Just caught the replay. Happy to get the win of course but gee wizz even a moderately better team would've absolutely torched us.
I fell asleep on the replay last night :/ gonna have to try again today. But I think you are correct from what I remember seeing. Hopefully all the players being praised right now aren’t too sucked in by it, they’ll be whipping boys again by Anzac Day 😅

My fav passage of play was the chip kicking around until Durham marks but doesn’t kick for goal. It only continues to get passed around again. Reminds me of those pass the parcel games I played at kids birthday parties 🥳

something different about how we played stylistically last night compared to almost all our other games this year. Maybe we were more efficient, or better around the ground, or perhaps the field kicking has improved (decision making?).

Something different about it though

Marking for mine. Watching live there were a few times that if the mark had not stuck Melbourne would have been off and running
yeh, agreed. And it wasn't just the same blokes. Duursma, Menzie (did not have this on my bingo card as a contested marker), Durham were all grabbing them.

The field kicking from defence was impressive. Having Reid distribute along with Ridley and Roberts made me much more comfortable rebounding from defence. Sans McGrath's hack/dump kicks we were actually quite good in this regard

Menzie has always been a good mark for his size. Not Bartel like (whose marking was incredibly underrated and probably the best mark under 190 cm I've seen) but it shouldn't be surprising that he can do it.

Good win for a young side, especially to compose ourselves and kick away after they piled on 5 goals in 3rd qtr.
But they are possibly the worst team in the comp for both applying pressure to the ball carrier and efficiency going inside 50, so it's no wonder we all of a sudden looked slick with our ball movement and the backline looked like a brick wall.
Hopefully it gives the guys more confidence going forward though as I think there is something to work with if they keep building the cohesion.

It was a good win. I was worried with their losing streak and all. I think we only played one poor half against Adelaide and the rest has been not to bad.

Edit: one shitty quarter against Hawthorn too.

Dermot was a “tall” tho, in 1980s terms

He was the equivalent of a Langford these days

Menzie uses his body well to protect the space where the ball will land. Not really a big overhead small forward like Elliott, Bartel & Lincoln McCarthy
I will always rate Derm very highly. Even back then a 186cm target CHF was extremely short. He was not a Langford. He was a Carey. Big difference.

Very good win, not often we win by that margin. But Dees are seriously in big trouble and don’t think it’s an easy turnaround. Looking like a top 5 pick incoming

Me too. Came in at start of 3rd Q just when Melb got its run on. Decided I'd rather see the good part of the game than the bit where we get run down so put it on to replay from start. Then fell asleep in second Q. Woke to find we'd won.

Best win I've never seen because the bits I did see of the 3rd Q were very ordinary.

Sure but all I’m saying is that 194 is the new 186
Yeah to be fair I didn’t word that very well. I was backing up your statement that he played like a tall despite being short.

To give a better comparison to today, it would be like Langford at 191cm being your imposing target CHF today, impacting in big games with contested marks and kicking 6 goals or more semi-regularly. There’s no comparison to Brereton in today’s game.

Melbourne definitely made us look better but you can only play against who is front of you. I've been a big critic of Bryan but I felt like his influence was missed when he went off the ground. He is quite agile and had some good possessions, hopefully he will be back soon. Really stoked that Mckay had a good game the backline is starting to hold some structure now and moving forward I wouldn't expect many changes to it. Shiel through the middle was massive the first half and Menzies showed some real hunger for the ball. You could tell he was on and he wanted every opportunity he could get.

The usual suspects all firing... Merrett, Durham, Martin etc But seeing the more fringe/maligned players stepping up and having a good game was great to see.

Having thought about it I reckon that Jesse Hogan (who isn’t a CHF) is the only imposing ‘short tall’ we have. But even so he is about the same height as the other top 2 CHFs of Brereton’s era, Kernahan and Merrett.

Then you have Curnow at 192 cm who plays a CHF type role at times but relies on his athleticism.

If you combined Curnow’s height and Hogan’s presence you’d have Brereton at his peak.
