Have old players like Brereton apologized to other players? I'd have a lot of respect for him if he has quietly reached out to some of his old targets during the time he went on the FS with Lewis. Or any ex-player who has.
If they were really serious about redress and welfare the clubs could organize meetings between former players like what governments did in South Africa and Northern Ireland. The AFLPA could up their budget for old players as well from new agreements with AFL.
as a corollary, they could do more for a lot of old players, not just the indigenous ones, with issues related to having played high level footy.
Brereton is not too bad. Just admits he was a thug and admits what he's done.
What he had to put up with was probably worse than racism too. I woulda hated it way more.
As far as Muir goes, I wasn't around when it happened but Senior players doing that over the fence I know would've still been clearly been wrong even then.
But like a few things back then big fish, little pond. They could do and did do a lot of things.

I hope in regards to the bold but that you weren’t talking about Brerton...to state he put up with things worse than Muir racism is a bit too much

I still can't believe a 17 year old was suspended for 2.5 years for kicking. Besides the fact that the opponent was uninjured and said he wasn't kicked that suspension is just insane. It's hard to come up with any reason for that other than the people on the tribunal wanting to destroy him. Compare that to some of Leigh Matthews hits below that he was only suspended for 5 weeks total until he was deregistered for the Bruns one. The elbow to Barry Cable's head (25 secs into the video) happened 1 week before Muir got his two and a half year suspension for kicking. Leigh Matthews wasn't suspended for that. Those are just the Leigh Matthews ones caught on tape.

Fairly difficult to get a clearer example of bias than the one you've related here. Shameful double-standards that tell you everything you need to know about the ingrained prejudice that has operated in so many arenas of life in our country over the years.

Strangely, nobody has ever called him Mad Dog Matthews.
Or turned him away from his Club reunion.

Yeah I dunno man. Would not have been easy that's for sure.
Both instances it would of been hard to not lash out.
Even things in the article about the Pies cheersquad and the SANFL cheersquad. Lucky he didn't jump the fence.
Muir faced a Life long persecution by his own club and the public conpaired to golden boy Bereton who got a cushy highly paid media job and his sins washed away by the media

he was thug for no other reason than being a thug...this was a guy that stepped on a player hand and neck and Walked besides a player being carried off injuired jerring him

he was and still is a massive massive flog which I have very little sympathy for

Geez he loved to go the elbow, didn't he? I've always reckoned an elbow to the face, especially delivered at speed, is at least as bad as a punch but it doesn't seem to carry the same stigma. For example, Soloman's elbow on Ling was only two months after Hall's hit on Staker but, while most Geelong supporters would remember the Soloman one, everyone remembers Hall's punch.

I don't think people should say they put up with worse. Everyone has their own story and his maybe horrible, Muir's is also horrible. I don't thing rating experiences on a scale of worse is helpful or legit.

It's enough to turn anyone into an egotistical botox-ridden superannuated lounge lizard.

Yup.. no doubt Dermie rolling around nn his Ferrari getting "you knob Dermie" thrown at him is clearly worse than a bloke hiding in the dunnies waiting for a mob to clear out so he can go home and not get beaten up.
Yup... parallels exactly.

FFS. but hey, if thats your metric of worse than racism... then good day to you.

Go Catters

Ive read some insensitive shit on Big Footy. But f**k. Even for me this is a little bit much. Well not really, but s**t!

Yeah that is fair enough. I see that point.
I was responding to a post though that asked if he should apologise for the things he did. Not really in a lot of cases.
Some should be apologising to him (And probably have)
Which is related to Muir as I don't think he should apologise for some of the blokes he belted.
If you want to go low and get a reaction sometimes you get your whack.

It pretty much confirms that a player's perception depends an awful lot on how the footy media treat you. Matthews has never, EVER, faced proper scrutiny for how he played. Think of how often McAvaney would basically drool all over him in the commentary box. Are you ok with violence on the field Bruce? Never realised.

Elbows to me are easily worse than punches. Some punches - not all - were at least delivered face to face. Elbows are always without warning.

He certainly had some rough times. Particularly in relation to his father. But nowhere near what Muir has bee through right from his early childhood.

Points out the hypocrisy of the media again too. They've barely raised a murmur about his old man for decades. Can't help wondering if it wasn't someone like him a lot more would know the story.

In martial arts, the elbow is preferred because its harder than the fist and much less likely to break.
