And Grrr I agree there too, we definitely lack that ball carrying speedster off half back. I've got my eye on Juddy to try in that role.
That's a stretch, but you never know. Was hoping that Smith might come through, playing well in the VFL, but not easy to get a gig in our back half.

The more I think about it the more the idea of allowing Brown to be released from defensive to offensive seems a good idea. He has good toe when he puts the foot down, and his 20 touches will far eclipse Short's 20, the designated rebounder right now. Maybe Juddy might get there, but he's a long way back right now.

I do agree that Yze could’ve done better.

It may be worth noting that even Hardwick had no answer for Gawn when he was here. I honestly do not think we have a single player on our list that can stop him.

Yze coached him at Melbourne, and he should’ve acknowledged our limitations in stopping Gawn by instructing our players not kick to a contest within his vicinity. That would’ve been better IMO. Instead, we chose to kick to where he stood too often and paid for it.

That is something Yze can take from the game
Thought it was uncharitable of Maxy not acknowledging Jayden short in his acceptance speech for kicking it to him all night!
Surely that wasn’t part of the game plan, and my patience with short has expired. Drop him, Or repurpose him to the forward line, but he’s a liability off half back.

We have a lot of experience down back with Vlastuin, Broad & Balta so, is Short doing enough to keep his position. Some of his games have been very good but is game development into the young guys more valuable. Same with McIntosh and same with Prestia if he comes back. When we look at this year, we are not going to say Short, McIntosh and Prestia were great in their final year in a bottom 4 team, but we might get to say that 2025 was the breakout year for one or more of the 2021 draftees.

Probably right on the 3 games in 11 days thing. We just lacked a bit of energy at times. When we did run the ball with forard handball the game had a totally different look, especially late in Q4.

Josh Lindsay in this years draft should be a prime target for us

Yes and no. Short has been good enough but he is a long way short of the attacking player we need down there. I guess we have been spoil with Houli and Rioli across half back, but whe would have thought either were going to be elite rebounding half backs. We know what short is doing, we don't know what Brown can do in that role, other than we know his kicking is better by some way. Can Smith be that player, probably not but maybe. I would like to see what Mansell can do off half back.

Good year to try options. MacIntosh will be replaced shortly, possibly sooner than later I think. The big midfielder attempt has not really worked. It is a developing year, and we are introducing new players, but there are some deficiencies in our present side that need to be addressed, why not try a few things, and not just in regard to our new draftees.

My patience with him expired some time ago. Our side would improve immediately if he were to be dropped, or even better...traded.

Melbournes game plan involved blocking the 45 degree kick and blocking the switch to force the long one down the line to Gawn.
Our guys knew this and tried to switch and avoid Gawn but sometimes it’s just impossible so we relied on Lynch and others to crest a contest.
Sometimes you have to acknowledge there’s an opposition team trying just as hard as us.
it appeared to me they kicked to him

Juddy is no big sprinter, let him play forward. Smith is putting up good VFL performances. Smith lost his AFL spot to Tresize, with Hugo playing wing.

Banks has been getting the footy at half back. vs Freo his kicks to our talls, Lynch, Nank and the kids. Just got beaten in the air.

There's no way this is Shorts final year. He is 29. Plenty of footy left.

We wouldn't have believed we'd win 3 flags in 4 years …

The sky isn't falling.

Genuinely confused as to what point you’re trying to make because winning three flags isn’t something that has anything much to do with our current prospects, considering that the coach and the vast majority of the players who took us to those flags are either retired or at other clubs

I’m so sick of this worst-team-since-Fitzroy line. For most of Hardwick’s time he had Cotchin, Martin, Rance, Riewoldt, Edwards, and Houli on the list. The only player currently on the list that I could say with any confidence might one day belong in a group of names like that is Lalor.
We started the season with losses of 56, 72, 55, 55, 39, 108, 50, 3 and 35. To get within 50 points ONCE in the first 7 rounds it truly horendous.

Im purely talking about the team in those opening games, so you judge the players as they were then, not when they ended up as. At that point Houli was playing at Essendon, Rance was a forward that did not look good, Edwards was a bit of a whipping boy, Jack had just started taking the leap into a gun forward, Cotch was injury prone and Dusty was playing his first games.

You are absoultely lying if you can say that at the start of 2010, you had full confidence that list of guys will turn into the players they would become.

Media will make us all know when he should retire while letting Pendles play till he's 103.

Gawn stifled our attack pretty basic coaching would have preplanned this event as Melbourne was always going to restrict the peripheral kick to funnel it towards their most potent defensive structure. An option not employed would have been a kick to the pocket for touch a ploy when you have a dominant defensive tall. This would have made Gawn compete in any deep defensive ruck throw ins taking him out of any clearing kick defensive set up and roving goals and repeat entries would have cleared him and the defensive zone.

Are you confused though? Maybe oppositional?

Every club done that, and yes we were more successful but cats and pies were still strong then and are still strong now. It just makes me think where did it go so wrong and how we dropped so fast

Well, the first and most obvious reason why the “worst team since Fitzroy” claim doesn’t stack up is that we weren’t even the worst team in 2010! That was West Coast, who were two games clear on the bottom of the ladder. Moreover, since Fitzroy left at the end of the 1996 season, Melbourne (1997), Brisbane (1998), Collingwood (1999), Fremantle (1999), St Kilda (2000), Fremantle (2001), St Kilda (2001), West Coast (2001), Carlton (2002), St Kilda (2002), Footscray (2003), Carlton (2003), Hawthorn (2004), Footscray (2004), Carlton (2005), Collingwood (2005), Hawthorn (2005), Carlton (2006), Essendon (2006), Carlton (2007), Melbourne (2007), Melbourne (2008), West Coast (2008), and Melbourne (2009) all won fewer games than we did in 2010.

Boggles me, is that their 30+ brigade are still elite, while all guys were cooked at 31-32 and retired. Did we not manage them properly?
The answer has nothing to do with the physical - it was the media, umpires, CFL, Steve Hocking and winning 3 flags in 4 years instead of only 1 that caused our senior guys to lose the motivation and pack it in early

Sidearse gets more respect than 3 time premiership captain Trent Cotchin ever got, and
they've also never changed a key rule of the sport just to hurt Pendles or Sidearse's gameplan. Tells you all you need to know
