I think I can speak for all Roo fans in saying that we think he's a really nice person.At family days,after games and at training you couldn't meet a nicer bloke. Carey is a good footballer and I don't believe for one second that he is rude. He may have called you that, but I don't blame him. The weeks leading up to the match, I saw on the Brisbane Lions forum you all giving him crap and saying that he hates the cheersquad. It's more like you are rude to him. I honestly don't blame him for calling you that.

Wayne is a nice young chap. I have taught him everything he knows, he has listened to me and taken on board all I have had to say to him, and is a better footballer because of it.

I note that the AFL rumours page suggests that Geelong think they have got a potential champion with Kent Kingsley - no doubt he killed them in the reserves so have we made a big mistake? Carey may only have a couple of seasons left.

I reckon 2001 is going to be the most important season in Careys entire career.

2000 saw Carey starting to struggle a little. His fitness was down, nagging long term injuries kept flaring up, Because of some form problems with the team generally, Carey was used as a 'Firefighter', constantly moved around the ground to shore up weaknesses.

One week he would be down back holding up the defence, next week he would be at FF, trying to kick-start a stuttering foward line, next week he would be cruising CHF as usual.

All this contributed to a season which Carey would prefer to forget.

Now its over, the new season starts next week and Carey, at 28 (i think ?), is at the crossroads of his career. Injuries are starting to catch up, Wayne himself has said repeatedly that he dosn't think there is much footy left in him past the age of 31. The way he goes in so hard all tyhe time and the long term injuries he is carrying lends me to beleive him.

What do youse Roos people think ?

Two years left in him ? Three maybe ?

Or will he kick on into his mid-30's you think ?

Yeah 2001 is a pretty important year for the NM football club as a whole. We are starting one of these funny things called a "rebuilding phase". The first time in quite a while that North has decided/had the opportunity to go down this path - we'll just have to see how this all goes - bearing in mind that if we don't finish in the top four (again!!) at least then the season will be seen as a failure - and out will come the knives!!.

On the Duck issue, I'd personally like to see him plonked at full forward and stay there the rest of his career - if you want to double/triple team him there then fine, the free NM player(s) can hoof it over his head. Someone else's turn to cop it at CHF (McKernan?, Lange?, Colbert?, Archer? - who knows) - hopefully this will extend Duck's footy lifespan for another few years. I would expect him to pull the pin in 3 seasons regardless of injuries.

Yeah I read that rumour. It said that Bomber thought that Kingsley was the best forward at North but wasn't given the opportunities. A little bit of credibility lost there when there's a guy called Carey at the club, so I don't see how anyone could have rated Kent the "best forward there". Time will tell with Kingsley as he wasn't given many chances at North and probably deserved greater opportunities. I'd be surprised,having seen him play reserves a bit,if he's anything more than handy for the Cats.

Carey's 29 (May 27) and has stated that he'd like to give it away at the end of 2002 when his contract expires but I think North will try and convince him to stay another 2 years after that. He's certainly feeling the pinch now and played the last 6 weeks of the year on courage alone,probably shouldn't have played at all. I agree with Gonzo that another role has to be found for him,probably as a full forward who occasionally roams a bit,but it's certainly time for all North supporters to prepare themselves for the end of Carey as we know him,but not quite the end of his extraordinary influence and effectiveness.

Park him at FF and watch him kick on, also watch the team adjust to not having him at CHF all the time.

The re-building phase, I would like to know the last time Kangaroos had to rebuild. Anyone know? I think next year that the North Melbourne Football club will struggle to make the finals or just make it in. But in 2002, they will be the team of 99 or 96 again I think.

Yes he has been magnificent and injury took its toll this year. BUT we are having the longest between seasons break ever. If Pagan (and he is) clever, why not extend it even further and let Carey miss the Ansett cup?

His and Norths best options are still for him to play CHF. Mckernans to inconsistent, Colbert has the talent but who knows if the knee will stand up and return him to that level again, Archers not big enough (size wise only, heart wise he could). For a Hawk id love to see him somewhere else but CHF directing the flow of the Roos forwards throgh his play. At FF this wouldnt be as prominent as he would be further away from the main area of play.

Careys to good to be writing an epitaph for yet, though i will say the Brereton signs are there in that 10+ years of being 'THE MAN' may have (thats MAY HAVE mind you) taken its toll.
