Na we didn't choose Gray over him. We chose to pass.

We had four spots available at the time. I couldn't understand why we didn't use all four — even on six month contracts like the Bombers have done this year. Gave us the perfect opportunity to trial players to see if they were worthy of a list spot, and we didn't take it.
Let’s not re-write history. At the time of the MSD, Davidson had played 1 x good game and the rest were just average - certainly nothing to scream ‘pick me, pick me’ in the MSD … it’s why no club picked him, not just Richmond. He really hit form AFTER the mid-season draft.

People just assume his 2024 form was across the entire season and we ignored it. It wasn’t. Check the VFL stats and the date of the MSD and see how his overall form pre-MSD stacked up.

As I said … no club picked him, not just us. There’s a reason.

We going to spend 5 years on the bottom if we keep running Hopper, Taranto, Prestia, KMac/Ross midfields.

With the 2024 crop we will be like GWS on steroids with 22 first rounders in the side and some poor rookie campaigner as sub (on debut of course)
OMFG … most of our future midfield is already on the list. They are just injured…. Lalor, Smillie, Hotton and McCauliffe. Then at least 1 x top-5 pick from 2025 draft. And maybe Kellaway. And then another top-5 pick from 2026 draft and/or a free agent.

Why people keep banging on about our current midfield like we haven’t addressed it does my head in.

2 of those guys haven't even played, 1 coming off ACL and the other injured over and over. The 3rd had 2 serious hammy injuries and the 4th is a 3rd round pick who is always injured.

History is littered with top picks that don't make it or don't reach the heights they project for any number of reasons particularly injury.

I'm not rewriting history. I remember at the time are lot of us here were bemused that we didn't use the third pick on Davidson (or anyone at all for that matter).

It's very cool that you've assembled an elite midfield in your head out of players who barely have a centre bounce attendance between them.

but more likely we're not going to have a 100% strike rate especially as we've gone close to 0% from 2018-2024. once you take into account injuries and kids who fail to develop (Smillie looks high-risk to me, McCauliffe mostly looks good because we're comparing him to Dow, TT and Hopper) it's really not looking great. Also TT and Hopper were meant to 'protect' the kids, but they've mostly displaced them so far and I shudder to think how slow they'll be when we're developing our 2026 draftees. It's a mess.

We are trying to build a Premiership team of the future … we are not trying to win the flag from 2025-2027.

I think the best way to do this is keep developing players in the positions they are best suited and we see their future. This might mean we don’t put a huge variety of players through the midfield right now, but there’s no point if that’s not where their future lies.

I already know Lalor and McCauliffe will be best-22 mids into the future. Sure, maybe Smillie and Hotton will both be busts - but I don’t think that’s the starting point of your list management strategy.

Our coaching decisions and positional moves right now will be based on our midfield in mid-2026 comprising:

Lalor
Smillie
McCauliffe
Hotton
Taranto
Hopper
Prestia
Sharp (or equivalent top-5 pick)

(Dow, Ross, Campbell, MRJ if break glass is needed)

The remainder of this season for me will be a huge success if by R24 every player is fit and ready to hit pre-season (except Clarke). The results are largely irrelevant as I’m already convinced at least 6 of our 8 x 2024 draft picks will be quality players, and potentially all of them.

Thought Ross went ok when shifted more on-ball late in the game. Played a much better game than he has the last couple of months. Fancy that, a mid playing well as a mid.
Yeah, who woulda thunk, huh?

Everyone knows no player is a certainty to make it.

However we have numerous top picks, and with 2 more likely midfielders to come this year, we will have a bounty of elite prospects for our midfield. And between McAullife, Lalor, Hotton, Smillie + the 2 top 5 picks, we should have our midfield completed, with the ability to trade in a free agent down the line.

This problem we have with Taranto/Hopper/Prestia being the main trio that occupy 80% midfield time will change once these guys all come in.

It's obviously "not looking good" as they have been injured. We have the potential players there.

And you are massively underselling Kane McAullife - 7th highest rated u21 midfielder in the competition (over 5 games played).

This will change extremely quick mate don't worry.

Once Lalor and McAullife come in.

McAullife been averaging 60% CBA.
Lalor been averaging 24% CBA, and will only increase now in the second half of the year.

We might see Hotton and Smillie also take up some minutes come 2-4 weeks time.

Next year with Sharp, Duursma, Greeves, Grlj etc, they'll get some exposure.

Nope, he was definitely showing signs and a lot of people were noticing - the overall theme was hey he may or may not be good enough, we have a spare slot why not give him a crack. Not unreasonable!

Go back and read the MSD thread! We'd seen enough to know.

Again, we pay our list managers to see the green shoots, and he was at our club. Blind Freddy can say 'pick that guy' once they have really broken out. You don't need to pay Blind Freddy.

And that doesn't even touch on the question of why we left a list spot empty for 6 months in our worst ever season.

Something is badly awry at the club.

Now the industry is featuring and taking the p out of us re. Doc

‘BOG at halftime, he was on their VFL list, don’t know how Richmond missed this guy’

This is going to get very annoying
Almost as annoying as the people who bring it up on here ad nauseam as if we can’t discuss anything else

Lefau needs to come in but not as a forward mid is his go hopper out
His size & weight not likely to allow him to play as a mid, but it would be great to see him in there....

surely taj comes in
Think they would want to see a handful of full games at vfl level first just to ensure he’s got full match fitness

Maybe the Essendon game or makes the trip to WA against the eagles

Do we think a spell up forward for Balta might take a bit of initial pressure off him to get him back into the game, that would then allow Blight in as well.

I'm in no hurry for Short to come back as i don't see where he fits at the moment with Banks and Brown.

KMac is only a break glass in case of emergency type.

Kaleb and Steely can rest, Faull or Sims can be rotated as well.

Alger a full game please.

Lefau might not be quite ready but assisting down forward wouldn't be worst if we can fit.

Sonsie might get one more before the stamp comes out.

If Trainor is sore even after the break, then rotate him as well.
