I’m sick of this notion that somehow the Hawthorn picks on offer would help us more than our best player being on the park to take a load of responsibility off the kids. We are already bereft of senior talent to take the load off. The Hawthorn picks were utter shit. We ended up with their top pick offer anyway and we couldn’t use any extra picks. What more could we have gotten from the draft than we got? We did really well in last year’s draft. It’s one of the few successes of late. Any other player on our list and I might agree with you. But not our only elite player, reigning BnF, and captain at the time, who should give us something at the pointy end of the draft. Add to that the farce of basement clubs being held to ransom (right to the end of trade period), for their best contracted players… that is something that we should never be entertaining. It was undoubtedly the right decision but emotions take hold of our rationality when we lose badly, don’t it?

we heard this in October. well, we're 3 games into the season, we got slaughtered in two of them and in the third one which we were in a winnable position, one of the few times we'll be in a winnable position all season, Zach did nothing until a junk time goal which he celebrated like it was Zaka on ANZAC day.

what great help zach is providing.

Yep, 3 games. It’s a long season.

Prior was diabolical. Just let players take marks at will 5m in fornt of him while jogging. Zero desperation.

Look at Maynard for the Pies, love him or hate him, he would have made the spoil most times if he was in Prior's position.

Prior was first for Essendon for Dreamteam points, third for Supercoach points (fantasy stuff isn't everything I know but I'm just quoting the numbers). He had 18 possessions, at 83% efficiency. He had the second most amount of tackles (5) only behind Merrett's 9.

Yes, he's a C-Grade player and has his limitations, and let's face it, no one really played well on Saturday, but Prior was the last of our problems. You could argue he was our best player. Diabolical? Give me a break. There were at least 18-20 Bombers players worse than him on Saturday.

Got beaten on the leading player every time!
He was poor.

Our list isn't good enough and we are not even in a position to start suggesting we are in a rebuild. A rebuild is when you have a clear plan, a core base you are going to build from and a clear game plan you are working to implement. We have none of those things.

Scott is a disaster as a coach and is not the future. Must be moved on and moved on quickly.

Langford and Parish are roasted, cooked, done, finished but given our extreme lack of options, I would keep playing them in the hope they put in a few vintage performances. Ridley and Redman consistently joining the injury list doesn't help. Making McGrath, perhaps the softest #1 pick in history, the captain was a large mistake. McGrath has no ability to win the contested ball, no ability to inspire and leads the clanger brigade more often than not.

Caddy is exciting but isn't working hard enough and leads to the wrong areas consistently. Kako is exciting but not working in tandem with his leading forwards.

The regression of Roberts, Caldwell and Durham is scary. They look like shadows of the players we thought they were.

Our basic football skills are not there, we can't kick or handball with consistency and most of the team are panic agents. Composure is an over used word but apt in this situation. I believe the lack of composure and the panic on show is partially a result of the non existent game plan. They simply do not seem to know what they are meant to be doing, nor how to do anything much really.

This is as low as I have seen the club and that included the saga years. There is no heart, no passion and absolutely not enough talent on this list to have hope we will be ready to compete in even another decade. Holding on to Merrett was a mistake, not because he isn't a gun football but because we are nowhere near ready to need a player of his quality. We should have taken the picks on offer and given ourselves another few chances to pick up some quality.

Until we change the coach and the entire club approach.. nothing will change.

I think I can see an offensive game plan at times. The skills are really letting it down though.

I wonder if the skills improve will it also let the defense setup better.

Our defence gets absolutely burned because of turnovers, not much they can do when the ball comes back straight down the corridor at speed.

That is a negative we want to finish 18th we need to obtain as much elite talent from the draft as possible for the next few years
It won’t matter because they’ll make Hird coach and he’ll trade away the next 3 years of picks chasing mediocre plodders in a desperate grab for quick results

If we didnt keep Zach, we probably needed to delist someone else (to use extra draft picks), maybe McMahon, but I guess with Martin injury we add him back in SSP period.

Out Merrett, McMahon, In + one of Nairn/Lindsay(pick 10) +Sweid (matched with 22)+ 2026 F1 Hawks + later McMahon

10,22,F1

say we get 11 rather than 10 off Blues so still get sharp.

We already got their pick via Carlton. It was used on Sharp. So the exact same pick they offered for Merrett.

This was assuming we did the deal with hawks for merrett.

Still get Sharp regard less. whether its 10 or 11.

The Hawks had Pick 9, offered it to us for Merrett, then traded it to Carlton (ironically, since it was Carlton's pick they'd traded in the year prior) who then traded it to us.

Amusingly, the Hawks also gave Carlton the Pick 43 they traded to us for Kondogiannis.

The best player from a draft is often not the first pick. And development is very important. If a club is not good at developing players, it won’t thrive even with plenty of young talent.
