Just caught the replay. Happy to get the win of course but gee wizz even a moderately better team would've absolutely torched us.

I fell asleep on the replay last night :/ gonna have to try again today. But I think you are correct from what I remember seeing. Hopefully all the players being praised right now aren’t too sucked in by it, they’ll be whipping boys again by Anzac DayJust caught the replay. Straw poll; what was more impressive?
(a) our field kicking?
(b) our contested marking around the ground
(c) our ability to hit up at the ball carrier, especially going forward
something different about how we played stylistically last night compared to almost all our other games this year. Maybe we were more efficient, or better around the ground, or perhaps the field kicking has improved (decision making?).Just caught the replay. yeh, agreed. And it wasn't just the same blokes. Duursma, Menzie (did not have this on my bingo card as a contested marker), Durham were all grabbing them.Marking for mine. Watching live there were a few times that if the mark had not stuck Melbourne would have been off and running
Menzie has always been a good mark for his size. Not Bartel like (whose marking was incredibly underrated and probably the best mark under 190 cm I've seen) but it shouldn't be surprising that he can do it.yeh, agreed. The field kicking from defence was impressive. Having Reid distribute along with Ridley and Roberts made me much more comfortable rebounding from defence. Sans McGrath's hack/dump kicks we were actually quite good in this regard
Dermott Brereton before your time Eth?Menzie has always been a good mark for his size. Not Bartel like (whose marking was incredibly underrated and probably the best mark under 190 cm I've seen) but it shouldn't be surprising that he can do it.
YesDermott Brereton before your time Eth?
Dermot was a “tall” tho, in 1980s termsDermott Brereton before your time Eth?
I will always rate Derm very highly. Even back then a 186cm target CHF was extremely short. He was not a Langford. He was a Carey. Big difference.Dermot was a “tall” tho, in 1980s terms
He was the equivalent of a Langford these days
Menzie uses his body well to protect the space where the ball will land. Not really a big overhead small forward like Elliott, Bartel & Lincoln McCarthy
Sure but all I’m saying is that 194 is the new 186I will always rate Derm very highly. Even back then a 186cm target CHF was extremely short. He was not a Langford. He was a Carey. Big difference.
Or James HirdDermott Brereton before your time Eth?
Me too. Came in at start of 3rd Q just when Melb got its run on. Decided I'd rather see the good part of the game than the bit where we get run down so put it on to replay from start. Then fell asleep in second Q. Woke to find we'd won.I fell asleep on the replay last night :/ gonna have to try again today. But I think you are correct from what I remember seeing. Yeah to be fair I didn’t word that very well. I was backing up your statement that he played like a tall despite being short.Sure but all I’m saying is that 194 is the new 186
And the obe bomb i saw was slightly fumbled by May and Marto was right there to grab it.I can’t recall an Essendon game where there was a deliberate no-bombing policy…very disciplined
Having thought about it I reckon that Jesse Hogan (who isn’t a CHF) is the only imposing ‘short tall’ we have. But even so he is about the same height as the other top 2 CHFs of Brereton’s era, Kernahan and Merrett.Dermot was a “tall” tho, in 1980s terms
