Shirley went onto Kirk after Williams got crunched. He's another no-hoper too if you say it quickly enough!! :rolleyes:

Yeah, they're all aged 53 years of age and only got one leg!! Popeye could have kept them kickless too. ;)

No party line from me - just an ability to give credit where it's due.

FACT: Shirley has a positive influence on this team. No matter what spin you put on it, Shirley is an important component to this team. Taggers are important. If they weren't West Coast wouldn't have traded picks 12 and 28 for one. This is another point that illustrates that you are wrong with your perceptions of taggers ;)

So we put our tagger on their tagger?

Didn't you say at the end of last season you couldn't understand the Crows offering Shirley a new contract and certainly not two years - has your appreciation of his talents changed that much in 4 weeks of footy?

How can you say that he has minimum of influence when he cuts the opposition's best midfielders right out of the game. Just look at what jobs he has done this year.

Judd was disgraceful against us and far from BOG. When moven on Kirk in the second half Shirley cut him right out of the game and allowed him 7 ineffective touches. Up until half time Kirk was BOG.

That is not minimal of influence. That is having an influence. I have this year's results to back up my arguments, you have your perception.

Shirley is one of the better taggers in the AFL but not one of the best because he might not get as much footy himself.

Taggers are important says who! - because some coach trots this line out - again show me a tagger who stops a midfielder getting in the best players, BOG, or a brownlow and you will have my attention!

Now you really must take the team "Rose Colored Glasses" off.

Your saying he's gone from struggling to get a game last year now to one of the AFL's most influential taggers - pull the other one it rattles.

Shirley has stopped Judd among others this year from getting into best players.

You are in the minority here. You along with a couple of others are the only ones that beleive taggers are not importnat. Again why did a team trade away first and second round draft picks if they are not important??????:confused:

His record this year speaks for itself. If you weren't so blind you would see it ;)

Firstly I don't really like the term tagger - what WC had was an abundance of attacking midfielders, they wanted a defensive midfielder for the midfield unit balance.

A tagger - is someone who completely forgoes their game to stop another player , even does not look at the whereabout of the ball

A defensive midfielder, like a defensive wingman, looks to negate first and initiate attack thereafter .

Shirley is an average tagger, not a bad player, but he's not as good or as important that you are making him out to be.

The argument is premised on one performance an an apparent lack of alternative options - your POV would change I believe if this was not the case and that is why I fizzle on the topic.

It seems to work for Mattner why not for Shirley????

Besides Shirley reputation in the past as a tagger has been solid. He has done the job on many good players in the past even when Stinger was still here so to say his reputation is forged on 4 games is ignorant.
 
Shirley has been a good tagger for the last 3 years, has just been behind Stenglein. Now he's been given back the job and has been excellent.

No further argument, he deserves to be there. WW's argument has no basis in reality.

Because one has an upside based on latent talent, the other a workhorse who is as good as he's going to get.

could not be more wrong. An average player with the right role, is a lot more than just an average player - they are guys who found their career.

Look at Peter Caven, Jose Romero, Simon Prestigiacomo, David Teague etc etc... role is everything.

all players are looking to find their spot, once they have found it (or finally failed to) that is when they can be best judged.
