Okay so I just watched GameDay.

Interesting piece on Robin Nahas.

Hamish asked Alex Rance about Robin and this is what Rance said.

*Great fella.
*Shows how good our depth is.
*Hasn't taken all of his opportunities in the preseason*
*Will be back in the side at some point.

Channel 7 show footage of Nahas on the bench with the green vest on. Nahas has his head down, low confidence, looks disinterested in the match.

Ling asks Rance whether the body language has anything to do with the coaches decision to sub him. Ling also brings up the fact that Chaplin got a knock to the head Nahas wasn't pumped up ready to go. Ling asked whether that played a part in the decision to completely drop him Round 2.

Rance said that Nahas is a nervous guy, it's hard to read him. Sometimes he's perceived as 'not ready'.

What does all this mean? I can't make much sense of it...

That Channel 7 footage of him on the bench is rubbish. He was up running along the boundary regularly during the game. Was out in the breaks warming up. Channel 7 can FOAD. Fox Footy is way better even with the half time serving of wang.

Just pmsl

Rance was basically saying that you can't take a few seconds of footage and make assumptions about the guy's attitude. That he's basically a pretty insular and nervous type of guy, and his body language could be easily misconstrued. But Rancey did also seem to be holding something back. As if there was a little bit to the story, but he was being careful with what he revealed on national tv.

not much we can take away from that.

he didn't train hard enough maybe?
he has trouble containing his nerves and that's how he reacts?

i'm sure robbie will come back firing

Yeah absolutely. He has his doubters, primarily because some of his tackles don't stick, he's not big enough, etc, but he can kick 30-40 goals a year. That's a very valuable player, maybe his defensive efforts haven't impressed Dimma as of late?

When Rance said he hasn't taken his chances during the preseason, I think that comment was alarming. What was he doing? Not training properly, going out, getting sub-par results compared to his teammates, not improving further? I'm just curious because for a player to notice and acknowledge you haven't done your best, it's quite a big thing.

Yeah same as above, read into that others went harder off the track perhaps and theyre rewarding them to begin the season?

Kicks more goals and lays more tackles than the other small forwards, be interesting to see what theyre doing with Nahas.

Massive beat up about his so called attitude - people just make that assumption on a few seconds of footage.

Reminds me of when Jack got concussed against the Saints a few years back. Clearly was concussed and not his normal self, showed footage of him being told he was going to be subbed out (and his subsequent reaction) and people take that as him 'having a sook'. Unfortunately, impressions are based on what people choose to remember.

Same story with Dusty.

Was the one that got us over the line in a NAB game with his gut running in the fourth. Might have been against the Dons. Wouldn't worry about his form to much but it does mean when he come back in he will be giving it a huge crack.

Look i do like Robin Nahas but he certainly has limitations that unfortunately he wont be able to overcome and will be pushed out of the side once we have a reasonable replacement in place
One sided
Tackles dont stick
drifts in and out way too much
doesnt add enough through the rotations
brushed off the ball far too easily

I'm Hoping that 1 of McDonough,O'Hanlon or Williams will soon replace Nahas (hopefully we can trade to another team with a good pick coming to us)

Required player, we don't have anybody who can do what he can do at this point. King is the coaches favourite, but when it comes to crumbing packs, breaking lines, and kicking goals, he's got nothing on Nahas. Hopefully he returns sooner than later.

He was busy chasing a bag thief, too many lattes

Seems Nahas has them covered in goals and tackles, goal assists were shared between the small forwards.

I think people have a misconception in that we have 3 small forwards (Edwards, Nahas, King) and that they are all similar types. They are not. Edwards is more the 4th or 5th midfield rotation, King is the defensive forward specialist, and Nahas is the pure 'small forward crumber' type (I'm obviously generalising madly, here). They can all kick a few goals - obviously Nahas has the best record.

There may be games where we can play all of them. There may be games where we can only play one. With McGuane up and firing (2 goals a game), that changes a lot of people's expectations about the forward line. When Foley comes back, that will change the midfield rotations - probably affecting Edwards' game the most. Who knows what Vlaustin, Knights and Arnott will do?

One significant problem we have is that our midfielders don't kick a lot of goals - Martin is OK, but Cotchin, Deledio, Conca and Foley don't quite do enough. In the past we needed those small running forwards to kick a reasonable proportion of our goals - otherwise it was all Jack. Interesting that Vickery's good goalkicking games over the years (say 3+ goals) equate to Jack having a quiet game. It seems to be one or the other. Hopefully that changes this year.

I have little doubt that Nahas will be back and play some good football this year.

There is just no way he would have played round one if all that was happening. I don't think there's much in it.

shane edwards hasn't kicked a goal yet, seems to spend a lot of time in the middle though
Someone will find the stat for me...
Edwards has I reckon had more 'score involvments' this year than anyone else.... I recall he had the immediate prior touch to at least 3 of Jacks goals on Friday night.

Back to Nahas though... ultimately he offers more than King IMO. (& I love Kingy... it's just that he is limited)
Clone Kingy's toughness and long kicking with Robbie's speed and goal sense and you would have a real A grade goal sneak.
