RB3 review at Game Informer, giving it a 9.25

In many ways, Rock Band 3 is a culmination of Harmonix’s efforts to bring music to the masses. But it’s also a new chapter in the franchise that starts the gradual merging of real and game-based music. Plenty of naysayers have already declared music games dead. Harmonix certainly hasn’t gotten the message; this band is primed for a new tour.

$288 is robbery. If you buy the game here and buy the equipment - drums, guitar etc from America, will it work on an aussie xbox.

Don't know much about the technical side.
I'd assume so. I got a Guitar Hero guitar when I was over in the states and it works perfectly fine.

You told me you didn't have Guitar Hero. Now we're going to have to play it together and I'm going to have to impress your clothes off with my awesome skillz.

I probably told you I didn't have Guitar Hero because I didn't have it. Only got GH3 after playing it at my cousins the night before and we went to GameStop the next day and the same game was there for $30 new with the guitar, so I thought why not.

I'm pretty shit, although am in the medium of being probably a bit too good for easy and not good enough for medium. Very close to 100%ing 'School's Out' after like my 5th time playing the game.:D

Is GH3 even out on PS3? **** me that's an old game.

I have:
Rock Band
Rock Band 2
Rock Band ACDC
Guitar Hero 5
Guitar Hero Metallica

and one other Guitar Hero game. Get those and we'll play properly :D.

a few more good reviews....

Video games -- not just rhythm games, but all video games -- rarely show this much ambition. Even more rare are occasions where developers manage to fulfill the impossibly lofty goals they set before themselves. Rock Band 3 manages both with ease, backing up brilliant ideas with flawless execution.

...

Rock Band 3 is the greatest rhythm game ever made, and quite possibly the only rhythm game you need to own.

It's not only an achievement within it's own genre, but a landmark for the entire medium as well.

About as close to perfect as you're going to get.

Yeah, was pretty bad.

Though Pro Guitar totally changes how you play Rock Band 3, and is brilliant in its implementation, buying it isn't going to get you groupies (why else would you learn guitar?). Get the real deal at this point. Stop living your rock fantasies through cheap plastic toys.

WTF? Doesn't the same go for almost any video game? Many of which realism is what the developers aim for.

IGN said:
But, ultimately, the Pro Guitar is kind of dumb. If you're going to pay this much for a fake guitar with buttons that make it hard to slide your fingers on, why not spend a little more and buy the real thing? You're just upgrading from one guitar with plastic buttons to another guitar with way more plastic buttons.

Ummm, maybe because it's a game, f**kwit - you know, with scores, power-ups, online games, online leaderboards, etc and can be played by both those who can and can't play a real guitar, unlike a real band.

Pro mode I assume gives good guitar players more of a challenge - I doubt it was made to be for everyone, which, maybe I'm out of line here, but I'm just guessing that why it is called "pro" mode, perhaps?

Personally I can and do play the real thing, and have for almost 20 years (not that I'm any good). I still love playing RB. I play it more than the real thing these days.

Would like to have seen him review The Sims. :D

Anyone who wants to export the Rock Band 2 songs (PAL edition) for play in Rock Band 3 can use the first 16 digits of your 25 digit code on the back of the RB2 manual (according to Harmonix)

Cool, good to see they aren't charging for it. :thumbsu:

Just picked up my copy. :)

You can get three Doors songs for free during the first week of release - hopefully that includes Australia.

From 26th October to 1st November you'll be able to download "Light My Fire," "Riders on the Storm" and "Touch Me," along with the Pro Guitar and Pro Bass add-ons for each song, from the Rock Band 3 in-game music store.

Well, it's actually 800 points, but worth it. Ive now got RB1, RB2, Lego & Green Day + DLC to go with the new songs

And, yes I also have the free Doors songs (Light My Fire, Touch Me, Riders on the Storm), which can only be downloaded from the in game Rock Band 3 Music Store (NOT the Xbox Marketplace) until November 1 (US time)

I'm the same have a few GH games and find on guitar I'm too good for easy and shit to average on medium. My daughter kicks my arse at the Guitar.

I'm not sure what Tima's issue is. I've always thought that people could better spend their time learning real guitar and given this pro guitar is much more similar to the real thing, my point is strengthened.

Good for an occasional party game but as something you practice at, pfft, get the real thing.

The issue with those particular paragraphs I quoted (and now your post :p), is that Rock Band 3 is a video game, not tutorial software. The argument of playing a real guitar instead of RB or GH is an old, and still flawed, argument. The point is that RB is a video game you play for fun/enterainment/the challenge/whatever - just like every other video game. There are scores, challenges, leaderboards, powerups, online multiplayer etc.

