Yep. No one was on him for 3 quarters and when Mattner being used as a temporary meausure tagged him in the fourth quarter he wasn't nearly as effective. In his absence Shirley showed us how much of a valuable player he really is to the Crows.

For all those people who rubbish Shirley and call for him to be dropped - you got a pretty good look at what happens when he doesn't play and take the job of cutting out their dominating mid-fielder.

Begley couldn't do it, Massie couldn't do it. Scott West had a million possessions tonight. It takes a certain abiility to be shut players down in the centre and these guys can't do it.

Robert Shirley is an integral part of this side.

I hope Shirley is alright to play next week. Once I knew that he'd pulled out, I really wanted to change my tip. :(

Yep I was thinking how much we missed Shirley especially in the 3rd quarter when West had 15 or so possessions and totally dominated the clearances.

WE all assume in hindsight that Shirley could have made the difference

That is drawing an extremely long bow and is frankly a "safe" comment to make because we cannot really question it.

Suffice to say that there were many other issues that contributed to tonights loss.

We have Shirley's performances in the past 4 games this year to back up our comments WW.

You only have your personal prejudice.

Shirley is vital to the crows of 2005. Not only did they miss his effective tagging, what they really did miss was Shirleys toughness and agression towards the opposition that he has shown in the last 3-4 weeks.

Robert Shirley would have done a LOT better job than the likes of Begley, Massie and Mattner.

Robert Shirley is a very important component of the side. You seriously under-rate a good tagger.

Not a prejudice just a belief he's not on the pedestal everyone currently has him on.

The bloke is playing the same footy as last year - yet because Stinger has gone and he is apparently the heir apparent, his footy skills have gone up and now he's a much better player - sorry but he's not!! :mad:

Robert Shirley is an average 'backbone' player who has the ability to do an important job quite well on most occasions. The disturbing thing is that when he is not the side the team cant get the right balance.

Yes tonight absolutely agree - why use mattner one of our best attacking players in recent weeks as a tagger ??? - lost out on two fronts!

Until someone can prove that an average tagger makes a difference I will stay with my view - why then is Judd the the Brownlow favourite AGAIN - hasn't he been tagged each week by these what you say importnat components.

Hell just imagine what Judd would have done just having a normal opponent - it makes you shudder :rolleyes:

He is not the messiah but he sure as hell is important to this team. More than you are willing to admit.

Every tagging option you threw up in the past has been exploited as ********house taggers. Massie, Begley etc are not taggers. Never have been and never will be. Robert Shirley is a tagger and a good one at that. In 4 games he has played in he did his job on the likes of Judd, Francou, Kirk (whenhe was moved on him in the 2nd half).

Fact is we need him and we play better when he is in the side. Sure he is not a great player but he does his job week in week out with a minimum of fuss.

Blind belief you mean.

He was the secondary tagger that occasionally got used last year, because Stenglein was the primary one.

This year he HAS stepped up. He has had the better of Judd, Burns, Francou, and Paul Williams in succession. He reduced all of those to very sub-average games.

They're facts, and you can't change them by just making contrary statements without basis.

When an innovative coach takes the game down a different path I can assure you, you will argue a different line.

Average players will always be average irrespective of the roles you want to classify them under ;)

Taggers are important. Shirley cut Judd out of the game. Who esle has done that this year?????? Shirley might not get a lot of the ball (averages 12.25 disposals per game) but he prevents the opposition's best midfielder from getting their possesions and when they do get then he makes sure that they are ineffective.

Do you think that West would have had close to 40 possesions tonight if Shirley was taggin him? I sure as hell don't. Had Shirley played tonight West wouldn't have had the influence he did and the outcome of the game might have been different. In 3rd quarter alone West had 17 possesions and ********loads of clearences. Stop West and Darcy doesn't get easy goals.

Shirley won't win you a game but he will save you one ;)

Facts: Judd yes!, but Burns has had a very ordinary season, Francou coming back from a double knee op, Williams got crunched in which qtr???

Yeah, really tough assignments - can't believe the party line hear and the placing of a good ordinary player way above his ability to deliver.

I'll say it again - footy has been played for 100+ years with the best players always having a "tag" - the term tag has only been in recent years as coaches try and leave their imprint on a game through the introduction of new jargon.

Fact is average players are average players - full stop!!!!! - don't care what jargon you want to apply!

By this you nean minimum of influence?

I'll restate when the key midfielders each week in every game stop getting best on ground then and only then will I acknowledge the role of a tagger.

And is Shirley in the top echelon of the AFL taggers - course not - unless your a Crow supporter!
