How big will the squad be? I was assuming 16 but the last squad in 2015 was 17. If it is 17, then I'd add either Handscomb or Maddinson to my original group. As good as SMarsh has been in Shield and ODI, I think we need to move on:

D.Warner
M.Harris
C.Bancroft
S.Smith
J.Burns
K.Patterson
T.Paine + c
P.Cummins vc
M.Starc
N.Lyon
J.Hazelwood

J.Richardson
J.Bird
M.Wade +
S.O'Keefe
W.Pukovski
Handscomb/Maddinson

Hey l completly agree with what you said in regards to Head and flaws. I also think he will be found out, however he deserves to be playing and definitly in the squad as he has been our best and most consistent run scorer this summer. A fe others that are more likely to be out (Khawaja et.)

Plenty of bats for openers so that isn't the problem but more thinking along the lines of reserves middle order players. L suppose you ould say Bancroft and Burns could play in the middle order if required but if they are the openers and have found form there you don't want to move them. Need someone like a Handscomb who is a specialist middle order player (l am not saying we need him but someone who specialises in the middle order)
Wade is only 1 player and l think there needs to be a bigger sample size than 1 FC match for Wade as this was his 1st match in the middle order. Got a 70 odd but only 15 the next innings.
I have Pukovski in my original post as a reserve middle order bat. It's unlikely he'd play, but he's certainly capable of playing if necessary.

He has a huge upside and needs to be around the set-up (providing his health is ok). Great young batsman.

It looks like I am the only one that has Maxwell in the ashes squad at the moment.
Should be in there. It cannot happen though due to the scheduling and almost direct sabotaging in regards to his long form opportunities. Needs to make a ****load of runs in County though i still dont like his chances even if that were to eventuate

WHY As far as I am concerned he is in the top 6 best batsman in Australia test cricket wise but you are all writing him off because mainly he has not played test, shield cricket for over 6 months.A huge talent and I fear will be wasted talent.

A bit off topic, but I saw this shared on Facebook by a mate in SA. Interview with Maxy Klinger. How did never got a baggy is beyond me.

https://www.oneononesportssa.com.au/one-on-one-with-michael-klinger/

Personally, my Ashes XI looks like this:

Burns
Harris
Khawaja
Smith
Head
Patterson
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Hazelwood
Lyon

Bancroft ahead of Warner for a recall for mine. I'd love to see Maxwell in there, but the selectors really haven't given him a chance to mount a red ball case. Smith walks back in when fit.

Klinger is the most overrated player never to don the Baggy Green. Bloke has a FC average of under 40 and so many people are baffled by the fact he never played for Australia behind blokes like Chris Rogers, David Warner, Phil Jaques and Phil Hughes

39.3 is really getting technical. He had multiple 1000+ run Shield seasons. If someone was putting up those numbers now they'd walk into the Australian Test team
Is it under 40? Yes. So not really technical. All the players I mentioned, plus guys like Simon Katich and Ed Cowan, had career FC averages over 40. Of the players he was competing with, he wasn't unlucky never to get a Baggy Green. He was a good FC player, nothing more, nothing less. But seriously, let's not pretend he was Jamie Siddons or Michael Di Venuto.

Would need a huge County season to even be an outside chance. Lets look at the batsmen.

Harris- probably goes
Burns- goes as the backup bat in all likelihood, can bat anywhere.
Warner- certianty
Smith- certainty
Khawaja- I don't love it but he'll be there after his hundred against SL
Patterson- in form and has hundreds, including one in the last test
SMarsh- probably not, but in the mix unfortunately.
Stoinis/Laubausghne- One goes as the AR (Personally I wouldn't be taking one but I know these selectors).
Renshaw- had a stellar County season last year, probably doesn't go but he'd be in the mix
Bancroft- in he mix definitely can see them taking him.

That is a lot of batsmen and you can see why they won't pick Maxwell and that's not even considering guys like Wade, etc. It's a 16 or 17 man squad, just call it 16 as the 17th is the spare keeper (Carey probably)

Not an easy job at this stage.I still have doubts on Laubausghne and would put Maxwell in front of him.Stoinis no,Khawaji not sure.Would a surprise selection be Maddison.

