Analysis Rolling All-Australian team for 2021

CP5 is a lock. Fuggedabowdit. As is May at FB. Another 25 clean touches and 14 marks today. Leads the stingiest defence in the league and has taken down every big KPF scalp put in front of him.

Weitering makes May’s coffee and shines his shoes at this stage.

Weitering is better defensively, whilst May is better offensively (though his stats are inflated by taking the majority of kickins). There is room for both. Doesn't have to be one or the other.

Tippa is in the side imo, having a massive year. Him and Greene would be the smalls if picked right now

Gawn, Martin and Petracca are probably the only true locks at this point.

Depends on how you define a lock. If we are talking end of the season, nobody would be anywhere near a lock yet. If we are talking the team as of round 7 I would think Gawn, Macrae, Walsh, Oliver, Bontompelli, Walker, McKay, Petracca
Greene would all be pretty close to locks.

I actually wouldn't have Martin in the team at the moment. Been pretty average since round 2.

wrong, was good against port , almost won us the game against port in the last qtr with his goal and against saints he would be around the brownlow voting.

you guys are holding him to his standard that he sets in grand finals. his 80% is still A grade

Kosi Pickett would be my AA FP so far.

If there was a stat for 10% chances turned into goals, he'd be leading it so far right now for me. Maybe Tex who has been great at creating opportunities but otherwise it's Pickett.

If picked to position I'd say there's room for Pickett as well.

Something like
HF: Greene, Walker, Dusty/Bont
F: Pickett, McKay, Tippa

Hooker, Riewoldt just off it. Having said that a small forward will miss out to have both Dusty and Bont or similar.

Stats wise Pickett is
=4th for tackles inside 50
=11th for score involvements (2nd for small/medium forwards, pretty much everyone else above him is a star and in contention for AA KF or midfield spots)
=20th for goal assists (4th for small forwards)
=16th for goals (=3rd for small forwards).

Greene the only medium/small to be ahead of him in more than 1 category - for example Tippa is ahead in goals but not GA, tackles inside 50 or score involvements, Cripps ahead in tackles but not the others etc.

Think when you combine those stats where he's a top 4 or 5 small forward in every category when only 1 other is, and that he turns half chances into goals weekly, he has a strong case.

Yeah no Trac has been fine but there’s plenty of good midfielders in the competition who’ve been more consistent, including Oliver.
Has polled in 5 out of 6 games in the coaches votes

That is pretty ******* consistant

There's a lot of what ifs in your statement bud. If Gold Coast hadn't kicked it to Keath, if Dogs hadn't kicked 100 points so many times, if May hadn't got injured.

There are lots of different rating systems mate. Here's one from the AFL site that has Keath in front;

My point is, there are those making out as if May is an A grade superstar and Keath is just a B grade plodder. Whatever way you look at it that's just not the case. They are actually pretty close in comparison.

And using one missed spoil in an attempt to strengthen your argument is pathetic. Look at the game as a whole.

Please note where Keath was rated in contrast to his direct opponent in Jack Riewoldt.

Can we move on now? I've made my point and Dees supporters have made theirs. Both guns and both having outstanding seasons.
Please also note that by these stats that Zaine Cordy gave Tom Lynch a bath too

I think the Ins and Outs are fairly solid. Would personally update Carlton from 2X to 3X, IMO.

Really hope Mundy makes it for the storyline.

A measure of how well he’s travelling when 23 touches, 8 clearances, 8 score involvements and 539 metres gained is coming across as a bit ‘meh’ and disappointing to some.

He did seem a little off today, as did most of Melbourne’s big name players, but he also clean ripped the ball out of opponents’ hand at least three times. What would normally be a ball up turned into a break away - those impact things don’t show up on the stats sheet (maybe they do as clearances). He makes things happen.
What you'll find is that teams struggle a little the week after playing Richmond. Win,lose or draw it is usually a tough physical game and hard to recover from.

My current team would look like:

FB: Jake Lever (Mel) - Steven May (Mel) - Tom Stewart (Gee)
HB: Jayden Short (Ric) - Sam Taylor (GWS) - Christian Salem (Mel)
MF: Sam Walsh (Car) - Marcus Bontempelli (WB) - Hugh McCluggage (Bri)
HF: Toby Greene (GWS) - Taylor Walker (Ade) - Christian Petracca (Mel)
FF: Anthony McDonald-Tipungwuti (Ess) - Harry McKay (Car) - Jack Riewoldt (Ric)
OB: Max Gawn (Mel) - David Mundy (Fre) - Travis Boak (PA)
IC: Jack Steele (StK) - Oliver Wines (PA) - Cameron Guthrie (Gee) - Jackson Macrae (WB)

Cute chart. But I’m going with the dominant fullback in the stingiest backline in the comp. As would 17 current AFL coaches.

It may well be a cute chart but it certainly paints a picture re: who is miles ahead of the others when it comes to 1v1's.

Not it's not all about 1v1's and May is absolutely worthy of the spot. The comment...Weitering makes May’s coffee and shines his shoes at this stage...is foolhardy at best though.

Interesting that you demoted Pickett after a round in which he received coaches votes.

Other than goals (18 to 14) he has McDonald-Tipungwuti covered in most other categories.

But I agree it's probably a flip of the coin.
