I really like Yze’s press conferences this year compared to last year.

He is straightforward, gives an honest assessment of the game, highlights only legitimate excuses, calls out what went wrong without directing it at specific players etc.

A far difference to him saying “oh effort was all there” after (what felt like) every loss last year. Instead, he speaks of what periods were good, and which ones weren’t good etc.

Gives me confidence in him and his ability to coach us
He was in a no-win scenario last year as the coach of a team in a difficult position he didn't cause. His improvement is his engagement with the media shows he’s gaining confidence as a coach. We might not like the media, but being an effective media communicator is an undeniable component of modern coaching.

Sidearse and pendles
Been waiting for them to drop off a cliff but they're like Benjamin Button.
umps massage them every post game and with a happy ending

Playing in 3 premiership teams takes a lot more out of you than playing in 3 wooden spoon teams.
We’ll just load up and go again …

That one quarter cost us 6 goals
4 goals directly from umpire involvement

at the start of the third qrt there was a free kick for a push in the back or something in the middle ( the start of the rot) … think the shanked kick went to picket … not sure …can someone do a gif of the decision… I had 1 to many and was to far away to see … but even if it was there it was wrong 😂

Looks like Collingwood are contenders again, same as the Cats. Nothing beats 3 flags but gee whizz we've had to bottom out a fair bit whilst some footy clubs seem to be able to regenerate pretty quickly.
I’ll give praise if either of them can win a flag with their strategy … but if they heck up and get no flags … and then we go past them … that will be so fkng sweeeeeeeeeeeet

AFL going to find themselves in a bind.

If they support teams that constantly top up and play finals , that goes against the model they want to promote, which is play finals go back down and then play finals again so it’s not always the same teams doing well.

However, if a team has success and if they drop down, rebuild and contends again, that will CONFIRM their structure is ‘good and correct’ for the competition.

So we might find the league will have no choice but to ‘ encourage ‘ the direction we have taken.

We might even have favourable free kicks differentials …

WE WILL BE BACK WITH AVENGENCE

No, it's not some kind of master plan. It is crazy that we bottomed out so hard. But it's our current response that I'm focusing on.

Given the realities we've won two games already and have hit the draft hard to recover.

No one can predict flags and just as you said no one could predict that we'd win the spoon either.

But be grateful man, if someone had said at the end of 2016 that we will be wooden spooners in 2024 we would have believed them. We wouldn't have believed we'd win 3 flags in 4 years.

Similarly, if in Round 5 we were told you're likely to lose to Melbourne in Round 7 we would have believed them. We weren't prepared to believe we'd beat the Suns in Round 6... let alone Carlton in Round 1!

The sky isn't falling.
And don’t forget the inordinate number of injuries we had to key players including Lynch and the ACLs and Dusty really never playing top level again after he had the spleen rib injury.

With us playing finals since 13 too 22 Cotch & Co played like an extra 1.5 seasons.
No wonder they fell off the cliff.

I’d like to think you’re correct and we start to get favourable umpiring but I won’t hold my breath.

Also as someone else mentioned, you can’t underestimate the affect Hardwick walking out on the Club might have had. Yes I know we got 3 flags while he was here but, for me personally, I thought the way he left was pretty shitty. He just gave up way too easily when the going got a bit tough. Selfish, I thought.

It was a pretty hard watch after half time. We lost all control at stoppage, and had some really poor turnovers on top of it.

Our mids got beaten but fought it out. Backs as usual did their best with the amount of entries. Forward line was still a mixed bag, lynch crashed packs and gave us some chances. Faull tried hard, and kept being physical, could have had atleast another goal.

Dow was good, much better ball use by foot than at any point I can remember.

Gray had some moments, but Balta needs to come straight in.

MRJ just has the worst hands of anyone from the Tiwi islands that I can remember.

Steely is starting to become more threatening.

We clearly need more speed around the ball and on the flanks.

Still need to hit the draft and use some of our huge warchest on a free agent.

Sims didn’t play VFL…is he injured?

There were some shocking umpiring decisions all night and the third quarter was really bad but our midfield from memory still broke even in clearances in the third. The problem was that the Melbourne mids started running forward and our mids couldn’t shut them down. Maybe it was because they knew the umpires would protect them against Richmond’s rebounding but more likely Pickett showed up the lack of a genuine quick midfielder in our side.

Adam Simpson pointed out that the dees game plan this year seems to be leverage Gawns height advantage to get ball forward of stoppage so dees can get out front stoppages.

My thoughts on the game:

1. We played quite well in the first half for a rebuilding team. Lost the game in the 3rd quarter with very bad umpring calls and Melbourne getting a run on. At the end of the day, we only lost by 20 points. Playing 3 games in 11 days did not help.

2. The umpiring in the 3rd quarter was atrocious and helped Melbourne build up momentum. This sowed the seed of doubt in our young players in that they would have started questioning what they were doing right/wrong and made them be more cautious approaching the contest rather than being aggressive. The free against Taranto was absolutely shocking.

I know some posters have said that our players should be professional and the bad calls should not have affected them, but you only need a slight drop of confidence for your performance to drop. The bad umpiring calls had the opposite effect on Melbourne in helping them build their confidence.

3. I was disappointed in the loss also. We will have ups and downs throughout the year. When looking at where we are at so far this season compared to where we thought we would be, we are in a much better position. Hell, the professionals thought that we would be winless this season.

4. We have been compared to North Melbourne and there is a fear that we will end up like them. In my opinion, we are never going to be like them. We have a good core of premiership players to guide our younger players. North cut all their senior players years ago and have had to bring in players such as Luke Parker to provide some on-field leadership.

5. When Max Gawn retires, Melbourne will be in a world of hurt.

If Lynch is out, we might have to throw Balta forward again :S

I don't like it, but I also don't like the idea of our kids being left without a big body up front.

Would allow Gray another week too, which he deserves.
Why would Lynch not play? (Scans were precautionary)
