Look at Sydney. John Longmire has support and assistance from Dean Cox , Jarred McVeigh, Don Pyke and Tom Harley as head of footy. We need this calibre of people to support and challenge Beveridge.
And we still made a GF before them, since 2016. They might make one this year - and they might not.

Yeah that pressure rating in the last is horrendous.

Have to wonder if we have a fitness issue given our constant fade outs

Part of the problem with losing Duryea but not picking another defender is that it made it so inflexible to a) either play a loose man to protect the lead or b) get Richards to the wing or half-forward because they were clearly making an effort to isolate him deep in defence and put in work to stop him.

That's Bevo's stubbornness at play. Everyone has a role, we pick bad players because he plays "the role" and then when things don't go our way, we lack flexibility to change roles and do things different. Who gives a stuff that we don't normally float a loose in defence. Being 41 points up in a final is when you make the game miserable and you do.

Freo had the balls to pick Amiss for a 2nd game. We should have had the balls to pick someone like Cleary who could have done the same. Or pick Scott instead of Vandermeer who we could have floated to defence as Scott has done relatively often in his career.
This is no way a crack at the poster but the fact that we are debating Scott v VDM says it all about our list and it’s management since ’16 - and make no mistake this is Bevo’s list.

before this week, i couldnt even name a freo midfielder besides Mundy who is 45yo. Even without Libba.. Bont, Macrae, Dunkley, Treloar, Smith all should be better on paper.

West should have played the Clay Smith role and rotate as a mid for a few centre bounces. A bit of toughness and desperation to prove himself would have been nice to try when they got a run on. Next year he should be doing his every game.

I personally dont think its a fitness issue or that we didnt want to win.

I havent looked at the stats but our pressure rating would have been as bad in our previous match up at Marvel. Remember that game where everyone got angry about Freo players being everywhere with no resistance?

Imo its purely coaching tactics that Bevo hasnt solved since our previous game that was implemented better by Longmuir at half time.

We had 27 kicks into our forward 50 that didn’t target anyone, the AFL average is 15. Our forwards are simply just not leading.

Its a final. I dont believe that our forwards arent leading. Its moreso that after half time our mids were put under pressure so they long bombed non stop.

That only works if you have a forward that can mark 1 v 1 against their direct opponent or in a pack, but ours all got beat unfortunately.

We had control of the ball through our midfield, so we had to not give Freo what they wanted which is a fast game that tires out our players by slowing the pace of the game.

If we were able to slow the game or get numbers behind the ball it would have stopped Freo from moving the ball so quickly through midfield onto leads of their forwards.

I was at the game the intensity definitely dropped off after the first quarter where the side was proactive in defending this allowed Freo an extra metre of space exposing the side to Freo's extra speed and then you have the poor defensive tactics which don't allow the side to slow down fast breaks like Freo do. The side this year was setup in a way where it was only effective when the whole side was manic around the ball, which isn't sustainable across four quarters.

It has in there that Freo only scored 1 behind directly from a FK/50 and us 3.1.

Didn't O'Driscoll? Score a goal from that shitty HTB against Dunkley?

Not that it matters really

I do wonder whether 2016 was just a case of Bevo being the right man at the right moment. We simply have to robustly challenge his plans next year by bringing a strong, experienced footy manager to push back at some of his b’s**t.
Pardon the intrusion, but it's an interesting question. Seems like the consensus here is that the supporters want a change of coach. I was hoping for another dogs flag, as like North, we suffer from being "smaller clubs". You don't the free agents that Geelong, Collingwood or Richmond can attract, or the money and advantages that interstate teams get.

Bevo has a 56% win ratio, and is 7/12 in finals. You won the flag finishing 7th, then 10th, 13th, 7th, 7th, 5th and 8th.
Never finished in the top 4, yet made 2 grand finals, but pretty consistently in the next tier of clubs ranked 5-8.

