One at a time. Give us your two cents.
What's wrong with the footy team.
Is it the recruiting ? The conditioning ? The coaching ? The players ? If it's the players...then the recruiting dept. must be screwed. Are some hefty contracts annoying some other underpaid players ?

I ask you tiger fans.
What's wrong ?

True. Where is the option for all of the above? :)

Probably a combination of all four options in the poll. The recruiting has been disapointing in the past few years with all the recycled players that have been picked up via the draft the likes of Houlihan etc. This years rookies we drafted is even disappointing when you consider two of the three were recycled (Shir and Pickering) if ever you are going to draft rookies surely it would be in the rookie draft? The club has admitted that they felt they were closer to a premiership after 2001 than what they actually were. Those recycled draft picks are even more disappointing when you consider that some of the rookies we have drafted such as Coughlan, Rodan, Zantuck and Newman have been succesful and look to be long term prospects. Who knows what other types of quality young players we could have had had we not picked the recyled players.

Some of the contracts in recent times to Bourke, Daffy and even Gaspar whos large contract seems even more excessive when he isn't playing. The effects of Bourke's and Daffy's are just about gone come seasons end which hopefully gives us some flexibility regarding the salary cap. Hopefully the club will delist the duds come seasons end King etc. Duncan Kellaway, Rogers and probably Cameron should all be asked to retire come seasons end all else delisted. A couple of questions on Rogers, Foxhat posted in a thread last week that Rogers still has a year to run on his contract. Does this mean we can't delist him? Or if we do delist him we have to pay his next years contract out and that will be included in next seasons salary cap?

A lot of posters (myself included) on this board have said who it would be great if we could get a big name recruit come trade time (Nathan Brown, Nick Stevens). However thinking about this is it worthwhile when we will probably need to give up early draft picks and we really need to pick up some of the best kids in country. Having said that Brown and Stevens are still relatively young and maybe worth trading for depending on how large the price we have to pay is.

My 2 cents worth

Probably a mix of all those factors rodan and more

Look i know our list is far from the best and we can kick ourselves over the many missed recruiting opputunties, but surely it only explains part of the reason why we are a joke at the minute.

Some of the players are not up to AFL standard and hopefully we can go some way into cleaning out the list at years end but i still believe the nucleus should make us more competitive than the current results show.

Hopefully the inclusion of Miller will help us make wiser decisions on recruiting the type of players that will give us hope for the future...but a future minus 1 individual.

I dont want to start the mantra of sack the coach routine but i have finally lost all faith in frawleys ability to coach and inspire the team and it's supporters.

We play an ugly brand of football......partly due to the players skill level, partly because many lack the poise and footy nous that engenders exciting and attractive football.

The question should be asked tho... is this partly due to the way which we are coached .

What does danny do to install confidence and self belief in the players mind? How is he able to manage and inspire players when the team is in a rut. And what skills does he have, to be able to turn things around when we have these slumps?

Based on 2002-2003 i would say he is found wanting.

Infact why cant he even get the team to impliment his so called gameplan come match day. Surely if players go outside that plan why dosn't he discipine them..... and even if he does why is the team condemed to repeat them?

I've grown tired of his excuses and uninspiring speeches about the players and clubs fortunes ......i just wish that he would do the honourable thing and fall on his sword and do whats best for the club as a whole .

Danny ....you might be honest and likeable as the day is long, but surely even you must be coming to the conclusion that you along with some of the playing list are not able to cut the mustard.

Im prepared to wear the flack for what after all is my opinion but i have finally had it. I want to see us proud and strong again.I want to see us have success.Im prepared to wait for that if we can snare a seasoned coach who we know will bring us this..... but frawley isn't the man.

The problem with landing a single Big Name recruit is just that - it is only a single player!!!! It also smacks of tinkering around the edges rather than the full-on cleanout that we needed.

I feel that the pressure placed on the club is stifling. Expectations have been - maybe unrealisticly - high and has only really served to compound our failures.

How would you take it all if the club came out and said straight up that it was rebuilding via a youth program? That it was going to trade up and gather a group of talented kids via the draft as St. Kilda have done.

I would be all for that as at least it provided a little hope, something that we have in precious little supply at the moment. It may also provide the space the club needs to move forward without the screaming pressure to make the finals.

The recruiting should start to pick up now because we have Greg Miller in that department, the contracts are getting better, after Daffy and Bourk left. So i said it's the players, there are too many players in the side that are not pulling there weight and are not hungry enough to get the ball on match day. There are a few exceptions, such as Couglan, but then theres your players like Houliahan Bowden and Pettifer, and more who should not be on the list next year.

I disagree here. I'm an advocate of early draft picks, but we should also go for quality trading. These two don't come into the same category of the mistakes we've made in the past, like Houlihan, Bidders, Fleming, Nichols. Those players were only recruited to add some depth to our list, not enhance it.

While the draft is a big gamble - and don't we know it - Lounder etc, if you get a chance to get quality kids like these, they're gonna be around the club for a long time - worth it to give up an early pick. But not for borderline players who can't make it at other clubs.

I don't think however we're gonna be a position to get anyone of note this year - we've got nothing to trade with unless we give away a player we don't want to give away :-(

In my opinion - two main issues.

1. List management, List management, List management.

2. Coach - has run his race

My belief is the most important function of a club is list management. Get the right folks on the field and even with poor coaching they will go okay. Richmond has been in the wilderness for 21 years (should have won the flag in '82 ) and have never taken a long term view with its list. Of recent years the Hudson, Houlihan and Bidders selections are examples. Also, playing David Bourke for 50+ games is an inditement.

Secondly, Danny has run his race. His defensive gameplan continues to frustrate me and I have little confidence he can take us where we need to go. Four years is long enough and I think it is time to move on. This issue of stability is a crock. If this is what matters, lets sign up Frawley for ten years and have ten wonderful years of stability and ignore our on-field performance.
