For mine, Mugabe is a complex individual and an complex person to assess. On one hand he was a freedom fighter, a hero, and on another hand, he's become a dictator who has attempted to compensate black people for the wrongs made before 1980.

The very situation in Zimbabwe has left white South Africans concerned about the future implications to them and has inadvertently probably caused undue angst.

What are people's thoughts on the man?

I agree with Mandela that he's become a tragic fail of leadership. A sad story indeed.

I find it difficult to understand how he hasn't been taken out, either within Zimbabwe or on the rare occasions that he has traveled out of the country.

Perhaps to do with the fact the vast majority of the Zimbabwean population is coloured and still see him as their liberation hero?

Mugabe is a tremendous leader. He is the pride and soul of the Zimbabwean people. He is acknowledged as the few remaining lions of Africa. He fought for his country against British imperialism and is now fighting against the new wave of neocolonialism which is gripping the African continent. He was right when he striped those lush fertile farming land from the British. They had no right over the land when they acquired it through rape, violence and murder.

He stood up to against imperialist forces such as the World Bank and IMF with their predatory loans which has crippled and blackmailed many African countries. Mugabe is one of the greatest African/Black leaders of all time and history will vindicate his actions.

Mugabe and Nkomo were heroes of Zimbabwe's liberation, Mugabe is now a stain on that country. He will be remembered for the fight for self determination and reviled for what happened afterwards.

I came to be friends with a former shrink who got out 10 years ago and currently am friends with a lad whose parents did run a collage for non whites and were deported before Mugabe achieved his aim in that nasty war where he fought the South Africans who were backed by the Americans and Isreali's in Rhodesia.

Interesting to just know the people and thier families, so much different to an Australian..Both's ancestors were immigrants to Zimbabwe. One from India and a muslim, the other from wales and catholic.

Typical failed leader. Rose to power by taping into genuine resentment and desire for change. Once he got the leadership he did nothing much to make the reforms his supporters wanted. When they got restless he started appeasing them by depriving others. In the process wiping out a productive agricultural sector. They could have had prosperity for all.

Did some security training in SA and the SAPOl lecturer said something similar but was blowing SAPOL's trumpet because SA being a convict free colony didn't suffer from something similar, so he rekoned

Look at what the British and Americans do to all the other non cHristian nations that are recourse rich.

They were able to Maneuver mugabe into a position they could exploit you with him.
