Rolling World Cup squad thread

The squad we pick needs to be capable of covering short term injuries and allow for adjustment for conditions. You’ve got to think our standard team will be four specialist bats, two all rounders, one keeper, three quicks and a spinner.

Few big questions for me:
- Can Warner and Smith come straight back?
- If Warner comes back can Khawaja bat elsewhere?
- Is Handscomb an adequate back up glove man and if no - do we need one?
- Do we need back up for Marcus Stoinis? If yes, is the form of Mitch Marsh good enough to take him to a World Cup? His career statistics certainly show he’s good enough.
- Will Starc be at his best? May need to consider more back up options for pace bowlers if no.
- Can Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins play in the same side?
- Who’s a better limited overs bowler Hazlewood or NCN, Jhye Richardson and Behrendorff?
- Who bowls at the depth?
- Is two spinners a realistic option? If no, is no spinners a realistic option?

For me the answers are:
- Yes. We took Clarke and Faulkner into the 2015 WC underdone. Faulkner won MOTM in the final - which Clarke probably should’ve won.
- Yes, but S.Marsh is a better option at three and I can’t see Khawaja batting much lower.
- Yes, but only because it’s not worth wasting a squad spot on someone else.
- Yes. I’d take the risk and pick Mitch Marsh if he shows any sort of form in the next few shield games.
- Probably not but we’ll take the risk.
- Probably not - certainly hasn’t worked the last 18 months.
- For me Hazlewood and Behrendorff don’t offer enough towards the end and for that reason J.Richardson and NCN are ahead for me.
- I genuinely think it may be an option. Probably more likely than four quicks so I’m picking two spinners.

Finch, Warner, S.Marsh, Smith, Maxwell, Stoinis, Carey, NCN, Cummins, Starc, Zampa, Handscomb, M.Marsh, J.Richardson, Lyon.

Khawaja's ODI record is actually pretty good opening the batting- 46.33 @ 86, albeit with a smallish sample size. Any chance he replaces Finch if he doesn't get his act together?

Otherwise cricketnut14's squad is what I think they'll go with.

Well that was absolutely phenomenal by Turner, absolutely freakish. He is destructive and can score absolutely everywhere, he and Maxwell have to be in the side to bring chases home or hit the accelerator. I’m convinced, that has left me speechless. You can’t leave it all to Maxwell and Turner has it, wow.

Handscomb can keep if you really want Stoinis because in my opinion, Turner could win his side the WC.

That would mean you go into a World Cup with a brand new captain, so no I don’t think Khawaja will take Finch’s spot
No point going in with 10 men and a beach ball either. It's a tough decision but if Warner and Smith come back the experience is there, not saying either should be captain though; think that should be maxwell

Yep, I’d assume you’ve nailed it.

I’d say NCN would rival Hazlewood for that first XI spot and Behrendorff will go as insurance for Starc if he goes down. I don’t think Lyon makes it as it isn’t in Asia and a second spinner won’t be required. I do wonder though if the selectors will want to risk both Hazlewood and Starc coming back from long-term injury lay offs. I actually wouldn’t be surprised if Hazlewood was an unlucky omission as you aren’t leaving out Starc with a record like he has. Plus, NCN isn’t a downgrade on Josh anyway, plus he offers lower order hitting.

I’d imagine both Khawaja and Handscomb go, Turner is just a placeholder I’d think, not even really in consideration.

So long story short, I think Hazlewood might miss out altogether with NCN in the first XI and J.Richardson and The Dorff going in spots 14 and 15.
Your like reverse nostradamus kawaja, handscomb and Turner all to go lol.

