You don't know everything

This was being reported industry wide

This wasn't a case of Jen having inside info

Sounds like someone leaked our interest in him. Probably Derm being dumb enough to tell his Fox Footy colleagues out of excitement lol

I don't think it would of made much of a difference if the media leaked our interest in May, Essendon had his name on their board and they selected him cause he was available, not because in spite of us, that's more of a Carlton thing to do.

Lets get around Roan, looks like a strong lad, we can rescue May from Essendon and Brad Scott later.

Looking at this... you can see the MSD is on the TV. And he's already got a Pies guernsey on - I wonder if the May stuff was a slight misdirect from the club? Like we were always going to take Steele at pick 8.
Probably committed to him at one of our picks. If May was there at 8 and our interest was genuine then take Steele at 15.

I like the pick. This is the Temu of drafts so you’re looking at highly speculative types. For me ground level types with run, skill and positional flexibility offer the best chance of success. I’d compare it to the Richards/ Noble selections and body size will be the query in relation to earning a call up this year.

An AFL clubs recruiting/ list management department is a $1m+ pa investment. They picked two KPF’s on the night so it’s pretty clear to me they saw it as an area of need and if you’re scouting state leagues with that level of resources May would have stood out look a sore thumb. To even think our interest, or Derm running his mouth, had anything to do with it would be mad.

Counterpoint: it's really funny to think Essendon are that much of a rabble

Nah it was us. Everyone knows this is the case.
We hoped its how we could get him, but it got leaked our interest.
Essendon interviewed him before the draft so he was in the mix for them aswell, just because Jon Ralph's narrative is Collingwood missed out and he's the one the got away doesn't make it so.

Good luck Roan! Looking forward to tracking his progress in the black and white!
Also being from Frankston and having the last name Steele has some irony about it 😆

A bit like someone with Essendon and KPD, who even tried to use the speculative reporting as a gloat ...
I was too focused on the idea that Carlton wouldn't draft a small forward despite the fact they needed one that I neglected that Essendon would be too stupid to realise that they literally have zero healthy key defenders and drafted 2 key forwards, a ruck and a small forward instead.

THey've got a deep group of KPD on their list - not a longer term need. It's the most important systematic and structural posiiton - you couldn't expect someone new to the club to come in and not stuff up the structure. And they've got 3 solid ones due back in the next month. Unless they had a good one in the VFL program who already knew the system and could be expected to be in the right spots straight away, there was never a good reason for them to go kpd. Media just can't see past the next week so looked at the very short term - with that very short term being an unrealistic expectation for a newby to perform. It was a perfectly rational decision by the Dons.

This is the new version of the unvanquishable 'the Bulldogs only drafted Bont because we were linked to him in the media' urban legend.

Logic cannot beat it.

Reckon Port took the key defender they may have been after?
I was focused on North.. there was talk that blues wanted a small. I didn't think Essendon would take a forward with the first pick, like surely a defender.. and they got none lol

Yeah, possibly, but that means they had a short list if there was only one guy on it. Gold Coast took Oscar Adams with the pick after Essendon's so he was on the table. They evidently just didn't think it was worth taking one. Had to take Liam McMahon instead.

Relying on McKay, Ridley, Reid and Hayes being healthy seems like a pretty risky strategy.
Relying on a mid season draft kpd before they've learnt the system structure and game plan is lower percentage. Throwing a forward back when necessary is as likely to work.

They're stuffed this year anyway. They had to take a ruck because you don't want to be throwing kpps into a long stint of games in the ruck and stoppage to stoppage is a much easier pattern, but otherwise best available was the way to go for them.

YepDidn't they mention on the draft telecast tonight that a lot of players (if not most) are advised not to play the week before draft...? I'm sure Nat Edwards said that.
Yep, their managers tell them to sit out because potential doing a serious injury the game before Wednesday isn't smart.
