When Scott said Parish just needed some time to find form after injury kept him out and that he'd get better as the year went on I scoffed, but he may have been onto something there. Gotta back it up though.
Yep. 'Form' can't be a one week thing.

I don't think we can take a huge amount from this game. It looked like the dees showed up expecting to be handed the 4 points and were not prepared for a side that showed a modicum of intent.

The win is good, it really helps out the coach and will give the players some confidence but I'm not expecting us to receive the same sort of latitude next week.

Was it the real Don Burke or the Matty Johns parody?🤣🤣
I wasn’t even aware of the matty johns parody 🤣

The real Don went apeshit because my friend addressed him as “Don” not “Mr Burke”

So you mean like it'd be for every young team?

Every such teams needs wins like this to gain some confidence in a direction and some tangible reward for effort, but they aren't going to win every week and will still have their blowouts.

However it's clear in hindsight that since we were toe to toe with Norf and were able to pull it back V the Dogs that this wasn't a "flash of the moment" win, it was a win that we were building momentum towards for a few weeks now off the back of effort/desire and working on things.

Also more context, people were saying stuff like they couldn't see where our next win was going to come from, that we'd go winless till Richmond or all year. Nipping that BS in the bud now, including the dumbass streak people kept bringing up which was clearly influenced by injuries, eases some pressure off the back of the young players to keep developing.

But of course trust you to come in trying to be the "calm head" of it all, you're not, IMO you just sound negative af and out of touch. Consider context.

True to some extent, but we exceeded expectations last week too and we are getting players back from injury. Nice to have something to smile about

Have to say it again but slowing down the attack from all out go to a more tempo and go when you can really made a difference. It was almost like they had taken a step too far and the mentality of flat-out attack was leading to players making poor decisions and pushing the envelope too far. By bringing it back by 30%-40% it eliminated a lot of the dumb handball errors and also allowed us to defend the ground better as we were in a better position to transition.
100%

The test will be that a lot of teams won’t allow that level of uncontested marks

It worked so well yesterday because it’s the opposite of what Melbourne wanted and were expecting

Really we need to see if, with some of our new talent, we are finally going to get better at precision kicking our way through opposition when required. Which also requires enough contested marking forward of the ball.

I believe the signs are good but it will take a good while before we can do it week in week out

i vaguely remember hearing this stuff about Burke years ago. There is a thread about people meeting players and Gary Lyon cops a lot of heat. Loved the story about him ignoring a fan at training for an autograph and Todd Viney walked up signed the jumper and said to the guy "don't worry he (Lyon) is just a w***er".

Yep, heard quite a few about Lyon too

One thing I noticed with 2MP, when he rolled into the backline to support in this game, he could go for his marks without the constant arm chops. Watching back, nearly everything he clunked one grab, which is the opposite of when he plays forward. I suspect he doesn't get the free kicks he's entitled to up forward, mainly because he doesn't make a fuss about it. For interest, watch his elbow position when he reached above his head, he's got a narrow gate between his arms which makes him easier to get swept in the contest.

If he was a foot taller and wore a footscray jumper, he'd get more frees...
A few years ago vs Port, Allir Allir was holding his wrist going into contests with no free called.

Geez isn’t Ridley important. Another reliable kick back there just settled us so much. So often we’ve seen us panic when trying to retain possession and he just sent a calm across the whole group.

noticed this for years. His arms gets chopped constantly.
agreed. I don't know if it'd do any good, but it's almost a situation where you put together a little a highlights package of what isn't paid to him vs what else gets paid each week, and send it to the AFL on the sly with a 'please explain the ongoing discrepancy'. Make it be something the umpires have in the back of their minds at each contest.

HOW flipping GOOD IS FOOTY!!!

Reckon that is the best game i have seen us play in a long long time and it wasn't won off one persons performance it felt like it was a structurally won game with an actual game plan set in place

Parish ill eat my words you played well but you gotta back that up

Are we going to run the Bombers player of the year voting this year?
With everything else going on I'm thinking this has been missed.

However, this thread does not need to be set up by a mod. You or any poster are welcome to set it up after a game.

I just figured out early form was so dispiriting, no one really wanted to vote. And frankly, no one really deserved votes

A lot of talk in the media about the '17 losses in a row' and 'the unwanted record' etc. Scott said his presser that he didn't mention it once. Absolutely zero evidence to support this but I like to think that the group did pay attention to that and took it as a matter of pride not to be the team that broke that loss streak record.

I like how they paid attention this week because 18 would be terrible but the build up as they got to 17 wasn’t really on their mind in previous weeks

i'd believe it tbh, there's probably not a lot of people in our camp who're paying attention to the AFL media currently.
