There is no way Handscomb or Bancroft can be seriously considered for a back up keeper. The only way they should keep in tests is if they're in the side and Paine goes down in the middle of a match.
I think Wade should be the back up personally as he is in good form with the bat and could easily be played as a batsman only. But i suspect the selectors will go for Bancroft as we all know how much Langer loves him.

Instead of picking a squad of 17, i picked the australia vs australia a teams that will be used as the warm up game before the ashes.
Warner
Harris
Khawaja
Smith
Labuschagne
Head
Paine
Cummins
Richardson
Lyon
Hazlewood

Renshaw
Burns
Patterson
Maxwell
Handscomb/Bancroft/ Wade( playing for b/u w/k)
Pucovski
Stoinis
Starc
Pattinson
Tremain
Holland
Have left out Both Marsh boys, siddle and Finch as i think there are better option available. Although there is a high chance S Marsh will be there.

could warner and smith play for "Australia A" in this game perhaps ? we both know they both walk into the main aussie team.
give them a hit against our pace attack and also gives the other batsmen to "bat off" for a position.

Agree. What we have now is 'Australia' and in theory Warner and Smith should be earning their spot back (which they will).

How about this.
Early April-Late May- Get as many people playing county cricket as possible
World Cup- 7 Test Players (Smith, Warner, Hazlewood, Starc, Cummins, Stoinis, Richardson)
During World Cup- 17 man A Squad play 4 or 5 Four Day Matches. Early exit of World Cup means World Cup players back into the A Squad.
Between World Cup and Ashes- Australia A play Australia
Ashes- 17 man Squad wins the series and the 7 exclusive A players hang around for backup

“When we go to England there are guys that are bowling well, the Chris Tremains, Dan Worrells and Peter Siddles who can swing the ball to complement Josh Hazlewood, Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Jhye Richardson - and there’s James Pattinson,” Paine said.

I wonder where Patto fits into all this now with jhye in contention

I think the fast bowlers are sorted - they'll only take 5. Cummins and Hazlewood are guaranteed, Starc is shaky, but there's only one more test left and I don't think that's enough to play him out of contention, plus they love the variety of a left hander. Richardson has shown plenty and they haven't dragged Siddle around the world for the past 4 months to not take him to England where he's performed well in County Cricket.

he (Patto) doesn't fit if he can't stay on the park

I'm saying it'll get interesting if he can (and I know that's a big if) stay fir + get some good form.
I know the injuries are not comparable but after the start that cummins had... still hopeful pattinson can make a return

Cummins
Richardson
Hazlewood
Starc
Pattinson

That is quite the pace arsenal isn’t it! All of them can bat pretty well too.

Long way to go before we start the ashes but I’d be looking at the following as a potential starting XI;

Warner
Harris
Labuschagne
Smith
Head
Patterson
Paine
Cummins
Starc
Richardson
Lyon

I think Warner replacing Burns is a fair call. Unless Burns does plenty between now and then and starting against SL. Khawaja is the out for me based on form, he has had a terrible summer.

Labuschagne and Head look to have done ok, although I am still worried about Head’s form. He was dropped 3-4 times in the first test was it? Just don’t know if he has good long form technique.

Patterson has a test technique and has to stay, and Richardson quite frankly can’t be ignored with his ability to shape the ball at speed and bowl brilliant lengths.

I personally wouldn't have either Khawaja or Smarsh in my squad. Danger is that they both have a habit of turning it on in Shield cricket. Then they s**t the bed when it comes to tests.

Bancroft’s a pretty tidy keeper, if he has good Shield form, I could see him going with a view to filling in in event of an emergency. If Paine actually went down long term, they would simply fly someone in. I don’t think we need a back-up keeper in this day and age but we definitely need to stock up on our bats.

Neither Bancroft nor Handscomb actually keep in Shield cricket though, and haven't really done so for ages. They're primarily T20 keepers, and even then, more stop-gap than quality with the gloves.

yeah he was crap...still better keeper than handscomb :)

Both are not and should not be keeping in a test match! We will take a second specialist keeper and that will be Alex Carey.

We should be including Wade in the squad. Can keep if needed, and is the most in-form batsman (leading the Shield run table, #2 on the BBL run table) in Australia right now.

Wade keeping again...please no. The horror last time. No issues with Wade in there as a specialist bat

I agree just saying Bancroft is a better keeper than handscomb :)

Both are are useless as anything. Might as well have glorified backstops because that’s their keeping abilities
