News Rocky tells Rhys to pull his head... up?

Rockliff has a habit of running his mouth in public without thinking about what he's saying. Not the first time he's thrown his teammates under the bus, even if that wasn't his intention.

Really should worry about getting fit and leading by example, rather than being a seagull out the back.
That's a massive generalisation.,and takes no account of Rockcliffes loyalty in the toughest times.gratuitous. .

Rocky is just trying to uphold those 'classic' footy values about not playing for frees. Once dwayne explained he changed his tone. Very poor targetting a 2nd gamer, like everything with us ATM its just, average.. you wouldnt catch Luke Hodge calling out a second gamer, especially about 'playing for frees' - poor kid.

Don't know if it is the captain's job. Perhaps coach should make these calls. Doing it publicly will do no one any favours. Easy to understand how a young guy may feel aggrieved. If he or anyone else wants to play elsewhere it's because they feel they have been publicly humiliated. Really poor people skills. I'm not on the Bolton bus, but if you were to compare the mentalities this would not be how he'd do it. I don't think he's a particularly good coach, but his psych work is exemplary. May as well help the kid pack his bags.

If he leaves over that, then he certainly isnt the Beast Mode we all think he is. Think people are over analysing this entire thing and making mountains out of mole hills.

Wasnt something that should have been said publicly, Rocky will learn from it. Was what he said that damaging.. no.

So here we have it- we're travelling so well [reminder- we've won 1 game this year] that our self-appointed tackling technique guru, who has excelled himself [not] this year through his on-field leadership and example, feels free to cut loose on one of our more promising first-year players. I mean, this is our Captain's role, right? To bag the kids. Why not? Someone's got to do it.

If it looks like a rabble, sounds like a rabble, and acts like a rabble- it's a fair chance we are a rabble.

After this, can only hope Leppa doesn't shove Rockliff up against a wall by the throat- that would about complete the rabble circuit.

Do we actually have access to any sort of expert media advice? Like STFU?

I despair.

I found this post very amusing. Who are you parodying? Just BF in general?

Luke Hodge was caught drink driving while injured a week out from finals.

Nick Reiwoldt publicly abused one of St Kilda's female staff members for telling the players to go interact with the crowd after their win last weekend.

Even the better team captains make mistakes... it could be worse, we could be stuck with Trent Cotchin as captain:eek:

Yeah but coming back from calling a three gamer a diver takes a bit of work. I'm not blaming Rocky. Management need to know the limitations of their staff. Footballers are footballers. Why do we have an expectation that they are eloquent orators. Clearly nothing should be said that isn't scripted. So back to square one. I point to a disengagement of the coach to not realise the need to either say the words himself or write the words for the player to read. The players only have to play footy and slap each other on the back. It's not a yuge issue in isolation but may be symptomatic of a greater ill.

Rocky has always struck me as an x's and o's type and is not the most articulate fella (nothing wrong with that at all).

One favourable interpretation of his "disappointment with the fans" could be constructed to mean the blow-up of his comments in general, disappointment in himself and the subsequent overreaction by many (which there was).

Live and learn - I'm a little surprised how quickly some are to pull out the pitchforks and torches.

Absolutely.
Over reaction times 10.

I think overreactions work both ways. It's possible to be critical of something a player does without it equating to "getting out the pitchforks". Unless they're Dylan12 :p

Maybe those talking of pitchforks are overreacting. ;)

Look, do I need my torch and pitchfork or not?! Do you KNOW how much fuel is these days, and how much is needed to RUN said torch?!

(My pitchfork is the FauxOutrage 9000 and my torch is a Melodrama 2001 if you must know)

This guy has the highest level job available as a footballer. He doesn't need to be an "eloquent orator", but it is definitely a job requirement that he be able to speak astutely with the media.

I'm not specifically trained or especially talented in many requirements of my job, but if I want to progress my career, it is an expectation I will need to develop skills in areas outside my comfort zone. Why should footballers be held to different standards?

And it would seem that those around him in managerial positions haven't pinpointed this to be a weakness. And to me, this is a big part of good management. That's all.

If you love your club you don't care how you get the ball forward, you use every trick in the game and every trick outside the game. Rockliff is a big disappointment, made worse because he is our captain.

Why is Rockliff a big disappointment?
Because he took a young player in his first games and crucified him. He endorsed a bunch of media deadshits who in the lads first game gave him a reputation which he will find it hard to kick for the rest of his football career. Never has this been done before in VFL/AFL history.
