Can anyone out there tell me a bit more about how Ronnie Davis is travelling this year at Calder?

Saw him play last year a number of times and I'm a big fan. Played mainly at half back and spent some time in the middle. I know he made U/16 Vic metro and is in this years under 18 metro squad.

Haven’t heard much this year, I’m guessing because there is so much talent to talk about down there.

Would like to know if he is playing more in the middle this year?
Hoping to get to their next home game to have a look at Calder but I’m not sure when the players start being rested for metro, so I may miss him and most of his teamates.

I was at the Cannons v Rebels game 12 days ago. Was very surprised that Ronnie was still being played off the half back flank. I thought he would develop into an inside midfielder this year.

I know there is plenty of talent down there at Calder, and a host of players could play in the midfield, but it seems there are players ahead of him to start in there (eg. J D Smith, May).

He was a Vic Metro last year so I guess he'll be there again.

He's fairly solid and can run all day. I'll be keen to keep watching if he's improved his accountability this year though.

I know GOALden was at Morwell on Sunday so maybe he can add more.

come to think of it boys, last year hartigan started making a move on as the vic trials were on and the majority of the cannons players had been selected to play in vic metro, only then did he start to pick up in his game to star 4 weeks in a row, built up his confidence heaps and ended up winning b&f for calder, and got himself drafted playing hbf and occasionally wing at end of year. maybe we could see ronnie davis doing the same kind of thing? i think these days its all a confidence thing especially when the cannons have soo many depth in there midfield. what do you think boys? also do u think the kid could have a chance this year especially after having such a stella year as a bottom age? i heard he came 5th in b&f or something?????

Yeah, fair point bringing up the Brent Hartigan example.

Last year Hartigan averaged 14 possessions in the first 9 games of the home and away season, up to 23 in the last 9 games of the home and away season and about 20 in the four finals games. So yeah, I agree that he definately improved his run off half back as the season went on and definately gained confidence to pick the right time to run off his man. He also beat some highly rated opponents.

I still think he showed his strengths far better than Ronnie Davis does though at the moment. I would have thought you'd rate things like Hartigan's ability to play taller, to arch the back with explosive pace in his first few steps and to hit targets under pressure fairly highly at TAC level.

Ronnie Davis stats for the year are fairly good so far, he is a good size and has Vic Metro U18 experience already. But I think he has a few things to work on still. And I'd also like to see how he goes on ball.

heres a dilemma for yas:
would ronnie davis be a better draft chance if he played at a club ohter than calder, where midfield chances are limited?? if he were at northern, western or nearly other club he would be a fulltime onballer. what do you blokes think??

maybe, but calder rotate their players a lot anyway. so you could look at it and say their strength at calder allows them to expose more players in various positions to give them greater exposure.

say with dale may as an example - at western he would probably play onball fulltime, but at calder he gets exposed in the midfield and in the forward line. in fact, he has shown some ability inside their forward 50. so that would help his draft chances wouldnt it?

say with brent hartigan last year - generally used as a back flanker so you knew he could contain an opponent, but he also got limited time in the midfield to show that he had ball winning ability and some attacking attributes. at any other tac cup club he probably would have spent far more time in the midfield and then no one would have seen his defensive game which could well be one of the main reasons he was drafted.

i saw brent gordon and ryan hurst in at some centre bounces the other day, but i dont think ronnie davis even contested one, and that surprises me because having seen a lot of calder the last few years they do love to rotate their players.

its a good question raider, i will be interested to see other people think.

guys i get down a few times to see the cannons play during the year, i saw ron play against gippsland i think over at morwell and last year in vic metro in the first game against SA he snagged a running goal from 50m as a backman which lead me to believe that he runs and runs all day and his attacking side of game is strength. i believe he does have the talent to play wing which would suit his game definately, i saw him get moved to wing against gippsland in the last quarter and he carved em up i think he got 11 touches in the last quarter from wing, kicked a backmans goal and kept his opponent goaless, practicarly stripped him from any possies for the day. now apparently the calder board said that they would move him round like they did with hartigan later in the second half of the season to wing. if this occurs i think we might see the better side of ronnie davis.

to be honest boys do you think when ron had a great 2003 season and didnt get called up for even a screening that it had to do with clubs trying to keep things quiet for a snatch pick in 04 honestly would there be any kind of secret like that at all cause it beats me???? your opions please.......

davis

Ron Jon is a good footballer and i hope to see him play well and get a chance on the list. He is big and strong and runs the lines well, he should play VIC and alot will depend on how he goes in the carnival.
If Ronnie is able to add another string to his bow (kicking some more goals laying big hit etc etc) then we might just end up seeing him on a list.
My personal opinion is that maybe he wont get picked up in the national draft but iw ould think rookie list would almost be certain!!!.
Good luck mate from you know who :p

cheers ;)
