AFL Toast RND 9: Win Against the Swans

is this being a young team in the second half?

That first half was some of the best football ive seen us play for some time.. Defensively anyway
I do not think it is about being young as far as the skill execution goes. Merrett. Durham. Caldwell. Langford all have had issues with basic skills at times. It was more the skills I was talking about.

As far as defense goes yes the young blokes feeling the pressure was a factor which is the side effect of having a forward line with a number of first and second year players in it. In general we have been better defensively. In the end we went a bit too defensive in the last quarter and could not run the footy. Too many numbers back. It was a big ask to kick long to Caddy or Day-Wicks in one on two situations.Even when Wright was forward he had to fight two or three of them.

As bad as it was at times the exposure the young guys are getting is a good thing. It is much better than being in a side of witches hats that gets belted by 50 plus every third week. Sure we will lose more games and on of the top sides may well give us a touch up again but they are learning how to keep up the fight. The overall efforts of Caddy where sensational. He never gives in.

Where were Brisbane on the ladder this time last year? What about Essendon this time last year? What about hawthorn?

We are beating these teams with a younger age demographic, and for the most part the youngins are the ones leading the way.

We have many season ending injuries and our young team will tire and fall away, but personally I love watching us win.

The North method you keep advocating for doesn’t work. Giving young guys token games and trying to have honourable losses has not worked for them, even to the point where they changed approach and had to trade for experienced players.
I haven't advocated for the North method at all.

What's more sobering is we've beaten 13th, 14th, 15th, 17th and 18th.
Can we instead say amongst our wins we've taken down a prelim finalist and grand finalist from last season? Context can gtfo

Their list build is shit.

No idea if you follow NFL but look at what the Cleveland Browns did this year by trading down and building a **** load of draft currency. Gave up getting the best player in the draft (can play WR on offense and CB on defense) for a massive haul which got them pretty much an A-A+ draft rating this year and they're loaded for next years draft.

The fact that North have done **** all to boost their defense over the last 3-4 is a ****ing joke, and they wonder why they give up 100 points every game even with a master coach.

Taking both McKercher at 2 and Duursma at 4 in 2023 instead of trading one of the picks down to target Curtain or O'Sullivan is malpractice from their recruiters.

Imagine they trade 4 to Geelong for their pick + next years first, get O'Sullivan after they make the trade with us to get a second rounder, than at pick 20 in last years draft they take Whitlock instead of giving up pick 2 in the 2025 draft. (Or they take Trainor and still do that stupid trade with Richmond)

O'Sullivan, Mannagh (who geelong got with our second rounder), Whitlock & Pick 2 > Duursma & Whitlock.

You seem disappointed in Essendon finishing as high as possible, and playing whom the coaches perceive as the best team.

Explain how your rebuilding method is different to how north have done it.

One of the youngest teams fielded most weeks and winning games is nothing to scoff at, especially for players looking to join a club on the rise.

Don’t follow nfl, but the top picks of the afl draft are usually mids, hybrid mids or key forwards.

Because North went scorched earth and played only kids, moving on the veterans regardless of their contribution.

I've never said that. The only kid you could possibly argue I've advocated for getting token games is Vigo.

Shiel was average and missed a few tackles he should be making. Drop him for someone who has some good form in the VFL imo, not sure who that could be?

For sure - if that’s your criticism, I’m assuming you’re advocating to bring someone in who could stick those tackles..?

I may have confused you with other posters, sorry if that’s the case.

I truly believe in what’s happening at Essendon at the moment. These wins aren’t going to amount to finals this season, but they could add to a culture that pushes for a premiership in future seasons.

Langford been worse than Shiel, don’t see many calling for him to go.

Shiel played as the sub, and just come off an injury. Was very good prior to injury.

We are getting pretty close to "we need to talk about kyle" territory, since the mid point of last year he has been just going and I don't think we shouldve rushed him back into the seniors after his injury.
I dont think Scott will do it but I would like to see a forward line with only wright and caddy as the talls and bring in another small for Langford.

I would've played more kids 100%. And I dont want us finishing in that 8th - 13th band for the umpteenth time (15/20 times since we last won a final) because it is the middle of nowhere.

But I'll never be disappointed that we win, what I will be disappointed about if whilst we're beating the bottom 6 we keep getting brushed aside by the top teams.

Which is why this Bulldogs game is huge imo. We push them and maybe the group starts believing they've turned the corner, we get pushed aside again and it feels very same old.

Second half was complete garbage and Sydney really blew a lot of opportunities, but we’ve ended up on the wrong side of it against Sydney far too many times for me to care. Win is a win.

Reid continues to amaze me.

But my god can we have a ****ing break with these injuries?

Agree on Langford. Seems like he's carrying something. Repeatedly saw him slow jogging to what should've been genuine 1 on 1 contests last night with swans getting easy ball as a result. Wright in the forward line with Langford as he is, makes our forward pressure terrible even with kako and caddy trying to make up for it.

Think we also need to talk about our game plan when we're up by a considerable margin. Almost every single kick in/rebound from D50 is a lateral kick from the goal square to the pocket and long up the line. Was sitting behind goals at the game and saw players not even looking at the corridor when there was an open player giving a solid lead, only to kick it down the line for a swans rebound.

Without knowing why, I suspect Scott is trying to limit the risk of corridor turnovers leading to oppo goals, but if we do the same thing EVERY TIME, we get predictable and our defensive rebounds are very easy to shut down.

You can have all the picks in the world but if you can't identify and develop talent its meaningless.

Browns got a haul in 2011 from the Falcons too and where did that get them?

NFL it’s Quarterbacks, O line and D line with the odd WR and D back.

Yeah god forbid we rack up a big score and boost the percentage
