Love this pick. We got him so that he could play this year and give us more midfield depth as we look to managing Pendles and Sidey, also plays as a small forward so potentially provides cover for our small forwards.

I don't think Jen is claiming to have any inside word on this matter, she's just taking the reporting as being accurate.

Unless we get the unlikely situation that the club discloses whether we would or wouldn't have selected May if available we'll never truly know.

Given the noise around us being interested and the fact he's a mad Collingwood supporter I find it difficult to believe we would have used him as a distraction and for the purpose of increasing our chances to obtain Howes.

I don't think we'd be that cruel and play with the emotions of a kid we never intended on selecting. I could be wrong.

So for mine either the noise was wrong or grossly exaggerated or it was correct and Howes was our 2nd option.

Given we waited until our 2nd selection to take him it would suggest we were confident he'd still be available and wasn't our No.1 priority of those still available which ended up being Steele.

Again though that's just a guess like everyone else.

That’s assuming the noise about us and May came from the club. Could equally have come from Dermie trying to ratchet up interest. Who knows?

I think the interest would have been real. I think the way to play the MSD is with a short list of blokes you'd like to add longer term and if they're not available it's a bit of a no-brainer, no-risk to add blokes who already know the system from your VFL team for some extra depth for the rest of the year - with no committment beyond that.
