spare me if guys like Bell and Micky O are getting nominated in front of the legendary Ron Todd. It is a disgrace on our Club's board that they refuse to nominate Todd for the Hall of Fame. All over a petty feud after he left the Club to play for Williamstown (for 10 times the amount of money Collingwood were paying him).
This smacks of a throwback to the bad old days of the club when the likes of the Coventrys and McHales wielded way too much power. Eddie - time for you to right this wrong if you want Collingwood to be the Club for the people, and not just the Club for a few chosen families.

Shouldn't Williamstown be nominating him then?

There's plenty of Collingwood premiership players who played over 200 games who aren't in the hall of fame yet, maybe, just maybe the club (and it's got s**t all to do with Eddie) is nominating Collingwood life members before those who only played a few seasons, no matter how good they were.

Todd will get in, but there's plenty of others that we can nominate ahead of him who have their name on Pies lockers at the club.

DO VFA Player get in the AFL Hall of Fame?

the Pies would have more than 15 flags if he and was it Des Fothergill or Marcus Whelan had not left.
Todd would have been a massive chance to beat Coventry,s record judging by the number of goals he kicked at Williamstown. He must have played more than 2 seasons to kick the number of goals he did.

I knew a certain few posters would jump to the defence of the club with this case. It really is undefendable though. The guy has the 4th best goal average of all time in the AFL. The 3 above him are not just in the Hall of Fame, they are in the 26 legends. And he played a lot more than 2 seasons for Collingwood Trade Draft. And 700 goals in the VFA in those days (Including 180 in one year) was worth a lot more than currently, as it was a very high standard league.
Eddie and his Board decide who the Club nominates for consideration. It is on his head. Eddie was also on the Collingwood Team of the Century committee which decided to replace Todd with Weidemann on the insistence of Jock McHale Jnr. It is an indictment on our club which needs to be fixed. Yesterday.

Fothergill. 5 seasons at Collingwood for Todd. Absolute disaster for the club to lose those two. Todd certainly does belong in the HoF.

Problem he only played 2 Years for Collingwood and He was around Pre-TV Times
Played 5 seasons , 1st 3 was CHF and last 2 FF (120 and 121 goals). 76 games. Agree he should be in the HOF.

How many seasons did he play ff because Coventry was still there when he started and yes you are right he probably should be in the HoF.

It's actually the Australian Football Hall of Fame, not the AFL Hall of Fame. So yes, state league players are eligible.

Rick Davies, for example, was inducted a couple of years ago...

There's no doubt they need to look more closely at the players from yesteryear, too many recent retirees (like Bell and O'Loughlin) who were merely in the "very good player" category have made it. Mark Bickley wasn't even up to that level!

Yep, if his Collingwood career is not deemed sufficient to make the Hall of Fame then a) It should be, and b) His Williamstown career should make up any shortfall. His tally of 188 goals in 1945 is still a state league record I believe.

Yeah there's too much recent bias and I reckon the likes of Bickley and Bell were selected so newer clubs would have representatives sooner. Personally think they should have waited and made Pavlich Fremantle's first.

There's a lot of players from Collingwood who should already be in and Todd is one. That Todd was the initial choice for CHF in our team of the century says everything about where he should rank. His VFA achievements are also significant, although it's interesting that both the VFA and state leagues were changing rules around that time. For the VFA, with different rules to other state leagues, it meant some huge goal totals were kicked when throwing was allowed.

Don't worry, he is in line for nomination. Apparently we've reserved a spot for him in the queue just after Jason Wild

Maybe we should start our own Hall of Fame.

(But seriously, let's be honest- if we did, more people would probably pay attention to it than the AFL one. We'd be front and back page 'Daicos Legend' whilst the AFL one would make it four pages from the back...)

Collingwood's Dick Lee was the League's Leading Goalkicker an incredible 10 times. He's in the Hall of Fame, but surely should be strongly considered for Legend status with that record. Gordon Coventry is second on the Leading Goalkicker list with 6, and is a Legend, as are Coleman, Hudson and Lockett (all 4 wins), along with Pratt (3). Dunstall (3) will almost certainly become one soon enough. All of them were obviously truly great players but I wonder about the fairness of it all.

Sadly for Lee, he played in a very low scoring era (and a now mostly forgotten one), and that is always likely to count against him.

He is before TV Time and before the Voters where Born.

So it makes it hard for Lee to make it as a Legend

Some would point out that e.g. Lockett had to compete with the likes of Ablett and Dunstall, while Hudson had outstanding rivals in McKenna and Wade, but it's hardly Lee's fault that he was so much better than the rest when he played.

Bump -

Todd named in the AFL Hall of Fame last night. A well deserved recognition of his career, pity he didn't finish his career at Collingwood (he tried), but that doesn't affect his significant contribution to aussie rules.

EDIT:

In addition to his 188 goals with Williamstown in 1945 VFA season he also kicked another 82 goals that year (6 Williamstown in Broken Hill, 10 Victoria in Broken Hill, 9 RAAF in Tasmania, 57 RAFF Sunday comp) for a total of 270!

Super star player.
Elite.

A type like him to assist Moore (or is Moore to assst him) would be very handy indeed