Many people who play rock band do already play real guitar, like myself - same goes for the other instruments. Being a guitarist already was part of the attraction to the game in the first place, which, is also the case for many other games - those who play real golf enjoy a golf video game, or someone who drives cars for fun may be interested in Gran Turismo (don't forget GT too has extra controllers such as steering wheels, pedals, chairs etc) - there are many other examples.

As far as I know, "Pro" mode is basically for "pros". It's a whole new set of higher difficulty levels (Pro Hard, Pro Expert etc), which I assume, is better suited to those who already play guitar (and so is probably safe to say already have a real guitar). My brother, who also has a real guitar, finishes many of the songs on expert first shot, and he's not a good real guitarist, although knows how to play it. So there is definitely a place for higher difficulty levels, and the logical next step is more buttons or strings (both of with are coming for RB3)

Sure as a beginner, even a novice, you may learn or better some skills which can be applied to the real thing, but that is no different to many other games. You can learn stuff from playing Golf games, Card games, Skating games, etc etc. I learnt how to play poker on a video game - I did not play the video game to learn poker however. I played the game because it was a fun game (and had naked girls if I won :D).

As far as having an issue with the review goes, what I highlighted was only part of it. There are contradictions, sentences which don't make a real lot of sense, and it's very poorly worded in parts, which reads more like a forum/blog post, or something I'd write, rather than a professional review by one of the world's biggest video game review sites.

On top that there are the things he left out about the game (new additions) and controllers - a major one being, that he forgot to mention that the guitar he is complaining about, is actually a fully functional midi guitar, so it is a real instrument. :o

FWIW, I get where you are coming from mate. Being a real guitarist myself, and listening to mainly guitar based music, I realy hope the rise of the guitar game triggers some peoples interest in learning the real thing, who may not have played otherwise, and hopefully we get a lot more good bands as a result. But still, that's up to the person, not the game. The game has nothing to do with it really. Being more realistic, I dont see how that can be considered a negative, or "dumb" as the reviewer says, especially after saying the implementation of pro mode is "brilliant". To say what the reviewer said, I think should have no place in a game review - especially when they've singled out Rock Band, and I doubt will continue with all future games. He is not meant to be reviewing other peoples decisions.

Anyway, long post sorry. Hope that clears it up a little where I'm coming from though ;)

An update for those on PS3 with the free Doors tracks and RB2 export problem

http://www.rockband.com/forums/show...ve-in-EU-AUS&p=4136303&viewfull=1#post4136303

We just got word from Audio that SCEE should have turned this offer on in their store. That means that EU/AUS folks should be able to get the free Doors tracks now. Please follow up here if that's not the case and we'll escalate.

As for international export, we're still working to resolve that issue and we're waiting to hear back from SCEE. We're expecting progress on Monday, but if they follow up over the weekend I'll post an update here with more info. Thanks all for your patience.

Rockband 2 export is now working, well for PS3 at least, but I'd assume same for 360. Roughly 2gb file.

Just ordered RB3 from Gamestation in UK for about $41.00.

Ordered Pro Drums from Barnes and Noble for $178 including shipping.

Should be here in a week... Never ordered from OS before so a bit nervous!

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

8th Dec update.

Drums arrived in one piece less than 6 days after ordering from USA. Very happy. About to open them up...

Ok guys the results are in...

1. The purchase.

I myself was quite new to buying from overseas - but I can tell you right now that this will not be the last time I do it. Deliveries were prompt (6-8 days) and in very good condition. UK games (gamestation UK) all worked a treat and gear from USA (Barnes and Noble) fully compatible.

2. The game.

Now I must quantify my thoughts here. I have not played Rock Band 2, only the original. This 3rd game keeps the core positives of the original (a much more dirty rock feel than GH, strong charts etc) and adds many more goodies: Improved character creation, career goals, easy drop in out of play (much better feature than I expected), no fail mode, improved song search and stats.

Imported songs from RB1 work a treat and was pretty painless to do.

3. Pro mode - drums

Ok The drums are great compared to RB1 drums. They are noticeably quieter. The cymbals were a bit fiddly to set up, but boy were they worth the wait.

Note: I am not a drummer. Drums in pro mode are so much better than the ordinary version. You get such a greater feel for the song and drumming in general. I actually now understand why it is so important to have the blue pad as a Tom and the blue cymbal as the ride. I have found myself listening so much harder to the track. I have learned more about drumming in the past few days than I did in months with RB1.

The training mode is excellent. It is structured well and teaches lots of techniques to be used later on.

I thoroughly recommend anyone that enjoyed the drums in RB1 to take the plunge and get the pro set. It has been worth every cent.

4. The rest.

The regular guitar mode is as expected - I haven't forked out for the pro guitar as I already play a 'real' one and I don't really feel inclined to spend megabucks on a 108 button guitar when it won't teach me anything.

I can see some real potential in the harmonies of multiple vocals and another mic may be my next purchase.

Haven't tried keyboards yet.

In summary buy the drums, you won't be disappointed.
