Yeah, felt for him. He was physically upset when he got subbed. Tears in his eyes.

I know he isn't up to it but was a tough watch.

AFL app says he was subbed as injured.
Sonsie was positioned on the defensive side of the members’ wing and had two clear options: either push forward into a contested situation or look inboard, where we had two free players inside the square. He chose the contested option, and at that moment, I knew it wouldn’t work. You simply can’t afford to make such clearly poor decisions and expect to hold your spot, especially when there's so many gifted kids coming through. Unfortunately, the kid’s confidence just isn’t there right now, and it’s starting to impact his overall performance.

Aside from having spent the last couple of hours cleaning out my eyes after watching that absolutely horrific game of footy, happy we got the win.

Positives
1st quarter ball movement
They found a way to win
Taj Hotton debut goal and pretty much anytime he got near the footy
Back line (apart from that second and third quarter)
Tigga (legend)
Short found form
Jonty sealer
Ross shutdown role on Merrett
Geelong lost

Negatives (phew here we go)
1st quarter final pass execution inside 50
General conversion (again)
Lack of movement in the forward line when we have taken a mark ~70m from goal. No meaningful leads, everyone for the most part standing still. Yze, I beg you, this needs to change ASAP
Dumb footy (again)
Hotton only 56% game time
Unwillingness to change up the midfield mix (again) - just give us a different look PLEASE

Everything about the second quarter
- the gameplan or lack thereof (especially considering we were actually moving the ball well in Q1)
- Overpossessing the footy in the backline
- Inability to move the footy with any efficiency or effectiveness
- unwillingness to take the game on (we aren't making finals lads, you can try and hit the diagonal kick into the centre to a player who was completely by themselves)
- Missing the most simple targets
- Fumbling all the time (again)

Third quarter
- copy paste everything I said about the 2nd quarter just less egregious

Ultimately, there's still a lot of foundational stuff we are continually getting wrong. Regardless of how young/inexperienced we are, we shouldn't be playing THAT poorly.
This year is the time to try different things but yet we persist with the same midfield mix all game. I just don't get it. I'm not asking to change it all, just one or two players getting centre bounce exposure every now and then.

I just want to touch on the ball movement stuff quickly and the frustrations of it.

After quarter time when we had been moving it coast to coast really nicely and frequently, Essendon made some changes and set up 2-3 loose behind the ball.

That’s why we had to keep pausing on fast breaks and go sideways.

Wouldn’t have minded manning them up at some point but it was aiding our defence at times too.

Bombers have a makeshift backline currently and it felt that was their way to clog it and stop our run.

I get that but there were opportunities for us to hit a diagonal in the corridor on multiple occasions or even switch the play to move/disrupt their zone.
If all it takes is teams clogging up the backline to completely stifle our ball movement then that's an issue as we clearly had issues utilising the extra numbers we had in the backline and through the middle.

I get that and don’t disagree.

That’s where the evolution of the plan needs to happen next year.

Be more confident and daring to take on different kicks and ways forward.

I get what your saying, but it sounds like it takes only the most basic of strategic moves to complete destroy our gameplan. I get that might chance as the players get better, but for now its creating a horrendous style of play & I have to be honest that - as much as people might say "defense wins championships", i have always felt "strong offense makes champions" - meaning, more aggressive/attacking styles of play tends to develop young premium players, better, faster etc.

Yze has coached about 40 games by now & is yet to have the side hit 100 points. Infact, they have only cracked the 90's twice & both times we lost by about 5 goals and the oppo took their foot off the pedal in the last 15 that got us 3 goals late.

Its just not a sustainable reality to have your team not cracking 100pts over 2 seasons and having >10 games they are even scoring 80+. We drafted Lalor, Smillie, Hutto, Armstrong, Faull, Simms - all blokes who appear to rely on "attacking footy" to be their most damaging.

Cadman only 21 and kicking bags of 6 against the pussies though… gives a nice reality check about how far our emerging forwards are
Not the best comparison. Cadman is in his 3rd year and was a number #1 pick. Has already notched up 50+ games too. Playing in a good side, he kicked 6 goals in his debut season. Jonty has also kicked 6 in a shit side.

Anyone ever told you that Essendon have won more than Richmond?
Anyone tell you they had 2 or 3 before we joined the afl … and some bullcrap rule where we won the final but a team were allowed to challenge us and we lost that flag in the 20ies ( CFL at it again 😂) . We have won more flags than them in the last 100 years … last 60 years … last 10 years 😂

Who gives a crap about how many flags they have … I care about the now

They are a rabble … I’m calling it that we have gone pass them in year one of a rebuild …

We have 4 first rounders that did not play …I can not see 1 A grader in their youngsters

That list has no hope of a flag in the next 10 years

If we are lucky enough with injuries to our crop from last year and gibcus.. Clarke come good , plus our pick this year … we at least have a chance

Enjoy the win 👍

How do you explain our latest 3 premierships when we changed our game into a defensive one all over the ground?

Haven't read the thread so apologies if it's already been posted. Who was the last team to win a match after going 2 quarters without kicking a goal. Half the bloody match!

Has that ever been done?

Thoughts on the game...

* Hotton looks exciting

* Happy to get the win in Vlaus' 250th. A bloody 3 time RFC Champion! Legend !

* Happy just to get any win.

*Essendon have had a mare a of year. Bit like us last year without draft capital or recent success. Had a disastrous injury run this year. Was one of the few teams I thought pre season could finish below us (with some injuries). I'm stoke with what we have done so far this year.

4 wins in the first year of a hard rebuild looks alright to me. We were meant to not win a single game.

We will get better.

We might even manage another win....

...Or not. See how it goes riding this rollercoaster.

Happy that Taj got a win first up! Looks like a player straight up!

Cadman has only really started making a meaningful impact this year though. I've been following him closely as I wanted us to eventually recruit him before we drafted the way we did last year.
I think Jonty is doing as well as he possibly can in the circumstances.
