Heaven help us if Garthwaite is the go-to. Outstanding VFL player but far too slow at AFL level. Monstered four times in seven matches last year. To be fair, they were in nightmare games for us but he single-handedly cost us the Adelaide game pre-bye and was woeful against GWS, Geelong and North.
Can't be any slower than Astbury and would run rings around Ben McEvoy who is probably close to AA FB form so far.

Had practically zero pre season last year, give him a break.

Bizarre year of footy with all the chopping and changing.
Cotch says some players might not go to interstate hubs owing to family duties.
Anyway, hope they play Balta as an extra HBF like I wrote before.
Maybe even write a line through the season, now we have districts in lockdown again.

It is a huge downgrade on Astbury. Astbury is one of the best marks in our team. Excellent reader of the player and sets up so well behind the ball. Garthwaite is a lockdown defender and based on what we've seen at AFL level, and we can only judge it from what we've seen - an average one at that. Garth is still young and developing but right now he's nowhere near ready to take on the elite forwards of the competition.

Blessing in disguise. 2020 season is cooked or irrelevant, and getting games into KPDs whoever they are is really important, especially in place of Astbury who is 30 before next season starts. Succession planning starts with assessing who we have on the list already. Dave is great, but he's not the future.

Be interesting to see who we go with. The way our team is getting smashed it won't matter. I'd be tempted to play Riewoldt as KPB. I think he'd rise to the challenge. And play an inexperienced KPF. Cj, Chol, Balta. If we just replace DA, then Balta.

Jack Graham

"He was pretty good. We know his work rate and pressure are his biggest strengths and he had 11 tackles for the game which was phenomenal. He won a lot of the ball, it was great to see him come back and play in the midfield the whole game and show us how he plays his footy.

Marlion Pickett

"Played midfield the whole game and had a high impact around the ball. He had nine tackles which was pleasing. He played a pretty good game, he was able to get after the ball and be around contests, and he was also able to transition from contest to contest."

Love how these campaigners lay 11 and 9 tackles in a scratch match but didn't want to break a nail against the Hawks. WTF is wrong with us this year.

After listening to the injury report, Burge reckons Dave will be out for around 5 weeks...damn!
Caddy should ok...
Dusty pulled up ok

therefore my changes

Out Dave IN Garth
Out Ross IN Pickett

Id like Chol to come in after some good form in scratch matches (5 goals last game)
Naishy deserves a go as well...we need speed (maybe for KMac)

cant see us making 4 changes though

We had plenty out last year for long stretches, the media seem to forget that, selective memory.

agree..early in 2019 media were rejoicing saying our season was gone
rance out, Cotch, Dusty, Jack ...then came the port game when our kids well and truly smashed it
Got out the fairy bread and red cordial when Rance was injured.

I think you're under estimating him. I reckon he'd be playing every if we didn't have one of the best defenses in the comp for the last 3 years.
He turned 22 today actually. If he's not ready this year, he never will be. Grimes wasn't more than a lock down defender for the first half of his career.

Marking was a key strength of Garthwaite as a junior. Just needs the confidence to do it in the seniors. Now is his chance.

Was hoping Aarts might get a role too.
Aarts and Balta.
Rough up a few of the Dees.
Maybe put Aartsy on Brayshaw.
Nothing to lose, everything to gain.

I’ve got no confidence of the season being completed but I wouldn’t give up on it at this stage.
Could be a Steven Bradbury scenario where everyone is falling over close to the finishing line.
Even a top 8 position might do if we are peaking 5 weeks out.

Even if it does get to the end, I'm doubtful, it won't mean much anyway. It's a joke of a year.
Develop players for the future, let's get games into the future.

Luckily Melbourne don't have any elite forwards.

I'd play Garth on T.McDonald this week. If he can't do that job then he is truly not AFL standard and we bring Balta in.

Geez do we actually want to play? Cotch giving reasons why we won’t go to hubs versus other teams that just say they are happy to go- if you are not wanting to have a crack then don’t give it to those that do
Would be soft not too play.

Lucky he is a two time premiership captain and probably our best player this year so far.

I don’t get all the talk about the season meaning less, or being meaningless. You are still competing with the same 17 other clubs, just not in the same circumstances.

If the season completes the team who wins it is the premier team for this year under the terms of the season, which do not exclude anyone from winning it.

So far we don’t seem to have adapted as well as other teams to the changes, but there is a long way to go.

If the premier was decided on coin tosses or something then you have an argument, but they are playing footy to ultimately decide the premier team and more or less everyone is labouring under the same stresses, we are just not doing it very well at the moment.
