Incredible game of footy.

Two evenly matched midfield. Pendles was awesome to watch.
Joey Vs Moore was such an exciting duel.
Our backline was huge, Saad/Hooker/Hurley in particular.
Had defence and attack in equal parts, and showed that attacking footy is not all about the goals that are scored.

That game will do so much for our players. It reinforces what we are doing. It gives us experience under finals like pressure in front of finals like crowd.
The youngsters especially, Rids, Guelfi, Mcgrath, Redman looked a little overawed under the pressure, it's good to put them in that situation.

McGrath will benefit a bit in particular, he looked a bit overawed I feel went back to immediately looking to handball, though alot of the players did.

I actually don't care about the result, it was just such a fun game. Maybe game of the year, at least that I've seen.

I can kind of accept most of the bad umpiring. Normally the team that's getting the ball into the 50 quickly will be the beneficiary of umpiring mistakes but that Tippa high contact free oh boy, that was an absolute stinker.
Mentioned this one on our board , so many obvious frees not been paid , the other was Cox holding an Essendon player off the ball with his back to the incoming ball.
players throwing the ball with one hand , kicking in danger on wednesday night. it changes the flow of the game when frees are unpaid or simply infringements are ignored by the umps.

Then you get players getting tackled and lose the ball , and they get the free, holding the man, how is that not incorrect disposal if he has had prior.
Only encourages the rolling maul.
Its Collingwoods turn this year for the umps to get them out of the shit when required.
Was a good game if you where able to not let the bad umpiring get to you.

I was hoping your team was going to win, you guys are real supporters, gees half of Collingwood supporters are Johnny come lately fashion scum .
Oh its so naughty to be a Pie supporter, bloody want a be crims.

Sorry still getting over last Thursday.
Good luck , get em next time.

Who was the guy with the good mail? You know, when his flatmates, brothers, sister-in-law's cousin overheard the guy cleaning his windscreen and how he heard from the guy at the pub who works with Nathan Buckley's cousin .....
Cant remember.

The only other callers I can remember are Ivan from Ivanhoe and Peter from Peterborough.

Isnt it the edges that basically cost is the game?
Not really. Shiel, Merrit, Daniher and Heppell where all in our best players but had critical turnovers at various stages.
Also the fact that Myers, Smith , Parish, McGrath and Geulfi proved to be a bit short of the level of Collingwoods midfield is not a tinkering at the edges issue. It is simply the level they are at. The fact we played Ambrose or Bagually who have been in the gun did not cost us the game. The fact we are two midfielders short to play at just under or at the level Shiel and Merrett at a consistent level was the issue. We did not get quite enough from Mcgrath Smith , Zaharakis, Parish , Guelfi or Myers on the day for whatever reason.

Now you've started it.

He was great too.

Favourite Massive moment was post Ess vs St Kilda on a Friday night in 2000. Docklands had only just opened and we'd belted the Saints.

Massive: Gee they were good last night.

Tony: they were pretty good.

Massive: they were really good, Tone

Tony (something like): Well the Bombers are a great team.

Massive: Essendon?! Naah Tone, the nachos (at Docklands)! The nachos mate!
Ha ha!!
What about the hot fat roll!

When do Myers or Zaharakis ever give us anything against good opposition?

All of our losses have come from our best players not playing well. The edges will always be there, and you can obviously argue a teams bottom 6 players are what makes a team, but yesterday our difference was Shiel. And look at Heppell’s first quarter. Terrible.

Your favourite edge baguley kept us in touch by taking his opportunities, regardless of how they came about.

Yesterday may have been the first real impact of not having runners for us.

Once Daniher kicked the final goal of the game there was still 5+ minutes to go, yet we played as if there was 30 seconds to go and took some unnecessary risks.

Collingwood's composure was the main difference and their leaders (especially Pendles) really stood up

We had 87 turnovers to 78. As much as you want to blame umps, even 5 less turnovers could mean 5 more shots on goal to us and 5 less to Collingwood.

That's how you win close games.

We just arent experienced enough in front of big crowds. Losing a close one on ANZAC day is probably the best way to learn if you want to be better under pressure in September.

I know what you are saying. Not even sure what role Zaharakis played yesterday. Had a lot of time at half back or very wide on the wing and did not really get into the game a lot.
It is the reason why I keep saying we are two class midfielders short.

The game reminded me a lot of the GF. Collingwood got the jump, the opposition came back late in the 2nd quarter and then controlled all of the play for the 2nd half. Despite the control of the play, they couldn't put it on the board because Collingwood could afford to put defence ahead of attack due to their big lead. The difference is Sheed to his chance, we blew three in the last 5 min.
I agree. It did have that feel about it and I think it’s one of the reasons that I don’t think the pies win it this year- they do have a tendency to let sides back in. On a different day the result might have been much different.

My side won the game you’re referring to, so I have a really good opinion of the GF, but prior to the sheed goal I was really proud of the resilience in the group to come back when the chips were down. It’s a mark of a good side, which I am convinced you are now.

Agree with all but wanted to reply to the highlight - McGrath and Shiel, both.

umpire question.

outside of the holding the ball rule which is terminally ruined..

I mean you tackle correctly, the ball is now allowed to spill free - then you get done for holding the man - it just boggles

I want to know about blocking - I semi get that you cant stiff arm in the ruck, but in general play...

Hooker got done for blocking cox - in a one on one marking dual... in which he took the mark, we all know its wrong but we wear it

Top of the goal square, The very same cox, with back to play and arms around his opponent sets a block for a teammate... ball hasn't even reached the 50,

isn't the rule no blocking more than 5 m away from the ball? (if at all, going off hooker)

can anyone enlighten me on why cox was able to do that with back to the ball?

I think the problem with HTB is that the game is already so overumpired that if every free that was there was paid wed have the 50 free kick debacle of the Melbourne game every time.

Its the strangest and most un-spirit of the game thing to let go but it has to be that way, particularly due to congestion.

I'm not really bothered by high contact. Players bring not getting frees on themselves but exaggerating contact, dropping knees, etc. It can be too hard to tell during games.

I'm not sure why we ever pay a push when a tackler comes from behind.

Watching as a neutral, not paying attention to the commentary, it really seemed like the umpires were instructed to not pay anything bar the completely obvious frees.. which is ok in theory, but in a match like today where every possession is hard earnt, clear missed frees that would be paid really hurt you guys in the end. Commiserations.

Really impressed by you guys though, held up the pies after they got the jump and with some cleaner kicking you might have snatched it at the end. I wouldn’t blame Shiel for a late shanked kick as much when he’s kicking that ball on tired legs. A few other kicks weren’t his best today, but part of that I think comes with new teammates. Learning what spots forwards run to and their running patterns does take some time. He did a mountain of work today, kept you guys in it early and really helped turn the momentum back at the end.

Curious also, I’ve noticed Heppell was often the guy who got the ball at the end of a handball chain, and he would just kick it high and long down the line without any real general direction. Often they would get turned over. Is that a coaching direction or just his decision making with ball in hand to just pump it down the line rather than look for the lead up?

Also, really good to see Daniher up and about again. Footy is better when he’s playing well. He’s one of my favourites to watch.

Fully expect you guys to be there at the pointy end; wish you all the best for the rest of the year.
If they were instructed to only pay obvious frees then **** be purple because they missed a fair few of them...

the thing that irritates me is Collingwood people saying we got 2 goals from dodgy frees, but the ones we whinge about are the ones in the back half...

its not about the goal, its about the momentum, we are a team that runs on momentum, especially from the back, we get it and go, when those frees are missed it allows Collingwood to stop and reset the ground, we lose our advantage.
