And also no coincidence Dow (42) is also playing much better football than he has previously … he’ll only get better over the next 20 games.
I don’t have a lot of faith in it, but if he was decent enough to get to 100 games it would be handy. Obviously some talent in his bloodlines.

Getting to 50 games doesn’t mean they’re a good player. But majority of players are much better in game 50 than they were in game 20. So you can’t place final judgement on players too early. If someone gets 50+ games under their belt and they are still crap, they’re probably cooked as a player.

It’s no coincidence Mansell (58) and Hugo (54) are just now establishing themselves and have began playing decent football.

And also no coincidence Dow (42) is also playing much better football than he has previously … he’ll only get better over the next 20 games. Whether it ends up good enough to be a long term player for us isn’t certain yet. But I’m glad we will let him get to that 50-game milestone to see if he can make the grade.
It also means they become system players and all clubs need them... its the money ball strategy that we had when we got Houli, Grigg, Nank, Pickett ect if they play their role then they keep their spot

Right now Dow is allowing Hopper to focus on his game and Mansell allows for Seth and Lalor to get space and opportunity to get on ball.

LOL didn't i say dim sim turned him into a HB? He played his younger years as a forward came to us as a half forward and played in the vfl as a forward.
Yeah, you did, but that was years ago. I think that ship has sailed. Then again, he probably can't do as much damage (to us) there as what he's doing now.

We need mids that work harder defensively.

Samson Ryan averages more tackles than Dow and Ross and Kmac is just no good as a mid.

McAuliffe needs to be given a chance in there. I'd even try Trezise as a defensive mid. Might not have the clean hands for it, but he's a competitive bastard.
Mansell is the obvious one for me, with his pace and ferocity he would life difficult for opponents and would run hard the other way. Besides he is wasted as a defensive forward. Who would you rather in the guts, Mansell or MacIntosh.

McAuliffe is a very offensive mid with a hard edge, which we also need badly.

Yeah Mansell is the other option we have for that role, but he is probably our best pressure forward so is it robbing Peter to pay Paul?

I thought of Trezise because there's a bit of a logjam of medium defenders and wings atm, and he's probably the best suited of them to move inside.

I don't think McAuliffe is going to be the answer defensively — he's not the most accountable mid, but at least he's a contested beast and did have 11 tackles in his last game.

I don’t recall us ever being mouthy. We were simply a nightmare to play against because we would raise the pressure as the game went on. Teams would crumble by the 3rd and in games teams kept up (finals), Dusty would step in.
We were known as being very lippy. The interview between Schofield and Rance said it best.

I think tackles numbers are a stat that is a little hard to track on players. Since you only get a stat if you affect the disposal or create a stoppage it can be hard to see if a mid gets tackles sometimes.

Ruckmen can get a heap as they can force multiple stoppages around the ground.

Yeah it's not the best way to measure their defensive worth to the team either. I think it's just as much about making sure the oppo mids can't get to space and get the ball away cleanly that we're not doing well.

Ross, for example has always been a very unaccountable mid, which is why he's often placed in attacking roles on the front of the stoppage or getting pulled from the midfield mid-game when we're not going well in there.

Taranto and Hopper are ball-winners who are naturally drawn to the ball like magnets, which allows their opponents to find space and get away cleanly if they don't win it.

I think it's probably the reason why McAuliffe has struggled to break into the team too, because his biggest weakness is also the entire midfield group's biggest weakness.

We need the Prestia/Lambert types that our list is missing.

Well I don't rate defensive pressure forwards. Campbell, Green, Lalor and whomever else is down there should all be pressuring, but our attack from midfield and a mid who can drag down an attacking opponent to me is easily our biggest problem. We get torched on transition and have no pressure in there as Taranto and Hopper are coalface mids. McAuliffe will help in there as he is strong and quick but mainly offensively.

I like Trezise, but I think it is asking a bit much of him as he has not played there before and is just finding his feet where he is.

Face it, with all these young, underdeveloped blokes in the team, we need his experience and hard body to shield them as they develop ;)
Protecting blokes whose bodies are more developed than his own ;)
At this point, he's not passing on any experience to our emerging players as he is the weak link and puts in less effort than most of them.

Trezise isn’t physical enough for mine to play in that position.

I think the suggestion was that Trezise would provide defensive run rather than be another midfield bull which Taranto and Hopper already do. I think this makes sense. The player I would also like to see in the midfield playing that role is Steely Green. He is quick, has endurance and is a very good tackle. He is also a ready good kick if he gets to the outside.

Hard to find a flaw in that statement.

Out : Jnr, Short (both omitted)

In : Algers, McAuliffe (both on a couple of weeks of form in VFL)

It would be a great time to get fair dinkum and show the team we're fair dinkum by calling on Short to regain form in the Magoos ....

Campbell Gray doing a lot of ruck work at training apparently. Perhaps ruck/fwd this week?
Smillie not training so whoever said he was debuting probably needs a new source
Gibcus participating in all the non-contact drills
+ a couple of other notes

That's a great sign. Kid should be playing AFL.

Difficult for him to break into the side down back atm, but there's a spot open up forward.