Shoot me now if Maddinson is there, please no we went down that path before. As I said I wouldn't pick an all rounder but the selectors will I just know it. They are more likely to take an extra quick as well as quicks can break down easier. Khawaja will be there, his hundred in the last test has saved him, he bats well with Smith too and it will allow Smith to not have to bat 3 where he isn't as comfortable as he prefers 4.

Can we take much out of that series against a very ordinary Sri Lanka attack.I reckon you could of got runs against them.

He was really only consistent in his mid to late 30s and by then it was too late. Had far to many dreadful seasons mixed in with the good ones early on which is why his average was in the mid 30s for most of it. I can't think of a single time where his selection would've been warranted but he was hard done by, there were either younger players with similar records available or players his age with far better records. Good FC player, especially later on who just wasn't going to be Test standard. Glad he got to play for Australia eventually though.

SL have just beaten South Africa they aren’t hopeless.

Runs are runs especially test ones. The selectors won’t make too many changes from a side that has just won. That’s just the way it is.

Good point, was it the same attack that bowled against Australia as they looked out of their depth here.
Not completely sure on their attack but I think it was fairly similar from memory at least.

My point is I doubt there will be more than a few changes. The three banned players plus Hazelwood are inclusions in some way shape or form. Can see Bancroft missing but being in the squad though. It’s either him or Burns probably opening.

You do realise people can improve, yeah? Maddinson is in the middle of a purple patch.

Reckon Renshaw and Labuschagne have batted themselves out of a spot.

If runs are runs why do we lose to almost every competent opponent overseas? Trouble is everyone calls for change before the summer starts but as soon as we win a couple of easy games Australia "is back!" apparently and it's business as usual.

Need to make hard calls if we're going to be a chance in England and focusing more on Shield/County runs over a Test against Sri Lanka is part of that.

I think Renshaw is in trouble as much as I'd like to see him in England, Bancroft was improving when he was banned and he's got English experience, I'd honestly be backing him over Harris who I think should have to do a bit more to stay in the team with his poor batting against Sri Lanka, he really didn't look Test quality there.

Burns is another who I don't mind going over there as a reserve but who I don't think is in our best XI with all the banned players back. I think with Patterson scoring a Shield hundred along with his other good work along with Head continuing to be in the runs the batting looks pretty settled. Starc also needs to be dropped for the first Test, isn't in our best XI on bowler friendly wickets but I have a feeling they won't learn from past mistakes.

Right now for the first Test I'd be going

Warner
Bancroft
Khawaja
Smith
Head
Patterson
Paine
Cummins
Lyon
Richardson/Bird
Hazlewood

For reserves we take over, I'd take Wade as a back up bat and or keeper, Starc who'll hopefully be useful on the flatter wickets, Holland as the back up spinner, Burns/Harris as the reserve opener and if we need another bowler probably Siddle or Sayers.

Do I expect that XI? Probably not. I think they'll play it safe and one of Burns or Harris will play and I think they'll play Starc in every Test match regardless of form.

On the subject of Maddinson, great to see him having a good year but he shouldn't be near the Test team. He's someone who's finally on track to make the most of his talent in long form cricket after being closed to not playing at all, should still be a season away.

Yeah wouldn’t want to pick Maddinson, why pick a bloke who can make hundreds? Better to stick with the guys who can’t...

Pick players off 1 good practice match performance after years of underperforming but it would be terrible to consider someone who has just hit his 3rd consecutive ton from just 3 games this year, more than any other batsman who have played all 8 games!!!

And Callum Ferguson is the most overrated bloke who 'should've played more test cricket'. People talk like he knocked out 1000 run Shield seasons constantly.

As for Maddinson, it's good to see him making runs but you just couldn't do it. The Australia A tour for sure and if he makes runs maybe let him stick around but let's not forget he got cut from NSW less than 12 months ago.
