the centre circle, and then kicked into space on the far side wing, forward of centre for Port. Laverde gets to it and dives on it but it's knocked out and Port re-acquires possession. Clean mark to Gray just outside 50, somehow got the run on Ridley, he then kicks to Georgiades who takes a clean mark at 35m ~45º. No idea who his opponent was, or where they were in that moment. Possibly back in the centre square still. Goal. 3.1.19 – 0.0.0.

Centre bounce, McGrath, Shiel, Merrett, Draper. Neither of them gets a hand to it, ball dribbles off and Shiel runs onto it with a helpful bump from Draper on his opponent, Shiel handballs it up to Hind. Hind runs around in a hook then bombs it back to the top of our 50m arc, where Wright blindly smacks it down and, unfortunately, straight into the arms of a Port player. The ball is then kicked to the far-side wing, where Cahill's opponent marks it uncontested and kicks it to Hind's opponent, who also takes an uncontested mark. It is then kicked inside 50 to Georgiades, who had run up from deep forward (out of frame) with Laverde behind him and marks it at ground-level, 35m out and a slight angle. 4.1.25, 0.0.0.

And that's the 10 minute mark of the first quarter.

You should do the post game analysis for the club.

This is more effort than I’ve put into a thread for some time

It’s one of those things right. And now he’s injured so what’s that gonna mean for us going forward... Phillips also seems to be injured 😕
