We are infinitely better than last year and significantly younger.

You often hear this thing wheeled out where our mediocrity is explained or forgiven by us being a young side but let’s rewind two years, to Round 8, 2023, and look at the players we fielded that day who had less than 30 games. One’s now delisted and none of the other five are players that are especially good footballers - certainly none that you could declare with any confidence are going to be there if and when we’re relevant again.

Did you watch the VFL? None of Blight, Fawcett or Sims deserve a call up, and Ryan is injured.

I specified the point about Ryan/Sims/Fawcett, read back for my reasoning.

Blight shouldn't have been dropped from the AFL team based on his performances as a KPD. Blight more of a like-for-like for Miller than Gray is, and I want to see how a Balta and Blight partnership looks like.

I don’t recall us ever being mouthy. We were simply a nightmare to play against because we would raise the pressure as the game went on. Teams would crumble by the 3rd and in games teams kept up (finals), Dusty would step in.

We were mouthy, not as arrogantly as this particular hawks side that’s done nothing. But remember Cotch tackling Treloar for HTB then rubbing his face in the ground reminding him who had the better list. Dusty chucking the ball in heppells face. Jack, Rance and Lynch loved a chat too.

plus we were campaigners. The amount of times i watched Edwards, Grigg, Vlas, Broad, Grimes, Kmac etc… unnecessarily shove an oppo into the ground or fence before thrown in/ball up brings a tear to my eye.

I like that I see it in this team too, Trainor and Campbell love getting involved. Lalor was shoving around Sciliy and giving it to him yesterday.

Even when we were getting pumped we went back hard on every niggle the hawks threw at us. I loved it.

Lol don't need pick 1. Dusty pick 3. Cotchin pick 2. If we have picks 2 and 3 or 3 and 4, we will still kill it with options.

Take out the Suns, Swans, and Lions academy players, and these players will likely go top 10.
Cooper Duff-Tytler (ruck), Mids> Willem Duursma, Oliver Greeves, Sam Grlj, Dyson Sharp, Fred Rodriguez

Come the national championships, we'll know more. But any of those mids would add nicely to Lalor, Smillie, Hotton and McAuliffe

I like Sam Grlj (speedster), and Fred Rodriguez, another who possesses good speed and power.

Dusty at #3 probably not a great example. Melb basically stuffed up their picks. Dusty was worthy of #1 but because he wasn't as educated as Scully or Trengove they didn't pick him.

Francis Jackson would have been happy to pick Dusty at #1 if they had that pick. They even knocked back Sydney's offer of 2 first rounders for their pick #3 as Sydney were super keen on Dusty.

I agree you will get a mighty fine player anywhere, in say, top 5 but these days very rare you don't get an absolute gun at #1. Higher draft pick could also be important if we need to give up our other first rounder at trade time.

I do think Lynch had a dirty day. As the most experiened forward, it is confidence crushing to watch him miss from slight angles 30 out when we have struggled to take marks up forward, only for him to waste them.

Kicking at goal has been terrible last 2 weeks, I believe it is 13 shouts for 3 goals, 6 behinds and 4 no score registered.

Had a look at the replay.

Tom Brown took a step forward, played better, Faull is making inroads, Trainor obviously better and I thought Lalor, although not perfect, is developing and gains are there to see.

I ignore the score, I thought we where not to bad against the Hawks actually generally. I was happy with the outing from a development perspective. We only get better from it!!:thumbsu:

We tried intimidating the oppo, unfortunately the umps put paid to that every time one of our players went within 10 metres of jiath.
See Luke Trainor rated 8th best in his game best rating on any rising stars but Garcia gets it rated 34th in his game
Has the Korn struck again

Ryan will probably be available this week.
Thought Sims did some good things but agree with you he needs time needs to put on some size was manhandled in ruck contests but I really think we have a good one in him
Perhaps give him a taste later in the year but he will be better after another big preseason and some extra weight and muscle
Not ready yet imo

Looking forward to this fixture , West coast should not win this , having said that they would have this penciled in for a win at the start of the year...Mc Walter needs the win because there will be crickets chirping in the background if they fall short , hoping that the mids worked on accurate forward 50 entries and the forwards worked on making them selves accountable for the opposition defenders , the backline was under constant siege especially so don't have as much of an issue but I bet Miller didn't record this match to show the grandkids in the future....I don't know which team will turn up hungrier to be honest...

Don’t forget Townsend the guy was an animal but set the tone. We have always been better when we have high tackle numbers and contested possessions. Start there

At what picks were those players drafted - not sure if the exact 6, but taking a quick glance at team:

Ross = 40’s
Hugo = 40’s
Miller = 60’s
Ryan = 40’s
Clarke = 30
Mansell = rookie ?
Cumberland = 40’s

In the second half of the year … injuries permitting … our ‘young’ team could include picks 1, 7, 12, 14, 17 (Brown) 21, 24, 27 and 29 (Banks).

Then fingers crossed next year we add 2 x top-4 picks from this draft and Josh Gibcus (8).

That’s 12 x youngsters drafted earlier than Clarke’s pick-30 from the R8 2023 team.

We would have to stuff up the drafting, trading and development monumentally to not be charging up the ladder 2027 onwards.

Have a look at draftguru.com.au. Provides exact data on the averages (games played, awards, likelihood of playing 100 games etc….) of every single draft pick : comparing picks in the top-25 with picks beyond 30 is absolutely pointless … chalk and cheese to the likely outcomes.

What we witnessed yesterday was where we have to get to. A club considered a challenger versus a club considered bottom 3. Hawks half backline was off the charts yesterday for pace and ball movement. Jaith and Barras in particular.
I don't get the melts. We had a 4th gamer in Faull on Josh Battle. How did people think that match up was gonna go?
Reserves had a great win and we are seeing more players return. So the depth is improving. Dunno who we take out, but I would like to see MacAuliffe come in. He has had 3 pretty handy weeks.
I am expecting us to roll WCE and North is a 50/50. So ironically after all the melts in here, we could realistically be 4 wins and 5 losses going into Dreamtime.
Like Frankie says - Relax......
Sado masochist love ❤️ 😍 it

If they won't drop Short, at least try him on the wing and let someone else play his role.
Short was a good half forward and used to kick goals for fun. Dim sim turned him into a half back and while it may have looked good with the players around him he is soft and now we find out his not cut up for it.

WTF !!
When did he sneak back into the side

Mate that Sicily is a piss of View attachment 2305357 His a low iq idiot and always has been. That was a dogs act and was surprised only Tim went in. You also see it all the time someone gets holding the ball and get their faces rubbed in. Another low act which is not a good image for the already ruined game.
Yeah, it’s unsavoury. You see it regularly but wtf? You’re a club captain, you’re winning comfortably. The other guy is a young fella in a team near the bottom.

Just a ****in’ bully. Says a lot about Sicily. Seems a shit bloke.

I would have him slightly above some of those roll players who played well when they were surrounded by class, but struggled once they had to do the heavy lifting, but he is just an average player now in a poor side, so what to do.

I don't think he is playing poorly, but isn't leading when we need him too. I think he is better than last year though. Change his position to see if we can use his long kicking to better advantage, one thing he still has going for him.

We need another tall up forward who can go into the ruck. To me it seems like Gray is the only option unless we go back to Blight or even Kosi, which would be yuck and very short-term.

It's also time to change up the midfield mix. McAuliffe needs to come into the side in place of either McIntosh or Ross.