1. Warner
2. Khawaja
3. S Marsh
4. Smith
5. Handscomb (wk)
6. Maxwell
7. Stoinis
8. Cummins
9. Starc
10. Zampa
11. Hazelwood

12. Carery
13. Turner
14. Coulter-Nile
15. Richardson

Stoinis and Hazlewood currently on the fringes of the XI.

wow @ last night.

turner gets a game because of an injury to stoinis and delivers.

the last 2 odi's khawaja and handscomb have made their 1st odi tons.

makes things interesting now.

still think its a case of putting 19 into 15 (current squad plus warner/smith/starc/hazlewood - if fit).

i think carey on the bench is a wasted position.

he either plays in the XI or frees up a spot on the bench for another player.

ps. who's the captain of that squad ?

The current squad is 16 players, or 17 players if you include Kane Richardson who was initially selected.

Players performing and asking a lot of selectors, which is a good thing. I don't think you can play Khawaja and SMarsh once Warner and Smith are back, Khawaja is in fine form, but SMarsh has been the form ODI player of the last year. I wouldn't have had Handscomb in the team, but he's delivering, and Turner just put his name forward. Hard calls will have to be made.

The hard call is that Finch should not have been retained as captain, and should have been dropped. Then he made a good 93 in the 3rd ODI, which buys him some time (selected for the Pakistan series, and retained as captain) and makes dropping him more difficult.

But if Khawaja, Handscomb, Maxwell and Turner continue in their good/great form, and Finch doesn't improve, then he needs to be dropped. The best way to put him on notice is to make someone else captain of the team.

Ideally, based on current form, you'd have Khawaja open and SMarsh at three, dropping Finch. But we don't live in ideal times, there's no obvious captain and for that reason alone, Finch will be retained. I don't like it, but I'm not making any predictions where Finch isn't captain and playing in the World Cup.

still another series and 6 games to go...form can change pretty quickly...still a bit early to pick our starting lineup for the WC..

the trick is picking the guys who are in form

fantastic that usman handscomb and turner made runs last night.....that's what you want

team starting to gel :)

it also comes down to conditions

handscomb good against spin....suspect against the moving/seaming ball...

pick a squad that can adapt to the conditions....which I think the selectors are doing

ODI pitches in England are different test pitches. You will be facing 20+ overs of spin. I'd rather Handscomb there than a few. Having Smith, Handscomb, and Maxwell who all play spin well in the middle order forces teams to not bowl spinners where they want to

Yes and no...its not the subcontinent.. yes some pitches will be drier than others....but its England it will seam and swing....pick the team to suit the conditions...that's what I think the selectors are banking on...we have the squad and assets to exploit the conditions

if its dry we go for two spinners handscomb is considered

if its wet we play a traditional team..3 quicks one spinner allrounder.....handscomb not considered :)

Have you actually watched ODI cricket in England in the last say 3-4 years? Their side is all about big scores, flat as anything pitches. Spinners will play a massive holding role. It's not going to swing around bar the first few overs. They want pitches that help their side which include Hales, Buttler, etc who feast on flat pitches.

The amount of times I've heard commentators over in England say "it's going to swing" in a ODI in the last 2 years...and it doesn't. Pitches are just very different to what they produce in a test match.

That's fine, the flatter the more it helps us.

I agree that it's very unlikely he will be dropped before the end of the World Cup.
Which means that at least two of Khawaja, Handscomb, S Marsh, Maxwell and Turner will miss out. Of those five, only S Marsh has played poorly in the current India series. Looks like some interesting/tough selection choices will need to be made when Warner and Smith are back for the World Cup.

Going to be very interesting going into the World Cup. Khawaja and Handscomb would have been the favourites to be replaced with Warner and Smith prior to this series. Khawaja is averaging 56 since coming back into the side, Handscomb averaging 48 with a SR of 98 since his return. Going to be a big call to drop either now if their form continues through the Pakistan series.

Yes luke I understand what England is trying to do ..produce roads to suit there batting line up....6 and out that's how they play and they will suffer from it come the knockout stages

We adapt to the conditions.....not all the pitches are going to be flat as.....this is England not the subcontinent.....there will be cloud cover rain...the ball will swing...we have the bowlers to exploit it

As I said previously if it is dry and flat we pick the team most suited to those conditions
