Considering he's the bloke with highlights like this:

and this:

Can you blame him? The torp definitely has a place in the game. Not sure how much the sports science addicts will agree, but it doesn't surprise me at all that he can still outkick them all.

70 out.. why not try a torp.. rather than just your standard drop punt into the square.. the trajectory of the drop punt is predictable and a lot easier to defend.. the torp on the other hand.. if it turns out to be a mongrel.. could be a blessing in disguise.. catch the opposition of guard..

You can hold the pill in torp mode.. the opposition might zone off in anticipation of a mongrel.. then you can quickly switch to drop punt mode.. and catch the bastards of guard there as well. Even if say the mongrel lands in their hands.. big deal.. they still have to take it the length of the pitch to score.. there's also a good chance it might land in our hands for an easy mark.

Plenty of ways to utilize the torp.

It was something like the next three times before it got packed away...

Hasn't been an exponent of it of any real consistency since Fletcher retired.

That clip made the argument well. Even more so now... the 25m kickoff allowance takes nearly all the risk out of the torp in that situation — even a flub will be 50m-plus from goal.

+ a torp doesn’t actually need to be kicked for it to be effective ...

... the opposition just needs to believe that it could be kicked (and kicked reliably) thus stretching their zone and creating holes elsewhere.