I know we are never satisfied unless our teams win the flag, but I think your finals record is pretty good considering where you've finished, but are right to ask are you maximising your return on the generational talent of a few players. You've just about won more games in 3 months than my club has in 3 years. I hope you can keep Dunkley, and perhaps land a free agent to push you into the top 4. It's not all doom and gloom... (even for us who are back to back wooden spooners).
Best of luck for next season.

The frustration with bulldogs supporters is that the side should be finishing higher after the home and away season. To have not made the top four once after the home and away season with the talent the club’s had isn’t good enough.

Treloar has been disappointing this year. I know his time with us has been short but he is an experienced senior player and imo should be more of a leader ( both by voice and example) on the field.
Even ignoring the Pies contribution to his salary I don’t think he has earned his salary this year. Include it and he is having a laugh.

Seems to have lost a step and is definitely not playing in his most impactful position. I can’t recall too many times where he burst through picking up a handball receive from 70-80m out and booted the ball to the top of the square.

Weightman kicks his bag 2 or 3 times a year then goes missing.

Id rather a solid goal or 2 a game plus pressure work inside 50 and roving.

He needs some direction.
100%, seems like there no base performance minimum with Cody as there should be with those small forwards, i.e. it can be a hard position to get the ball consistently, but as long as you’re tackling, adding pressure etc.

He’s effectively an undersized full forward at present, which we certainly don’t need.

His role frustrates me and it needs changing (play like a small ffs).

As a footballer, he’s as talented as anyone in that position, just being poorly used.

Bevo has had such control over the club since ‘16 that this is not only his team but his list. You recruit the man and player- he didn’t recruit leaders.

Aside from that his list management has been shocking. It’s time to trade English on and a list turnover. There is a youngish midfielder playing for the Pies, speedy and silky, I think he could give us some run. We could try and recruit him- Patrick Lipinkski…..
Speedy?

I agree. In the swans game, when they kicked it to their talls, there were like 2-3 Swans players going after the crumb to goal.

In our game, I only saw Freo defenders going for the crumb and our smalls jumping or trying to stop the Freo defenders. Your job is to hunt the ball as it hits the deck as smalls :D

I’m a fan of Bevo, but I don’t think he’s going to hang around as long as some think.
He’s heart lies deep down at Moorabbin, and he’s end destiny will be to coach there. My guess is that’s where he will be in 2024, whether we fire or roll over next year.
He’s a deep passionate man.

As for the team, we can fix the backline. It’s the midfield where the problems lie. It’s good, it’s deep, but it’s a long way from the best in the league. We need to recruit a couple of young, modern midfielders. Keep it fresh, a bit of spark, a bit of pace, some hunger to get that hard ball. Hunger to make your mark in the game.
OFFS?. You think more mids will fix our problems........are you bevo?

Not sure if that's true, I noticed Bont directing traffic a lot and even the commentators mentioned it. Problem is there is hardly any support, who are our other leaders right now? The fact that guys like Hunter and Macrae have been vice captains shows a big gulf in leadership between Bont and the next group of leaders imo.
Meanwhile you hardly ever see guys like Macrae or Hunter directing team mates. We missed Libba badly imo, he's basically our spiritual vice captain.

Can see where you're coming from in regards to Hunter, but you're way off with Macrae. I think we get blinded by how much of the ball he gets and by how little media he does, but if you watch him when he doesn't have the ball, he is always shouting and or giving instructions and has done for years.

I remember in a 2018 game when we were getting smashed, Brad Lynch didn't put his hands up while standing the mark for an easy shot at goal and Jack went over to him to let him know that you have to regardless. Even last night I can recall at least a handful of times he was instructing the play.

He's been highly rated internally as a leader and has been for a long time even though this is his first year as VC. Go and watch any of the Roaming Brian's from this year and you'll see him make his way around to every player to check in.

“Dan, your sales team missed budget by 70% this quarter, what did you find in your review?”

“Nah, i’m not reviewing that sh*t mate”
